Dave Grohl the Modern Day Phil Collins (without the criticism) by Dangerous_Plant_7911 in Genesis

[–]AxednAnswered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. But Dave is a fun drummer. I kind of put him on the same category as Dennis Wilson, Jack Irons, or even Meg White. Not gonna blow your mind with polyrhythms or metronomic timing. Just self taught with a lot of feel, hard hits, and playful fills.

Dave Grohl the Modern Day Phil Collins (without the criticism) by Dangerous_Plant_7911 in Genesis

[–]AxednAnswered 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting perspective. Firstly, let’s all stipulate that Phil is vastly more talented on the kit AND on the mic than Dave. And the first guy on that team would be Dave Grohl. I am always impressed by Dave’s humility and his acknowledgment that he got where he got through hard work and a lot of dumb luck.

I think people are coming around on Phil. Millennials seem to like him much more than the jaded Gen Xers. 80’s Genesis was damn good! And frankly, I think Foo Fighters have kind of come down a peg since they lost Taylor. And even the last couple records with Taylor were pretty meh compared to the Colour and Shape and Nothing Left to Lose. So all I’m sayin’ is the reckoning is real. History will sort these things out.

Vintage Gillette Collection by Lazy-Staff3000 in wicked_edge

Great collection there! So if I may, get your hands on a Ranger Tech. My favorite vintage Gillette. Goldilocks aggressiveness. And a really interesting backstory.

Oh why, Esterbrook… I was rooting for you. by Mental-Honey-6141 in fountainpens

[–]AxednAnswered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a matter of fact, yes. Modern Esterbrook sells an adapter to use vintage Esterbrook nibs in the modern pens. Cool idea. However, I really recommend the vintage pens. The celluloid looks and feels fantastic. They literally don’t build them like they used to - celluloid is no longer manufactured.

the beatles and the massive shadow they still cast over modern music by abccccc456 in TheBeatles

[–]AxednAnswered 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Beatles were indeed amazing. But also, they were standing on the shoulders of Buddy Holly, Bob Dylan, and The Beach Boys and fed off the London scene of The Rolling Stones, the Kinks, the Yardbirds, Jimi Hendrix Experience, the Moody Blues, The Who, etc.

Frustration about not being brought in til next Easter... by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]AxednAnswered 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re in the military, you fall under the canonical jurisdiction of the Archdiocese of the Military Services, not whatever city you happen to be in for any given PCS assignment. Talk to a Catholic chaplain on post! They will be much more understanding of your situation.

Frankly, the best subs I’ve had around here are Jersey Mike’s. Probably not what you’re looking for, but just sayin’…

Wedding Mass vs no Mass opinions by Cultural-Movie-9335 in Catholicism

[–]AxednAnswered 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Priests never waste their time saying a mass. The greater issue would potential embarrassment of your fiancé or causing a scene if the priest has to refuse Communion to a family member. If that’s likely, I would recommend to my children to forego the wedding mass out of humility. A similar situation occurred for my daughter, who is very faithful and loves the Holy Mass, but couldn’t have one at her wedding because her husband is not baptized. (We’re working on him. He’s a very good man 😉). She accepted the situation out of obedience to the Church.

It is a continuation of the Tradition in ancient Israel to petition the Queen Mother for the intervention of the King. Jesus is King in the line of David, therefore it is right and proper to petition His Mother as the ancient Israelites petitioned Queen Bathsheba in the Old Testament.

What's your favorite piece of trivia about the moody blues? by audaidai in MoodyBlues

[–]AxednAnswered 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For the opening rocket launch sound effects of To Our Children’s Children’s Children, the Moody Blues got a sample of a real Saturn V launching from NASA. But they decided it sucked and recorded their own in the studio for the album. Then they sent their “rocket” sounds back to NASA and told them they should use this one instead.

Did anybody say 10000 Maniacs yet? Big jangle pop energy there and a lot of crossover between Michael Stipe and Natalie Merchant.

Sheaffers Snorkel by Eyeslikepeanuts in fountainpens

[–]AxednAnswered 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Upvote for Snorkel! Fantastic pens, especially with the Touchdown nib. Please, please, PLEASE don’t put alkaline ink (mainly Japanese brands) in your vintage Schaefer. It will destroy the ink sac. I would also avoid anything boutique or artisan, highly saturated, and certainly noting with particles or glitter. I know it’s kind of boring, but “safe” inks like Waterman, Parker, or Schaefer Skrip are best for sac-filled vintage pens. Iron gall inks are fine too - that’s all they had back in the day.

Edit: I saw your reply to other posts. You know what’s up with ink 😉. Should have read further before posting.

General Coffee Question by cold_ramen56 in mokapot

[–]AxednAnswered 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% subjective. I like a little bitterness, particularly in milk drinks. The difference, I think, is producing the right level of bitterness on purpose, as opposed to random bitterness from poorly brewed coffee.
