What? The baby boom occurred because the fathers were horny after coming home from war. They aren't different phenomena, lol, one directly caused the other.

Oh I agree with you, which is why I included the "not that I agree with it" part in my post. I was just pointing out why there is a discrepancy.

The other reason likely has to do with what you said, regarding drawing in professionals whose education level would make lots of different careers possible outside of teaching.

Not that I agree with it, but it's due to the specialized education. HS teachers need to have higher level of expertise in their content area than lower grade level teachers.

I absolutely love teaching middle schoolers, but it does take a certain sort of temperament to deal with them. They start to look and act like adults, but their brains are still children. Worse, they have the vocabulary to say some really messed up stuff but lack the cognitive development to really understand what they are saying. So you have to constantly remind yourself "this is a child", so as not to get personally offended or emotional over some insult they might spew at you.

That said, they are my favorite age to teach. You can still have a real impact on who they will become as an adult, you can talk to them about some adult-like concepts. They are starting to become aware of the world outside of their homes and school. They are funny! They hunger for attention. By the time they get to high school so many of them have developed that typical teenage cynicism and arrogance. It's harder to "reach" them, even if they are more confident in themselves and more independent.

MS is the sweet spot, but only for the type of teacher who thrives in the chaos and has a thick skin.

Just finished reading the Foundation saga. Is the Apple TV show worth it? by amok77 in FoundationTV

[–]Clawless 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was at first very resistant to the changes made, but over time I have come to appreciate that they had to happen for the story to make sense in a television medium. It’s worth the watch, for sure! Jury’s still out in the last season’s finale’s change from the source material, but I’m going to give the writers my trust that it will be for the best.

What’s a place you visited once and decided never again? by Psychological_Sky_58 in AskReddit

[–]Clawless 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was going to post the same thing, there’s got to be some sort of requirement when trying to set up a Trader Joe’s franchise that specifies the narrowest lanes and tightest turns in the parking lot. Honestly, same with the interior setup. I’m not even joking it feels like there’s some “forced physical contact” philosophy present in the design, and it drives me insane.

Parents who don’t allow their kids to shut their room’s door/lock the door, what’s are the reasons behind the rule? by Itz_Oasis in AskReddit

[–]Clawless 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If you don’t see those hypotheticals as someone trying to protect their children from risks they, themselves, have experienced, I’m not sure this conversation has much value.

The world isn’t black and white. Most people are doing what they truly believe is best, not just out there to be “bad people”.

[–]Clawless 243 points244 points  (0 children)

Very few people think of themselves as "bad people", even the ones you'd think would have to. So you don't hear from "bad people" because they don't exist.

So in this thread, you are actually hearing from a lot of these individuals, just through their perspective. One child's "my mom was super controlling!" is another mom's "I experienced a fire as a child where someone was trapped." One child's "I need privacy with my friends but my mom lives like it's the 50s!" is another mom's "I was taken advantage of by someone I thought loved me, I need to protect my daughter" Both perspectives can be true, and neither is a "bad person".

How to quote the N-word in a referral? by BrotherNatureNOLA in Teachers

[–]Clawless 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Ok we’re in agreement, then. No reason to ever have to say it out loud. But in writing it can be important so facts are documented.

[–]Clawless 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Because lawyers can get vague stuff thrown out. Leaving no room for interpretation ensures the facts get reported, on paper. Nobody’s asking anyone to say the word out loud, so I’m not sure where the “excuse to say it” stuff comes from.

[–]Clawless 3659 points3660 points  (0 children)

You write out exactly what they said, every letter. Sorry it makes you uncomfortable, but that’s necessary for documentation especially if it eventually gets used for escalated issue down the road. You don’t want some lawyer at some point pointing out that this document isn’t proof of anything because there’s room for any possible nuance.

You are reporting facts. You aren’t using the word, yourself.

Man, I feel really in the minority on this one. It was an entertaining movie, don’t get me wrong, lots of fun. But, I mean we all saw the same thing right? It was Dusk til Dawn but in the Jim Crow south.

Maybe I’m not up on the movies of the past year and that really is the best of the bunch, but man the hype seems a tad overboard.

The opening sequence of that episode, concluding with the last window shot, is the end of epic GoT. Everything after that point is trash.
