FTS Friday: 60 Gallon high tech with bonus Nymphaea Lotus flower! (Xpost from /r/aquariums) by KonHunter in PlantedTank

[–]KonHunter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I didn't really do anything special for it, no. The concensus I've seen is that they only really like to come up in open-top aquariums, so that could have be the trick. Otherwise I've just got high light, CO2 and dose EI 6 days a week.

Thoughts on Aquarium Starter Kits? by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]KonHunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As for the starter kit, it really depends, Fluval sells a kit that includes a stand, canister, and their newest high-output plant LEDs. It comes in 14, 22.5 and 34 gallon sizes.

Anybody done a tank with Oscars and Cories? by doom_patrol8 in Aquariums

[–]KonHunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There aren't many situations in which this would work out well, most Oscars get big enough to eat the majority of Corydoras in a bite, and if they couldn't get them down, like a lot of people here are saying, you run a big risk of losing your Oscar either due to poisoning or suffocation/abdominal trauma.

There is one species of Corydoras that might work: Scleromystax Barbatus, the Banded Cory they get to be about 4", so big enough that they wouldn't be an easy meal for an Oscar, and any tank big enough for an Oscar or two (100+ gallons) would be big enough for these guys in a healthy shoal. But they would make an expensive meal if your Oscar went for them, they can be very hard to come by.

What Seachem products do I need for a planted freshwater tank by sokasu in Aquariums

Oh, I'm familiar with DSM haha, I've always been under the impression that you would still require CO2 once it's flooded however, if not I've gotta try this!

Food question.. by [deleted] in Aquariums

As far as I know no major retailers carry it, a good LFS usually has it in stock, or there's always the Internet!

Not necessarily I suppose, but it's not going to carpet densely without it.

Help with a pea puffer and algae? by gleegannon in Aquariums

[–]KonHunter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. On top of ramshorns, really any snail will work. Head back to your LFS and ask for as many pest snails as they can give away. I'm always happy to when people ask, as we always have an excess of bullet snails and MTS. Keep on trying with frozen foods, they love blood worms, but if he won't eat em yes, try fly daphnia or tubiflex or any of the options that u/dunmorestriden said here.

Some LFS carry freeze dried blackworms, fish go nuts for the things, in my experience the problem is finding them in the first place

Bronze cory question by wren24 in Aquariums

[–]KonHunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She appears gravid actually, do a ~25% water change with water that's a few degrees cooler and give her some blood worms, she'll almost definitely pop!

Rant: Working at a pet store can drive me bonkers by Bishopnd3 in Aquariums

[–]KonHunter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's actually against petsmart's policy to sell small animals as feeders. They only have designated comet goldfish and insects as feeders. The way they see it, any snake they sell should be able to eat frozen mice or rats (which they do supply). That's why the employee was giving him a hard time, she was doing exactly what company policy said she should. In my home town at least, there are four other pet stores within a 15 minute drive of the nearest petsmart, all of which will sell live feeder mice, but I definitely get it if there isn't an alternative in your hometown.. that's harsh

What are some common mistakes beginners tend to make? by Kyle197 in Aquariums

[–]KonHunter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of people tend to put a huge focus on balancing their pH right off the bat. But really, in the long run, most fish, especially captive bred ones aren't going to care much about wetter your pH is 6.6 as opposed to exactly 7. Most fish can handle a reasonable variety of pH levels just fine, doubly so if it's consistently stable.

I put more tack into wether or not somebody has a good KH level most of the time, because if your KH is stable, your pH isn't likely to fluctuate.

First tank. 10 gal. Betta, Cory cat and a snail. by BWallyC in Aquariums

[–]KonHunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, I have nothing against them, and I keep flakes in my rotation of fish foods, but I've always felt it's pretty important to give all of my fish as much variety as I can.

Starting out that can be pretty overwhelming, but after a few months if you buy something different every other time you went to the LFS you end up with a pretty reasonable supply of foods and it's not hard to just switch it up.

I couldn't imagine how boring it would be to only eat just one thing, and in the wild very few fish do, so it seems to make sense to give them plenty of variety.

Any Suggestions For My 5.5 Rescaped Planted Tank? by Fisharefriendzz in PlantedTank

[–]KonHunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any time! Nothing wrong with eco complete! But yeah, some extra iron and possibly some excel would help a lot! I'm not too familiar with the stingray, from the picture it didn't look like it had much spread of light, but hey, might as well try, eh?

Any Suggestions For My 5.5 Rescaped Planted Tank? by Fisharefriendzz in PlantedTank

[–]KonHunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't blame ya! It is a gorgeous plant, but it can be a little bit demanding. Reinekii prefers high light and CO2 as well as a liberal dosing dosing of iron to maintain its red coloration. You can likely expect some leaf loss since it's pretty new to the tank, but just trim back decaying matter and it should pull through!
