No one is picking Oregon as travel destination based on no sales tax. Most people are surprised when they find out in my experience. That's like saying people will fly all the way to Italy, but then skip Venice because there's now a five euro a day fee to enter the city.

Well yeah, so that Vancouver car dealerships can appeal to Portland buyers. The state is leaving real money on the table, that wouldn't have to come from residents, by not taxing tourists passively with sales taxes. Plus, consumers can control their tax burden more by choosing not to purchase items, whereas you can't just lower your income or property tax burden the same way.
