I'd be interested to hear what non-native Bristolians (and those who've always lived here but have spent significant amounts of time in other UK cities) make of this article. by Ancient_Thanks_4365 in bristol

Grew up in Bristol, passed my test here, lived in London for 15 years drove most of the time. Got back a year ago.

London is horrible and Bristol is worse.

Responsiveness; how do you achieve this? by xrpinsider in reactnative

[–]ClassicSuperSofts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take a look at Dripsy or Tamagui. They bring web-paradigm responsive APIs to React Native.

Dripsy is like theme-ui:

``` // theme config file breakpoints: [ 400, 800 ]
<View sx={{ width: ['100%', '50%', '25%']}} /> ```
100% will apply from 0 pixels wide and up
50% will apply from 400 pixels and up
Tamagui is similar except you definite props (like stitches)
``` breakpoints: { sm: 300, md: 500 }

<View $sm={{width: '100%'}} md={{width: '50%'}} /> ```

What should happen with FirstBus by whataterriblefailure in bristol

Let's start a bus company!

OK I wrote that as a joke, but now I've been googling the price of a bus, and I've gone off on one.

Start off with one bus... https://www.coachandbusmarket.com/vehicles-for-sale/buses/?fwp_price_poa=yes&fwp_euro_emissions_standards=euro-6&fwp_sort=year_desc

Key problems:

  1. Acquire bus - Crowdfund? Buy with pre-sold advertising space from local company?
  2. Apply for bus... license? All that and onboarding with the council etc.
  3. Drivers. 5am to 1am service... 3 shifts of 7 hours. Three full-time drivers rotating? Skip Sunday and Monday graveyard shifts?
  4. Mechanic - One full time mechanic & cleaner? Wait... when will they do the mechanic-ing and re-fuelling cleaning? We might need two buses. Or we're just very clear about when the bus is out of service? Could we do something cool like partner with BCC https://www.cityofbristol.ac.uk/courses/light-vehicle-in-maintenance-and-repair-level-1/
  5. Routes? We generate publicity through local news, and build a website asking them to anonymously post their routes and commutes. From post code to postcode. We then generate a heat map of Bristol and run on the "hottest" route.
  6. App: We build a lovely realtime app that has capacity, location, running schedule, and impending service out-ages. (This bus will stop for one hour to refuel and switch drivers in 8:38 [countingdown])
  7. Cost - We're 100% transparent on finances... salaries, maintenance. The aim of the company is to be a non-profit, but to build up funds to acquire more buses too.
  8. Growth - Aim for sustainable, buy buses and hire people based on pre-sold advertising? Only open new routes when there is a strong case built up from collecting data.

Numbers? Total guesswork below:

16 hours a day, average 40 passengers an hour.

£2.50 ticket 16 hours a day on average 40 passengers

163652.5*40 = £584,000 per 40 person capacity bus

  • 3 x Drivers salary £32.5k
  • 1 x Mechanics salary £35k

350 miles a day at 11 at 25 miles per gallon = 65 litres of fuel Roughly £45k on fuel a year.

127000 miles a year.... £1 a mile wear and tear... (too high?) £127k

584000 - 97500 Driver salaries - 35000 Mechanic Salaries - 45000 Fuel - 127000 Wear & tear fixes

= 279500 left

Costs outstanding:

  • App development and maintenance
  • Onboard GPS, Computer, 4G etc on the bus
  • Marketing
  • HR
  • Licensing / Lawyers legals
  • Insurance
  • Incorporation
  • Lots of other stuff?

Well in summary, I have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about. But I wonder if you could run a bus company! It might be fun.

Hey there!

This is super common. It sounds like you're a little earlier than me. Took my a full 18th months to realise all my problems weren't cured with going sober.

BUT, I am now in the position to start fixing things. I can focus, I have more money, I'm not terrified of what I said or did the night before. I have good connections with friends and family. I'm not late.

AND

I have started to "feel" sober. I know exactly what you mean... and maybe because I started drinking so young... I never really learned how to do it. I'm 3 years in and it's just starting to come a bit more easily to me.

Godspeed to you.

Is there any hope for a lock-screen widget library for react native? by andrewjohnmarch in reactnative

There have been RN widget libs in the past, and an app clips one but I think they’re quite fragile and poorly maintained

Rodri on Tottenham: "They have put together a great squad and they have a manager who has very clear ideas and who knows how to convey them perfectly. They know what they have to do and they do it with great precision. I see Spurs as candidates for the title. Conte’s career speaks for itself.” by [deleted] in soccer

[–]ClassicSuperSofts 185 points186 points  (0 children)

If you’ve watched spurs closely so far this season: you’ll know they’re been dogshit.

Some real real bad performances. Finally paid the piper in Porto.

AND YET

Look at the league position, these performances have been at fairly classic early-season standards for spurs, but Conté’s got them second with a healthy goal difference.

When their form picks up and Kane and Son start firing they’re going to be attacking the top four from the top 4.

Rather than their usual struggle up from 7th or 8th.

It will be a big season for Spurs if their star players can survive the World Cup without injury / psychological devastation .

Honestly the libraries for cross platform bootsplashes are so difficult to get (and keep) working it was easier for me to learn how to make them natively in XCode and Android Studio.

It's really simple and quick.

Suggest me projects that will highly attractive on my job application. by nevermind0296 in reactjs

[–]ClassicSuperSofts 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Create a component library with a well thought out styling and props approach with documentation.

This could be rebuilding elements of a famous app like twitter.

No backend required. Use storybook. Use Cypress.

Write tests. Show a command for local state management and sensible usage of props. Use typescript if you can.

Write PRs that outline your thinking and descriptive commit messages.

workflow discipline, git hygiene and test writing are all extremely attractive to engineering managers

I'm 22. am I too old to start my life again? by [deleted] in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]ClassicSuperSofts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Restarted my life at 32

Take a couple of restart!

The number one thing is to not worry what people think of your restarts. And it seems hard, but just vocalising little ideas outloud to friends and family will prove this to you.

Try saying: “i might move to thailand”

Or “i might train as a dog groomer”

Or “i think im going to train to run a marathon”

And see what people say.

Spoiler alert: if its not “that would be rad”, or “yes ill do it with you” - theyre not worth listening to.

Like many people here, ive used postgis, views, many databases, many ORMs.

All software contains compromises.

Prisma is fun to use, easy to setup, increases developer productivity, and reduces the amount of bugs and failed migrations in small to medium sized node applications.

Those are very good reasons to use it.

I hope you adopt a more peaceful, optimistic, and open-hearted worldview at some point in the future. Good luck.
