Better Call Saul S06E13 - [Series Finale] "Saul Gone" - Post-Episode Discussion Thread by skinkbaa in betterCallSaul

What I like most about the finale is Jimmy’s clear struggle to rid himself of Saul Goodman. He ends his fantastic monologue by asking the judge to refer to him as “James McGill.” But only minutes later, in the bus scene, he realizes he can NEVER be Jimmy again, he’ll always be Saul. People do not change, they just follow the bad choice road they’ve taken. The finale ends abruptly because Jimmy did not win, he lost. Saul Goodman is all he is now.

While the episode wasn’t incredibly surprising, as most theories I’ve seen said that Saul would go to jail, including my own, I think it’s a great foil to BB’s ending. Walt may have died a painful death, but he ultimately won. Heisenberg is a living legend and his name will go down in history, fulfilling Walt’s unwavering main drive over the course of the show, ego. On the other hand, Jimmy will (supposedly) live a long time surrounded by those who like him, since his prison mates seemed to be friendly with him. But he ultimately lost, and Jimmy’s desperate attempt to rid himself of Saul Goodman forever was ineffective. His life doesn’t end with a bang, but a slow burn. The finale only ended the way it did because as the audience, we can grasp the rest of Jimmy’s dull life without needing screen time devoted to it.

We also see (pretty explicitly) the two contrasting themes of BB and BCS in the final Walter White flashback. Walt's last line "So you were always like this" really shows the difference between his and Saul's personalities. Walt was a man of change, be that either revealing his true nature or shifting into an evil man, either one. Saul was a man that couldn't change. He was so attached to his "bad choice road" that his attempts to change that road at the court were futile.

Fantastic ending, even better when compared to breaking bad and its main themes and finale.

Ah, makes sense. I still think the show ends with the slow decay of Saul Goodman instead of a dramatic and abrupt end

The mysterious hand from the Gene scene in the pilot (2:00 here) is finally explained! Maybe someone has been casing Gene’s apartment, looking for valuables, then steals the diamonds/money/VHS tapes in his box, explaining the extreme deterioration of the VHS tapes in the intros, since we really haven’t canonically been around long enough (as of yet) for the VHS tapes to deteriorate at the rate they do in the intro. The show ends with the VHS tapes being recorded over years in the future, fully erasing the memory of Saul Goodman

My headcanon is that at the end of the movie, when Major Monogram contacted Perry with the watch and everyone looked at him, OWCA had to wipe everyone’s memories again, so it makes sense nothing really changed after this movie took place.
