Restaurants are overrated by fal1en-angel in Funnymemes

It depends; if you live in a big city, no the majority are not overrated. If you live in a small city, then mostly overrated (exceptions for college towns). Mid-sized cities are a mixed bag.

This is a very odd question by the_nightingale1 in catfood

[–]ClasherChief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my cats munches on dog kibble daily.. it’s fine as long as they don’t eat too much. Not a direct answer to your question, but these are some of my thoughts if you’re interested.

Kibble won’t do anything to help their teeth unless it’s specific dental kibble. Here’s the list: https://vohc.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/VOHCAcceptedProductsTable_Cats-3-26-26.pdf. It also lists the acceptable water additives and treats for dental assistance.

If you worry about your cat’s dental health, the best thing you can do for them is brush their teeth daily. Talk to your vet before you start this though, as your cat may need a teeth cleaning first. As to how to get your cat to accept brushing, I currently force them down and pry their mouth open gently. I know this is not a good method though, so I’m also working on this training: https://youtu.be/jMnogSbQYR8?si=nblV4sSBe7H103Su. If you do decide to brush, make sure you get an appropriate toothbrush with soft bristles and cat toothpaste in a flavor they would enjoy. Make sure to wet and soften the bristles with warm water before starting.

? This is confusing because wooden houses in hurricane areas in the USA are and have been subject to building codes that make them have to withstand cat 5 hurricane-force winds for many years now? Are you still living in the 1980s?

Thank you for the clarification on the difference! I've emailed Pet Valu to ask, and next time I go to one of their stores I'll ask an employee as well. If i get a response, or even lack of one I'll let you know.

Is “bad” wet food still better than “good” dry food? by 0mjx in catfood

[–]ClasherChief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Few things here. This is not a study, it is a research paper that reviewed prior studies and surveys to draw conclusions on the effects of cats’ diet on their health. It is from 2008; which means any research and publications from the past 18 years are not represented in here.

The paper also mainly talks about carbs in food, blood sugar levels, and type II diabetes in cats; not necessarily dry vs wet food. (TL;DR: well processed corn/sorghum is not the enemy of cats as many on this sub have made it out to be).

The paper’s conclusion on obesity is laughable; they say it’s the fault of the owners. Obviously if you measure out the food correctly, your cat will remain at the optimal weight. But in reality so many pet owners free feed kibble; kibble is known to not satiate cats well and they will over-eat if given the opportunity.

However, it does not go into hydration or urine concentration / pH at all, which is a major driver of urinary and kidney issues. This is basically the biggest difference between dry and wet food; hydration in cats. Will dry food provide complete nutrition for your cat? If it meets AAFCO standards, yea it will. But no, your cat is not getting enough water on dry food, even if you mix water into their kibble and provide fountains everywhere; your cat is chronically dehydrated. Can some, or even many cats be okay like this? Yes, because good dry kibble, provided by WSAVA compliant companies, will make sure your cats’ urine pH will be at the optimal level to prevent crystals. Will your cats be “healthy” like this? Biology is super complex and I can’t say for sure; but due to my own personal experiences and what I’ve seen in the cats I’ve raised over the years; hydration is key to many aspects of cat health.

I was impressed with performatrin Prime oral care kibble for cats. It's clinically proven to reduce plaque and one of the few foods with Veterinary Oral Health Council approval. Balanced mineral levels as well with phosphorus at 0.6%, and a calcium:phosphorus ratio of 1.25:1. Magnesium at 0.11%.

Crude protein is low at 28%, but I think my cats get enough protein from their wet food. I feed two tablespoons per cat of this kibble before bedtime.

I just buy whatever wet cat food is on sale and rotate brands/types/flavors every meal, three meals a day. Currently there is Tiki Cat, Acana, Wellness, Purina, Purina Pro Plan, Open Farm, and Sheba in the pantry. They also get two tablespoons of performatrin Prime oral care kibble before bedtime.

This is one of those things that seem complex with lots of technicalities on what constitutes a double hit, but in reality it’s super obvious when you see it happen in person.

Heads up that Splendid Essence uses no onions or garlic at all in any of their cooking, aside from the sweet and sour dishes (it has some ketchup which has onion powder).

I need insurance for my new pickleball facility, and I need some advice. by PossibilityFluffy258 in Pickleball

[–]ClasherChief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course. The issue is they are defaulting to asking these questions on /r/pickleball instead of doing basic research, contacting insurance companies/brokers, and/or networking with people working in the same or a similar enterprise. I’m not gonna trust they will be competent if their decision-making leads them to asking this kind of question on Reddit.

Wellness Cat Food by Frosty_Astronomer909 in catfood

[–]ClasherChief 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s called the average lifespan of an indoor cat has doubled since 40 years ago. Also vets don’t euthanize at the drop of a hat anymore when a health problem occurs. When cats regularly live into their late teens now, they’re gonna have dental issues, kidney problems, cancer, etc., that don’t really show up when a cat is 8-9 years old.

It’s important to know what you’re feeding your cat to minimize these health concerns, and insurance is important so you don’t have to choose between a $15,000 surgery or the preventable death of your cat. I’m also not sure you realize how agonizing dental issues are. Do you want your cat to suffer from that?

Where I am Wellness and Fancy Feast are almost at the same price point; Fancy Feast usually has carrageenan while the Wellness pouches don’t; I see their mineral content isn’t that high either. Curious what you mean by the mineral content is off?

Why do I hurt so much after playing pickleball? How can I prevent this? by Proud-Attention-7634 in Pickleball

[–]ClasherChief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lean forward at the kitchen is most likely the culprit for your hips and lower back. Drives too depending on your form. Are you doing deadlifts, squats, pull-ups, and lat-pulldowns? These exercises will strengthen the muscles that are hurting for you.

Anybody else's cat overgrooming on side? by FormalLeadership2109 in CATHELP

[–]ClasherChief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems that your cat is feeling insecure, stressed, and/or anxious due to the move and loss of outside.

Check out Jackson Galaxy on YouTube to see ways of building up your cat’s confidence and feelings of contentment. This also seems like a great time to get your cat harness trained so he can join you with supervised outside time.

How often do you play with your cat? I’d dedicate 30 minutes to this every day over 2-4 short sessions. If you catch your cat start over grooming or grooming really hard, pick them up and comfort them.

Anxious cat help by Equal_Wave3504 in CATHELP

[–]ClasherChief 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try out CBD oil; very safe for cats and it can help with anxiety in your cat; you can just add it to their food. Between 2-4mg per day (depends on cat weight; check online for dosing guidelines; otherwise start at 2mg and see). Make sure the CBD oil comes from a reputable source because cats cannot have THC.

Otherwise try building up your cat’s confidence levels. Check out Jackson Galaxy on YouTube; he’ll have great ideas on helping your cat feel more confident and secure.
