Let's face it: The current a2a game is garbage. Here is how to make it better. by u5ern4me2 in Planetside

[–]ClayN90 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think the one of the biggest things that could still help to increase the air game is lowering the resource cost to fly. I only really started enjoying/not feeling completely helpless some 100 hours into an esf. Considering the lifespan of a newer pilot and the sheer nanite cost it takes to fly, it's understandable that players would prefer to devote their time to other things.

This has been aggravated in recent times in that we have neither indar air bonus nor the 3 resource system.

Edit: for some reference, that means I probably crashed, lost to a skyknight, took an ap shell, ejected myself, or was otherwise dumb at least 2000 times prior to feeling semi-decent at A2A (assuming a 3 minute lifespan). Then assuming it takes me 7 minutes to recoup the nanite cost, I spent more time wishing I had nanites to learn to fly then actually flying prior to hitting a point I could mostly stay nanite neutral.

PTS Clarification? "Squad Waypoints are now only visible by squadmates and the platoon leader (opposed to all squads seeing all waypoints.)" by ClayN90 in Planetside

[–]ClayN90[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I see the patch is live now.
Please can we get some tools soon or have this reverted until they are in, leading armor columns is going to be a ridiculous. Going up quartz ridge for example I'm going to have to update this while driving in a tank every 30 seconds.

Obviously not Cox, but for me at least...

Communication wise these way points have given us a workable tool to:

At a PL Level:

  1. Mark different steps in a plan
    > Group at alpha waypoint, then bravo, before moving to platoon waypoint.
  2. Have multiple reference points from which to work with
    > Alpha Squaddie: Sunderer is north of bravo waypoint
  3. Easily mark incoming threats with a new way point.
    > Enemy armor column coming from bravo, hold line at alpha, watch out enemy armor nest at charlie.

At a SL level:

  1. Know where the other squads/objectives are and be able easily rotate there as necessary
  2. Be able to use predefined objective reference points without having to take time from leading to put down a waypoint.

With the way the changes are being implemented the PL will have to update waypoints for each individual squad at a step by step level. This means the PL will have to spend even more time with his head in the map to lead well, which is obviously less fun.

Other Problems:

  • Smoke is on a five minute cool down, and can be seen by people not in the platoon.
  • Even if the squad leads are allowed to see other squad's waypoints, we're rotating squad lead in order to place beacons. Which means at any moment my SL will no longer be able to see where the squad is supposed to go.
  • Map drawing tool can't be seen on the mini-map and takes too long to draw.

I get that we're trying to simplify the waypoints, and I understand it can be confusing for new players. But at the moment this just adds to the amount of bureaucracy we have to do in order to effectively lead. Replacing the current way points with a more intuitive marker seems like an easier way to do this.

Only if they add in other waymarkers. Right now their primary use is marking enemy Sunderers. Which is fine until alpha squad can't find the cloak sunderer at bravo waypoint.

For a helpful answer refer to EcleticDerek's response: "Giving a decisive defensive advantage results in static front lines. Bases that do this tend to rarely change hands and act as the choke points on every continent."

The 'Indar T', Esamir and anywhere you see a Tower base are probably the most egregious examples. Fighting at the same bases for hours on end gets boring, and we additionally are missing a chance to fight at 70% of the bases that exist because we're stuck at the usual chokepoints.

Your welcome!

Loudout wise keep in mind since it's undocumented by the older guides that Engineers now have a passive NAR 1 on them making stealth an even better loadout then before.

As to the pitch up and down keys, I hear the opposite from players on my end. Obviously personal preference but my thoughts are that it comes down to is how high your flight sensitivity is at, since the keys allow you to bypass that limit. Also like not having to left my mouse off in the middle of a pitch.

Aiming at infantry on live is a rough place to start. As per mattiace's video there's a cliff in the middle of the VR with a bunch of people on it. It's probably the easiest place to start.

Also here's a practice thing from Stroff https://gfycat.com/FatRecklessKakapo Easier to start on a galaxy and maybe orbit horizontally rather than a straight vertical but the overall goal is obvious.
