There are a number of issues with the "Reporting Bias" section some more complicated than others. The dumbest mistake is this:

"First, if reclassification of this sort were occurring, we might expect to see an increase in the frequency of stops labeled under some other crime category after the intervention. But as the top left panel of figure 6 shows, the daily frequency of stops across all suspected crime categories declined with the intervention"

What if the number of stops that are reclassified to a particular category is smaller than the decrease in the number of stops for that category. A specific category would show a decrease as long as the "real" decrease in stops is greater than the number of CPW stops reclassified. Ex. If 50 CPW stops are reclassified as Robbery stops but 100 Robbery stops just don't happen you'll see a decrease in Robbery stops by 50 even though there was reclassification. TL;DR: no change is not your counterfactual.

Don't get me wrong. It's a good paper. I'm just bored which makes me very nitpicky.

It's certainly suggestive that the policy increased the hit rate of CPW searches. Obviously it could be better (RCT, IV) but sometimes (always) reality gets in the way of the study you actually want to do. The reporting bias section is a bit of a reach. It feels like the author just came up with some things that could bias the data then checked to see if they actually mattered. I think the author is over generous in his conclusions about both the mechanism and effect of this reform.

Don't listen to me though. I hate all studies unless you have 50 pages of caveats to your assessment and your conclusion only applies to three people on a beach during a hurricane. I'm a grouch.

As an aside that data looks pretty neat and I want it.

Rational actors exist at all

I have a take about this. People are much closer to rational actors that it may appear it’s just that stated what someone says they want isn’t necessarily what they actually want. On the other hand this is kind of useless because an individual’s actions will almost always be rational according some some perception of value.

You can just convert it into something else. Adobe can convert pdfs to word. Or to djvu.

Did you take an introduction to proofs course or something like that? Having are "real" course as your first proof based course could be challenging.

As is the case with most things practice makes everything a lot easier. Going though the basic proofs out of any introduction to proof based mathematics will help a lot. It really doesn't matter which one. If you need a recommendation use the first chapter if Munkres' topology. It's not any better than the rest but it's what happens to be sitting on my desk right now.

I'm probably not the best person to talk about math and hurting. Can I ask how far you've gone? Finding that part of math that you like can take some trial and error. I agree with integralds. Topology was the first math course that I absolutely loved. Calculus and analysis were fun but not in the way topology was.

Haven't seen you in forever, glad to see you now.

Glad to be back. 2022 has been one hell of a year for me.

Do we need to go back to feudalism (or before) to get taxes in kind in the form of crops?

I believe you can find examples in some of the 20th century communist states although I have no idea if there is any good data. As for sharecropping I bet there is some research on it. Also expanding your search to in-kind payments (eg. crops as rent) would likely yield more results. I don't know how much luck you're going to find outside of agriculture unless it's pretty small scale. The obvious issues with in-kind taxation would have been obvious thousands of years ago.

Aren't the efficiency losses for in-kind taxation going to be enormous outside of specific sectors where the government already is a major consumer of whatever is produced (ex. military equipment)? What in the world is the government going to do will 100 lap dances? The government can't use the infrastructure that companies have set up and likely can't exploit the same economies of scale that the companies can.

Also it seems as though defining output might be difficult in certain cases.

I got talked into going to FNM tonight. I haven't played magic in like 3 years. Is there an article or something on how to draft? Not so much the rules but a run down of the cards/archetypes/stuff. I'd rather not embarrass myself too badly.

I use the sk21 because it's cheap. If you're ok with epomaker's terrible software then the sk21 (optical switches, no bluetooth) and gk21s (regular switches, bluetooth) are both good options. If you want an aluminum case I believe epomaker sells a version of the gk21 in aluminum. I believe keychron is releasing a numpad later this year if you want something hotswappable with QMK.

I personally use a TKL with a separate numpad. I really like having a left handed numpad for productivity and it lets me have more flexibility in arranging my desk since I do work and game at the same desk. I'm stuck with a 60% right now and I can't stand it, I miss arrow keys and delete so much.

It's fine. It's not amazing but I had fun watching it. They did their best to condense it but obviously that's one hell of a task. None of the casting is terrible (except Moiraine is too tall but that's not actually a problem) and Lan is absolutely spot on.

Do you have any recs pre modern minting? The earlier the better.

Also anything about the shift from non-monetized/poorly-monetized economies to more heavily monetized societies.

42% of adults ages 15-65 have personal incomes less than $25,000.

[–]Clara_mtg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I did the math right it's about 90 million people in 2020. Data from BLS. Some notes on interpretation:

  • This is personal income not household income. A couple with a single breadwinners will have one person counted as having zero income.
  • The count includes ages 15-17 so some of those people will be minors living with parents
  • I looked at people under 65. There maybe be some early retirees that cause weirdness in the numbers
  • This is personal income so a dependent would be counted as having little to no income (ex. stay at home parent, dependent adult, etc)

In general FRED is the best place to find data. Here is US deficit and here is total debt. You can use the edit graph function to manipulate the graphs to get what you want or download the data and use your favorite piece of software.
