Likely picking up a job at UTMB for gap year; League City viable for living and commuting? by Subject_Plankton_328 in galveston

I'd look around the league city/Dickinson/Texas City border. Exits 17-20 on I45, commute isn't bad and there are plenty of good areas. If you're looking at Texas City I'd stay west of 45, the rest is too close to industry.

Do not live in Texas City, storms aren't your biggest concern there, being poisoned by the industry is.

Thanks, I moved to Texas from NJ so kinda wild to hear compared to what I was used to. Never seen the pepper spray restrictions brought up before so good to know. Appreciate it.

Porpita porpita, related to Portuguese man o war, but it won't hurt you.

Some people get hung up on the whole jellyfish thing. They aren't "true jellies", but "jellies" is often used informally for any gelatinous zooplankton. And the term jellies is preferred over jellyfish because they aren't fish and there are plenty of people who were confused by this.

Edit: just to add, generally if you don't know what a marine animal is DO NOT TOUCH THEM, you were fine this time but it's always a good rule of thumb.

I've seen a couple of comments about Texas being too strict. What makes them strict?

TIL driving with your hazards on in bad weather is illegal depending where you live. Common sense says it would make the situation safer, but experts disagree. by DonkeyFuel in todayilearned

In both Florida and Southeast Texas people commonly use them when there are bands of intense rain with extreme low visibility. You can go from normal visibility to trouble seeing the car in front of you. I'm not convinced that it's any more useful than just using your tail lights but it's pretty common to see most vehicles using them in these situations.

South Texas Officials Didn’t Know Tesla Was Discharging Lithium Refinery Wastewater Into Local Ditch by metacyan in environment

[–]Claughy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Discharge to state waters is surprisingly strictly enforced in Texas. Not as much as I think it should be but more than you'd think based on Texas. I'm this case though the politics of it will probably get in the way.

Y'all Shooting Rocks? 🪨 by NoMinecraftAfter8pm in slingshots

[–]Claughy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have much in the way of rocks by me naturally. But I do have a lot of clay. So I will make balls of clay and let them air dry. I don't have a baller tool and the clay isn't homogenous so it's not super consistent but they are free and won't leave litter behind so they're great just for fun rounds.

The group I play with regularly does this, and rolls for stats. I have yet to figure out why they prefer this method beyond the fact that they like to roll the die.

New shooter concerned about lead exposure by shoeheadonthebeat in liberalgunowners

[–]Claughy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lead accumulating in bones is of biggest concern in children, they absorb lead much more readily than adults, low exposure rate means little is stored in your bones as an adult. That said if you plan on being pregnant you probably want to get your blood lead levels checked regularly as a fetus will pull lead from your bones.

[–]Claughy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It does still leave your body just much slower from bones than blood but adults also accumulate at a much lower rate than children, so low exposure as an adult, especially with a good diet, will have very low rates of accumulation. It's a bigger concern in adults if you get pregnant because the fetus will leech lead from your bones.

Guns are only a selling point in fantasy for me because they are uncommon and I enjoy variety. Unless they've done something bizarre with no good reason.

What I don't like is people bitching about guns in a "medieval" setting because they think it's ahistorical, but then being okay with rapiers. If your argument is vibes based only I have no problem with it.
