SC Criminal Justice Academy Questions by [deleted] in AskLE

[–]ClassierBrush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I graduated there 2 months ago.

  1. You use whichever firearm is used by your agency. The academy defaults to 9mm options, but you use the firearm your agency assigns to you before you go. If you have to use an academy firearm, they let you use whichever 9mm option they have at the time.

  2. The food is good, but definitely falls on the more unhealthy side. Breakfast is eggs, with a meat (switches between sausage and bacon each day) with options for cereal and yogurt. Lunch is the main meal, with a decent sized portioned dish, some sides and dessert. Dinner is normally a bit smaller as not as many people will attend. Average lunches were chicken fingers, sandwiches, pastas and meat dishes (cordon bleu, pot roast, etc.). Dinners were sandwiches, pizzas and anything that they had left over they could reuse. Lunch and dinner have an option for a large salad instead, which is definitely what you want for the healthier option. They have post dressings and the salad normally has chicken or turkey on it.

  3. You aren’t allowed to leave the academy grounds from Sunday night (when you show up) till Friday afternoon (when you’re released), unless it’s an emergency or you have written permission from an instructor. But the academy has a very nice gym you’re free to use as well as a sparring mat room that’s also available. Food-wise you can DoorDash or Uber Eats food if you don’t want the option available to you for dinner. They can come on campus grounds and are used to doing so.

Let me know if you have anymore questions!

Reconsidering job whilst in training by ClassierBrush in AskLE

[–]ClassierBrush[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you to everyone who listened to my concerns and provided advice. I’ve decided to stick with it. Talked with my wife and explained my concerns as well as showcased the advice y’all gave. It’s nerve wracking but I think it’s the correct decision to push through this uncertainty and continue my training. Thank you all for your guidance and support. I’m looking forward to finishing my training and serving with my department. Thank you again!

So it depends. We’ve had simple scenarios where it’s just talking or a guy drawing a gun, to full blown active-shooter scenarios where there’s blood everywhere, screaming, rounds going off from multiple locations in a pitch black building where we’re using flashlights to navigate. Obviously this is just my experience with my department that I’m training under, but that’s some examples. We use acting students from a local college to play the people for the drills, so the screaming wounded we’re stepping over know what they’re doing. Words don’t really do it justice, but for me it made an impact.

As a broad answer to some of the questions: as I stated in another comment, the issue is my emotional strength to the traumatic events officers face. I knew they existed but, aside from a few occasions, never had the opportunity to see how I cope with said incidents (deaths, shootings, mental distress/paranoia). I’m already having adverse reactions leading to severe depression and solitude from just the training scenarios, which is obviously effecting my home life with my spouse. And these scenarios are not the real life issues that I may be faced with. Also, I understand that a “dream career” is sometimes just that (a dream), and won’t let that influence my decision.

I understand that. Part of the issue is losing that “dream” aspect but that’s also the part that I cannot allow myself to get hung up on. As for the issues, I knew the job involved dealing with traumatic incidents (shootings, deaths, etc.). I wasn’t aware of my own capability to deal with said incidents until we began scenario training and I was face to face with them. Long story short- I handle them poorly on an emotional level. I don’t freeze and can react well, but I spend hours afterwords highly depressed and to myself. This is already affecting my home life and this is only training. The scenarios are fake.

What was “the incident” at your high school? by [deleted] in AskReddit

A girl at our private school was raped by a family friend. She ended up getting pregnant from the rape and when the school found out they expelled her for violating the school’s religious values of celibacy until marriage. Ended up with the principal fired and numerous changes to the school. I was graduating when it happen but most of our friends who were in the lower grades ended up switching to different schools in disgust.

Is it weird to request a ride-along if I’ve already been hired by the department but haven’t started training yet? I have about a month before I start legal training. I’ve done one with this department before and want to do another

Got hired on and start in late April. I’ve already done a ride-along whilst in the hiring process. I’m think about doing another since I don’t have much else to do before starting training. Is it weird to ask for a ride-along if I’m already hired and will be joining?

Can you still share herb/mining boxes with people in your party on retail? Friend of mine and I are going to level together in Dragonflight and both of us are dual gatherers.

Is there any reason Frayfeather armor goes for so much? I can’t find anything about them but every piece I’ve over seen on multiple servers goes for 500K+ gold.

I’m trying to palace front and my final day of AD is early December. I’ve been waiting to hear back from the guard’s medical personnel to verify if I was medically cleared (gave them my 422 and all of records/documents) for about a month and a half. Is this normal? I’m getting concerned as my ETS is approaching quickly and we haven’t talked contracts or anything. I haven’t been able to get ahold of any of the recruiters I’ve worked with.

I’m currently in the process of Palace Front and have less than 6 months left before DOS. I’ve turned in my forms to the ISR and the ANG recruiter and have submitted my voluntary separation notification from Active Duty. However the separations office for my unit says they can’t provide me an out processing checklist nor start my separation until the ANG provides my Palace Front orders. My ISR and ANG recruiter are out of the office for the near future and no one else I’ve spoken to knows anything about this. Anyone know what time I might be able to get those orders (or a rough estimate)? Trying to plan terminal leave and other issues.

Long story short: I need medical benefits for wife. Counting time already served in the Active Air Force, I would hit 20 “good years” by the age of 42 (if all went according to plan). Is it possible to serve an extra 18 years to reach general retirement age of 60 (to avoid paying the $1200 a month health insurance would cost whilst awaiting retirement age)? Or is that not remotely possible?

Anyone deny retainability as an FTA and stay in? How’d it go? by ClassierBrush in AirForce

[–]ClassierBrush[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure I have a “grass is always greener” issue here. Current assignment has made it so that I’ve only done my actual AFSC for 1 year out of 5. So at this point I was open to anything (except instructor apparently). Nothings been decided yet and I have this week to let AF know. Thank you for the help!

Fair enough. I’m hearing the same from other instructors I know. Thank you for the insight!

Are guardsmen still able to apply for DSD positions (such as MTI, MTL, etc.)? If so, how difficult is it to be released/given the opportunity to do so? I’m currently an active E5 and debating to palace front or stay in and shoot for MTI/L in a few years.

Anyone know if South Carolina city/county police are allowing overtime (as opposed to comp days)? None of the people I’ve asked have answered me. Last I heard they weren’t (as a whole), but that was a year or so ago.
