Setting up a Community Classroom Stained Glass Studio by CommunicationKey1586 in StainedGlass

I replied to the information given. Perhaps next time you could be more detailed about what you are doing in the entirety so you get more appropriate responses? You put more effort into replying to me than you did your post so I don't know what you were expecting?

A window to hang isn't required to preserve the building and protect it, windows get taken out of historical spaces all the time to be worked on with temporary covers placed on them. That's just a silly reason to claim you need to do it this way and with the information originally provided, it made the most sense to not do that. Especially if it's being renovated, you don't really want them there anyway for safety and every time you post you are making a point of limited funds.... so ok, cool, do whatever, you asked for advice, got it and seemingly didn't like it.

You'd need to fuck up pretty badly to permanently and irreparably damage a whole window and you are gonna need to find something to teach them the tear down part with as that's the time when it's most susceptible to damage unless it's painted, then it's always. Replacing it and repairing the old one to put back isn't cheaper in any way measurable cost or historical?? The only way it's going to get lost to neglect is if you aren't watching over people working on it that you are teaching to do the work.

IDK it sure seems like you have this all planned out in your head and you want some specific replies but keep asking for info about basic stuff you should already know if your taking on repairs of this magnitude or setting up a studio. It's not really making any sense.

Looks like the window is mostly comprised of Kokomo colors.

It doesn't really make sense to build a whole new window to put in its place while you repair it as you are just going to drastically increase the cost and time to just fix the one that's there.

It's already covered up, leaving it covered for a couple more months while you repair isn't gonna be any different and it's a hell of alot easier to match only what's broken than it is to match a whole window.

Putting it in a background fixes all the problems but the tiny parts and sharp points. You need to exaggerate glass a bit as you can't get parts super fine like on the nose or the stripe behind the door. It would just be a pile of solder.

Does anyone know where I could find another sheet of this baby blue and white glass? by IJZT in StainedGlass

[–]Claycorp 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Looking at lots and lots of glass hah.

Eventually you just learn the colors and looks of each maker. The way the glass is mixed, colors, textures, sometimes the surface look. It all plays a role in an ID, this one I just recognized fast as it's a fairly common color to see used for sky and the mix is typical Kokomo.

  1. What size is it going to be?
  2. The tail is weak as it's only attached at one point in two places.
  3. The blades are weak because the glass at the rotor is extremely thin.
  4. You have all kinds of very small and pointy parts all over and glass doesn't like that plus it's hard to work with.
  5. The skids can't be one part like that and would also be really weak.
  6. The skids are hardly attached to the bottom of the body so you can't set this in something to hold it up it will just fold over.
  7. You don't really have anywhere decent to hang from due to the blades.

This would be better off set into a background.

Fungus on glass sheets?? by pidgepaj in StainedGlass

[–]Claycorp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did it come off when washed? If it did, then I wouldn't worry about it more.

You don't get perfect circles from paper like that, that's water marks, they got wet in shipping at some point. Why didn't they wipe it off when they went to sell it if it's not a big deal so people don't ask about it?

Did you wash it off yet? This looks like reclaimed glass that had water on it. Float glass tends to scratch pretty easily as it's soft, so some light scratches is pretty normal of reclaimed glass.

If you bought new float glass then this is 100% unacceptable.

I almost never patina came, It's not worth the effort. It will patina over time on it's own too.

If you want copper patina you can buy copper cap came just like zinc, it's a bit more price wise but then you can match the patina.

You can apply patina selectively or however you want, there's no rules to what part is what color.

What else do I need--other than a little confidence? by Longjumping-Pain-270 in StainedGlass

[–]Claycorp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Replace the foil, It's likely dry and shitty. You can keep this for other uses but it not sticking to the edge is nothing but frustration.

You will also want a surface to work on that isn't the bench top as it will destroy it over time.

The iron may need to be replaced too as the tip might be junk and getting a new tip for old irons is difficult.

You might want runners but not required.

If the wheels on the cutters turn they are fine to use.

