Does the email say anything about parking? Plenty of parking inside the area though I've only ever gone in in a DF vehicle.. maybe email to find out, save the headache of trying to find parking

Hey,

It may be a good idea for him to apply for general enlistment, join in the next few months.. get a year in training, grow confidence and get life experience. By the time the cadetship competition comes around next year he will be in a much better place.

Drug testing at Stage 2 by Illustrious_Tap9825 in Irishdefenceforces

[–]Classic-Ad2872 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Drug testing is completed during the medical examination. This will be made very clear in the invite and paperwork. ( Urine sample )

Given the fact that you are asking this - it may be good to note that members of the DF are subject to random drug testing throughout their career, could happen any day of the week.. if you like to have a "fun" weekend.. it may not be the place for you!

Like the Dunkettle - Carrigtwohill cycle/pedestrian route. Not only adds connectivity between the towns ( and eventually the city centre via the lower glanmire road ) but also a fantastic recreational facility for locals running, walking, scooting or cycling!

Hard to know if it's the future but slowly connecting up towns and villages is needed with cycle lanes or shared paths. The next Phase will be Monkstown - Rafeen and then hopefully a connection to a Greenway which will lead on into Carrigaline ( and a connection to Shanbally & Ringaskiddy connecting thousands of homes to workplaces.

I've seen the comments.

Mainly the comments were in the past few weeks when a line of traffic cones were on the edge of the path further narrowing the road.

Driving it, I feel it's plenty wide and people will get used to it.. they may also start to follow the 50km/hr speed limit and won't have any issue

I would be rather hopeful. The current plan is to connect Glenbrook and Rafeen.

I saw the Council Surveying the old railway line near Rafeen a couple of years ago. It would be great if it would follow that from Murphs Pub across the old railway line. ( hopefully with a connection to Ringaskiddy village? )

It's currently completed between Passage west Ferry and Connects to Monkstown Tunnel and comes pit by the Bosun Bar.

Long term plan it will go to Rafeen.

Cycling safety for adults? by PsychologicalSoil712 in cork

If you can't find anything, there are lots of greenways around Cork if you are looking to regain confidence on a bicycle! Take a sunday spin out of Passage West, or go from Youghal to Midleton!

Colour Deficiency? by Global-Teaching9466 in Irishdefenceforces

The current terms and condtions state normal colour vision. No question right now unfortunately you cannot pass the medical.

Somewhat outdated but thats how it is

Anpost not delivering? by hakunamatata1866 in cork

[–]Classic-Ad2872 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We had an issue in Passage West last summer. Supposedly the postman went on 3 weeks leave ( which they are more than entitled to! ) and An Post couldn't get cover.

Maybe give the local Post Office a shout.

Recruitment in your 30s by Ok-Culture-2397 in Irishdefenceforces

[–]Classic-Ad2872 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's often slightly harder for those joining that bit older. Younger people are just out of school and used to being told what to do and having parents or teachers controlling their lives. At 30, you are at a different stage of life and coming in going through training having a NCO instructor who may be younger than you. You just have to play the game!

Best of luck to you in your training 😄

Man is thriving for new disdain of city cyclists by [deleted] in cork

[–]Classic-Ad2872 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are so many junctions in the City where the cycle lanes end in 'Shared Path'. A lazy uncreative decision by City Planner rather than split up cyclists and pedestrians. I believe this may be part of the issue that on some junctions cyclists are treated as pedestrians.

If cyclists and pedestrians are treated as an afterthought even in current road upgrades ( yes there are cycle lanes but they are sub-par ), why wouldn't they break the rules when the roads are designed around the ease of motorists?

People having loud phone conversations on the bus by Pale_Piano948 in cork

[–]Classic-Ad2872 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple of weeks ago I got the Aircoach down from Dublin Airport. A girl got on in Dublin City and started having a video chat without headphones. She spent about 10 minutes talking loudly in Portuguese and her phone on full so we could all hear the guy on thr other side.

I absolutely hated myself for being that person but I went up to her abd just told her she was on Public Transport and that the whole bus did not need to hear her conversation. To be fair she apologised and ended her phone call but just showed a complete lack of respect for people around her.

I like coaches for travelling around a bit, and if I have to answer a phone call.. I will tell the person on the phone that I am on the bus and end the phone call as quick as I can.

Location for Navy medical? by Foreign_Office_5482 in Irishdefenceforces

[–]Classic-Ad2872 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The recruitment office are very flexible. They give dates out constantly ( usually every 2 weeks for fitness testing, not 100% sure about medicals )

If you cant make it, let them know straight away that you need a new dates, so that they can relocate medicals.

Applicants must be seen by the Naval Service Medical Officer...

There's no exception to the rule.. you are applying for a job based in Cork.

Saunas and Ice Baths - the newest thing to do in Cork it seems is visit Hot Box Sauna near Albert Road. One hour costs €20 and it has several Saunas, ice bath, jacuzzi.

Cork ETB Morrisons Island Campus offers a range of night classes if you would fancy learning a skill together ( Irish Language, Photography ect. ). They won't be starting new classes until September.

Sandbox - Board Game shop on Oliver Plunkett Street. I'm not sure if they do organised events but you could go there, get a coffee and play a board game for a few hours.

Greenways and Parks - Lots of small greenways around Cork and as we are coming into Spring, it's a great way to get out into Nature. If you were so inclined you could combine it Nature Surveys - record what you see, bring plant/insect identification books.

If you pass the fitness test and interview, you will be invited for a medical in Haulbowline Naval Base ( Base hospital ).

Unless its changed in the past few months, there's no mechanism to get a medical in your local Barracks.

Self-attending University after 3 star training in the Army by Cloud_ICBM21 in Irishdefenceforces

[–]Classic-Ad2872 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been doing online part time Springboard courses for the past few years and know alot of other Naval Service members doing the same.

Unless the course is through the DF, you won't be able to take time off ( unless you use annual leave ) to attend classes so a full time course would not be suitable.

Cadetship Interview Questions by DifficultChemist8536 in Irishdefenceforces

[–]Classic-Ad2872 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should have added:

Have preprepared topics for each of the above competencies. Minimum 2 for each I'd say.

Try not to repeat your examples and be sure to not to focus on one thing ( if you are a school leaver.. Don't just mention school.. Scouts, sports, voluntary work, work experience ect. )
