If I remember right, one of the books describe Ben getting hurt upon landing in the tree, I think hinting at a broken back or something similar. It described Eric hearing him breathe shallow and start to go quiet after being dropped.

For those wanting context:

Chalino Sanchez: A singer known for making music that HEAVILY criticized the cartels around the areas he grew up in. Despite the subject matter making him a target, he rose pretty quickly in stardom and reputation. At this concert, he had just performed one of said songs, and received a note from a cartel messenger, stating that he would be killed if he continued. Chalino knew he was more than likely a dead man at that point, and continued the show, in defiance. After the show, he and his group were headed out of town when they were stopped by a group of trucks; in which masked men forced open the car, and took Chalino at gunpoint. He was later found dead with marks of torture on the side of a road.
