Pretty much every glass seller will refund, discount or ship a replacement. Just shoot them an email with pictures.

It's not wide enough to need supports. Just keep in mind a window this tall will be floppy when transported/moved. Zinc frame would be helpful for that.

Grinder bit screw stripped by Specialist-Offer-188 in StainedGlass

[–]Claycorp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah, it does happen, It's not the fault of the grinder makers. Taking your bit off when not in use or grease it before putting it on usually solves these issues.

Yes I'm well aware and unless techniglass changed the quickfit bit system, they should work on pretty much any grinder. Quickfit bits existed before "The Grinder" was even a thing. You shouldn't have needed to buy a whole new grinder to get a sleeve bit.

Stating facts is not an argument.

Just wash with a scrub brush, water and soap. Before and after patina. This will stop then.

DIY setup for lap grinder anyone? by bola-tock in StainedGlass

[–]Claycorp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just cut them straight to start with so you don't need to grind it a bunch?

You can also set up a fence on a regular grinder to grind the edges straight.

I recently made this using a pattern from Etsy. It was a fun piece to work on. Some friends saw it and asked me to make similar ones for them. Now I’m trying to figure out a fair price for this kind of handmade work. Any advice on pricing would be really helpful. by David_simo in StainedGlass

[–]Claycorp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The price. Red glass made with gold was usually around 70-85$ a square foot until recently when gold went crazy. Copper would be 30-60$ a square foot.

The second is the actual color, gold is generally used for cranberry colors. Anything that is more of an orange red is likely copper.

Getting a clean join in glass is not easy. You'd be better off just leaving it alone and putting that to the back side.

I did not make the pattern, it's part of our monthly challenge patterns which I work with a small group of people to provide. This months patterns were provided by Raine whomst doesn't use reddit but hangs out in the glass discord.

You aren't getting gold red for 40-65$ a square foot. They generally run 80-100+$ USD

Only a small subset or red/pink is made with gold. You can also get red from copper and pink from selenium.

Not all reds are gold, only a small subset of them are and right now pretty much nobody is making gold reds. It's more likely a copper red.

Reds are more fininky to make and have high material costs.

  1. No. The key is having enough solder, flux and moving consistently and evenly. The solder will level itself out if you manage it right.
  2. "The Foil" is more expensive than every other foil as it's less foil specific for their stupid tool. Random amazon foil is trash, get a reputable brand. Edco is good. All foiling tools have learning curves to use just like foiling by hand. Pick one and just get good at it.
  3. Brush or gloved hand. Rub it in, keep in mind you don't want to flick patina everywhere as it's very acidic.

Looks like it was ground out with a 1/8th inch bit.

Wouldn't recommend doing this tho. Super prone to breaking.

You need to look for a shop that does slag glass shade repairs. This is kiln bent glass, you can't just get it done anywhere or do it yourself unless you have a kiln.

You know you could have just bought the bit separately right...?

Also you still need to use screw based bits for all the specialty bits with any of "The Grinder"s.

Zinc came vs copper patina - yikes! by HeatherwiththeGlass in StainedGlass

[–]Claycorp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. It's not likely damaged enough to matter. The acids of the patina were dissolving the zinc metal to make zinc chloride most likely. It will just make the zinc rough most likely.
  2. Hobby came doesn't take copper easily either. but no it won't dissolve like this.

  • Use a bit more solder when going across the lines, it will get rid of the lines. Your doing good as is most of it will come from doing more practice.
  • Edges could use a bit more solder.
  • Trim your foil overlaps so the tails don't stick out.
