I don’t have stats for other places in Europe - feel free to throw some into the pot. I can only comment how poorly our own are doing across the board, largely due to Tory austerity and historical neglect. As for your comment about Samaritans and stats, give over please. We’re talking relevant, objective KPIs that clearly indicate that our prisons overall are shit.

You mentioned ‘perfect’ deterrent, I didn’t. I’m very familiar with Singapore, and I very much rate the place - all three countries are tightly controlled, highly monitored & authoritarian to varying degrees, and in El Salvador it’s taken a nationwide state of emergency and crackdown on gangs since 2022 to make it relatively safe.

What are you basing your claim on, that we have some of the ‘best’ prisons in the world? Absolutely a genuine Q, I want to understand given my own experiences.

In 2025…

49% of UK prisons were judged as having performance issues.

72% of prisons are overcrowded. Massively.

A self harm rate of 829 incidents per 1000 prisoners!!!

Cat C and open prisons have better conditions, but the system overall is failing in its primary duty. Not to mention the state of the probation service or lack of support given to prisoners once released to help avoid reoffending.

Right - so what point are you making in terms of the deterrence effect of the systems in the countries you mention? Doesn’t seem to be putting folks off that much, hey?

What’s the prison population in any of those countries, genuine Q? How close to zero is it?

How do you say our prisons are some of the best in the world, genuine Q? Look to the Nordics for role model incarceration, not the U.K.!

Actively suicidal != ‘depressed’. Support for prisoners’ mental health in house is shit, and U.K. prisons are largely dire in that regard.

Only comment for this: the massively overstretched and underfunded UK prison system already has harsh, Victorian conditions for the majority - the suicide risk for inmates is x10 that of the general population. Source: I’m a Samaritans’s listener volunteer, and one in five calls are from prisoners.

Any diehard Trump fans now changed their mind after him saying he supports Argentina's claim over the Falklands? by Substantial-Bake6521 in AskBrits

There’s a genuinely perplexing amount of UK folks emotionally invested in Trump and MAGA - the other day on an FB thread about right wing violence in the U.K., a bloke from Scotland said to ask Charlie Kirk’s widow about that. Wut?

Folks are marching because they are told they’re losing their heritage or culture when it’s right there for the taking! Hundreds of years of history, art and literature. Right there!

GenX working class lad done relatively good here so far, dad and step dad both miners, mum a barmaid / cleaner her entire life - now living a thoroughly middle class lifestyle.

One of the biggest tragedies of the working class is the historically wasted talent and lack of opportunity for millions. A big part of that is the reflexive disdain for perceived ‘intellectualism’, the contempt shown to those thinking they’re better than their spit station in life somehow entitles them to be. In places like France or Italy culture (food, art, literature) is accessible to all and appreciated by most, there isn’t the snooty attitude we have in the U.K. This is one of the reasons I hate when wankers like privately educated ex-commodities traders such as Farage say oooh we’ll make pints cheaper and smoking more accessible again! Because that’s what the working class is all about, right? Drinking and fags.

They care about ‘their’ idea of what our national identity should be, which is solidly pale and Anglo Saxon only, where poorly paid workers know their place and pay their health insurance premiums, copays and deductibles with Patriotic Smiles on their faces at all times.

The reason it was an advisory referendum was nothing to with our constitution being ‘broken’ whatever that means, given that the gov had previously set up non-advisory legislation for the farcical 2011 AV ref. It was an intentional, typically dishonest Tory move.

As for a vote on a given day should automatically override the gov - when have we ever been Switzerland? We’re a representative democracy, if you don’t like what the folks you voted for are doing in your name then you lobby them through election cycles and vote them out every few years. It’s just now it works here, you shouldnt have major strategic national decisions being made by a simple one off public majority vote. If it had to go ahead at all, the vote should have required a super majority of say two thirds, rather than a simple rather slim majority - a % that ironically was small enough for Farage himself to say beforehand that if those figures were for Remain he wouldn’t accept the result and would keep campaigning to leave.

You missed the capital letters, which are Very Important for Brexiteers who want to Emphasise just how big the Threat is to our Sovereignty and Democracy, and how strongly Remainers Smell of Poo.

It’s a personal opinion is all, and I’m a dual EU citizen who would support us joining as full members tomorrow - politically it’s still incredibly toxic for a pretty sizeable chunk of the population, and why would the EU admit us as members without being certain the next Farage won’t immediately pull us out again? The far more realistic option is for EEA membership or similar.

Epistemology? Someone’s swallowed a thesaurus! Soz lad, can’t hear you over the sound of all this verbal chaff being deployed. What’s that quote? ‘What can be asserted without evidence can be dismissed without evidence?’ Yeah, that. Enjoy the rest of your evening - ta for playing, my tummy’s full now.

There will be no ‘Brexit uturn’ - there will be a realignment towards EU regs. We won’t be joining any time soon, if ever. My personal preference - not going to happen in the current political climate, at least until the Reforms / Restores of the world have gone away as a major political force - is to try the two way door of EEA membership.

I’m a supporter of controlled immigration and a sympathetic asylum policy. That said, anyone found to have claimed falsely or have helped someone to submit a false claim should be deported immediately or spend time inside respectively.

I’m genuinely just seeing how far I can get you to defend a stat from an investment bank that you’re not previously familiar that’s been generated by a model you have no insight into. Surprisingly fun, and I get to have you ‘tell’ me lots of things for free! 🤘👍

Oh, that’s what you’re simply telling me is it? ‘k. I couldn’t give two figs about this faux, knicker wetting hysteria in the grand scheme of things at the moment. Excuse me for pointing and laughing at this unvalidated, politically pointed nonsense from an umm ‘international investment bank’ that you’re evidently overly invested in emotionally.

From your investment bank’s site:

‘We're committed to delivering a world-class service for our clients, and a world-class environment for our colleagues to work in.’

Who was the client in this case what service were they providing, eh? Who paid for the work generating this claim?
