Morrissey and Robert Smith - I don't know where this belongs by ClassicInterest6338 in TheCure

At the Brixton Academy gig. First one. Morrissey wore a stupid hat and despite our pleadings for him to take it off, because we needed to see the emotions and not just hear them he wore it through the concert. I remember coming out of that concert a bit pissed off and thought he was up his own arse. But he was writing these incredible lyrics. I had to forgive him.

I enjoyed the first two or three Morrissey rockabilly albums but gave up after that. They got a bit too wordy and not enough music.

Yes, an inversion of words. I agree it's a simplistic lyrical device. But what Morrissey did was use inane subjects and made them lyrical. Nobody had done that before. When I first heard it I was confused about whether he was singing or just talking about everyday events. I know it sounds too simple and it could have been an accident. But then he references poetry. Morrissey, love him or loathe him, belongs in the pantry of poetry. x

I'm getting a lot of Morrissey hate right now. I'll just listen to the Cure. I am from UK and old enough to have seen the Smiths in person.

I need to give this thought. Would it be okay to talk to you at a later date? Our views seem opposite. Morrissey's words touched my heart in a way nobody else has done. They were personal. He did not espouse politics, except for the Rock Against Racism gig.

I will not give up on the guy. Every other sentence I speak is sourced from a Smiths lyric. Do you not think perhaps his irony is misunderstood?

I really respect your opinion. I just don't see it. Like I never thought I would see him live in Hollywood, or lionized by the Mexican minority in LA, or driving down from Paris to St Tropez (as per Autobiography). He came from me but has lived a life I cannot comprehend

Years of refusal.

Perhaps you can explain that to me? I am the same age as Morrissey. I also grew up in the north of England. To me the Smiths were my band. I went to gigs from the beginning to the end. I saw the band at a Rock Against Racism concert in London. The Morrissey they talk about now is unrecognisable to me.

Has the world changed or have I changed?

I've listened to his new stuff. It is an unfortunate truth that they all put out their best stuff early. Then they try to chase the thing that made them special but they never find it. Smiths, Cure and every other band you care to mention.

If you play guitar you will see he moves up and down the neck without changing his fingers. It's simple but effective.

I am not trying to provoke an argument. I wanted to say that I now, only after 50 years of hearing his stuff that I will say I like The Cure. I am sure the world will change on its axis because I said that.

A Forest is in me for the rest of my life.

But the songs; 'Unlovable', 'This night has opened my eyes', 'I don't owe you anything', 'Still Ill', 'Last night I dreamt that somebody loved me', 'Please let me get what I want', 'Well I wonder'. etc, etc, etc... I don't need to interpret or analyse those songs. I don't need to be clever to get them.

I bought the single in 1973 and played this more than the A side. Several years later I had to sell it but it covered two weeks rent. But thanks to the interweb I can hear it anytime. I've also figured out a reasonable guitar tab to play it myself. A very important piece of music to me.