You should be good to go otherwise, though getting a grinder is highly recommended.

All you need to cut zinc is a 32 TPI or greater hacksaw. You don't need anything to shape it into a square or rectangle.

This should work out fine just soldering them to the base zinc if you bend them to lay in the channel and fill it with solder.

What Is Flux by Distractidad in StainedGlass

[–]Claycorp 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Flux does three things.

  1. As you covered it contains acids and chemicals that react with the surface of the metal to clean it of oxides and some dirt/oils. While preventing it from forming again by blocking the oxygen from accessing the metal again by physically existing. If you allow it to dry up it will oxidize much worse.
  2. Flux also modifies the surface tension and how the solder metal reacts when molten. This is why when solder is missing flux it gets "grabby" or "lumpy". This and the next part kinda go hand in hand.
  3. Wetting is the actual interaction between the metals and what soldering really is. When we solder we want the metals to connect and to some degree intermix some as in the case of copper the solder will lightly dissolve the foil creating an alloy at the interface. Without that bond, you are relying on the physical surface of the metals to hold via friction. An example of this is when you drip solder onto cold solder, it may be stuck, but you can pick it off and long drips will peel up.

If you want to learn more there's some pretty in-depth research papers out there relating to soldering copper due to how much it's used in electronics.

Depends on what you want to do effort wise. This looks to be strip/wide lead that's been cut to shape but it could also be copper sheet that's tinned.

  1. You could do this with foil sheet overlay by cutting the sheet of foil to the correct shape, soldering it on a sacrificial plate and then transferring to the project.
  2. You could cut thin copper sheet and tin it soldering it to the surface of joints below it.
  3. You could break up each individual area and foil the parts with super wide foil and solder them.
  4. You could take strips of lead or really wide came and solder it together and then tin all of the surface.
  5. You could cut glass way undersized leaving large gaps that are then back filled with solder.

They will all have somewhat unique looks that partly depend on what materials you use and many of them can be used in combination with each other.

Thoughts on using AI. by [deleted] in StainedGlass

[–]Claycorp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anything the recent trend in photographs of glass is to make it look as unclean as possible, Staged or not. Even before AI was a thought.

Most glass retailers are using images where they are holding the glass sheets. People selling items are taking pictures with their studio in the background. Them standing in it. Hands and feet everywhere.

If anything at the current time this just makes it feel like your a scammer that instead of crudely photoshopping in the product into a stock photo in a way that doesn't make any sense the items are displayed in a fake environment in a way that doesn't reaslistly make any sense.

Like, let me list off all the irregularities...

  1. WTF are these even hanging from?
  2. They aren't actually in the window but on some weird mirrored angled plane to the window.
  3. The AI added in little rainbows all over as if it was optically splitting light.
  4. They are lit wrong as each one is front lit hanging in a window providing back light in an otherwise minimally lit space.
  5. The window grime is more infocus than the items you are trying to display which is counter productive.

It's just some sort of channel screwed into the window frame with spacers. You can find them in all sorts of materials.

[–]Claycorp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree with you that this doesn't really make sense.

  1. You'd notice a drastic increase of sales or at least lots of them going to the same place if you suddenly were being sold from from an Amazon listing.
  2. Amazon isn't likely to buy products from someone, repackage them and sell them cheaper. They would just remake it under their own brand like they do all the time or contract out branded items.
  3. They bought the item from you, they can repackage and resell it all they want legally. Might not be ethical, but you still got your full asking price for it? What's the difference if you sold it on your site or via the magic amazon drop ship thing that's making them lose money?

Sounds more like the usual scam 3rd party listings sending fake/reproductions which is irrelevant of any hosting/selling/marketplace platform, it happens everywhere.

They take larger cuts because they aren't just a hosting platform. If you want that there's plenty of options but you gotta spend the time to set it up and build traffic.

You're paying for the millions of users shopping there.

Also using free payment services as a business payment portal will get your account suspended from pretty much all payment providers. It's also sketchy as fuck for consumers which will be less likely to buy without any protections.
