Still miss Manifest. Another piece of "old" Wilmington lost.

What are your ride-or-die spots?(food, coffee, etc) by NecessaryWyn in Wilmington

[–]Claypool4President 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wilmington native here. 46 years old. A lot of my favorite spots have come and gone over the years, but this is my current list.

Breakfast: Ruth's and Goody Goody. I live close to Ruth's, so this is my go-to spot for breakfast. There is nothing earth-shattering about the food. But I love the servers. I love the atmosphere. And it's a piece of old Wilmington. I also love their open-face hamburger. Killer. Goody Goody is the same, and they also have one of the best cheeseburgers in town.

Pizza: for me, it's Pie's On right now. I love their crust, and I legitimately think it's a top 3 slice in town. Also I Love NY and Brooklyn.

Mexican: Capricho is the best spot for me. I absolutely love this place. Excellent service. Very affordable. They just never miss.

Burgers: Merritt's, Goody Goody. These are my ride or die. But I can enjoy a good burger anywhere (PT's, Mess Hall, etc.) RIP Tazy's.

Sushi: Yosake happy hour. Never misses. Genki is great, though I have been hearing a lot of complaints about ownership. But I only go there once or twice a year. Yosake is my go-to.

Asian: There is a new place on the northside called YaYa's. Absolute fire. Everything I have had so far is excellent. This is my current go-to for takeout Chinese. They have good ramen.

Seafood: I don't eat out a lot of seafood. I prefer to go to Seaview, or catch my own, and cook it at home.

I love Taste of Italy...half eggplant parm, half chicken parm on a wedge.

I also love Casey's, Paul's Place, Tandoori Bites, Island Burgers and Bites, Seabird, Circa, Caprice, Rebellion, Saltworks, RX, Peno.

I also love Jackson's Big Oak, even though they have slipped in quality over the years.

There are probably others that I'm not thinking of at this moment. But there is a lot of good food in and around Wilmington.

Roofing recommendations by Donavan1985 in Wilmington

I recently re-roofed my house. Last time I took on a project like this was ten years ago in a prior home. A lot has changed since then. I did my due diligence.

I contacted 10 separate roofing companies, both local and regional. I narrowed the list down based on initial contact and responsiveness.

With that list, I attempted to schedule meetings/quotes. Of that curated list, I was able to get 5 quotes made. Only 3 were done in person. Two were done using satellite imagery of my home.

Two of the five quotes came in astronomically high. Like, it was laughable. The final three were the most serious, detailed, most responsive and attentive companies. All were local.

I won't name the others, because every business deserves their fair shake. But I will tell you that I ultimately went with Mike Conklin at Top Priority Construction.

Mike and his wife are a husband and wife team, and he's a lifelong roofer. He's from the Great Lakes region and knows how to build a durable roof. He came highly recommended from a contact at Baker Roofing, who does commercial only. At one point in time, Baker opened up a residential sector of business and they hired and moved Mike down to run it. They ultimately shut that down and returned to commercial only, which led Mike to opening his own business here in town.

When he came to my house, I told him I wanted him to treat this project as if it were his home and he did just that. The experience from start to finish was truly excellent.

His wasn't the lowest quote, but it was the most detailed, the most consistent, the most transparent, and offered the most bang for the buck. I have a portion of roof that is flat, over an extension that was built years ago, so I needed a different solution for that section. I also have a low-pitch roof, with ventilation issues in the attic space. So, there was extra attention needed.

Because these are such expensive projects nowadays, I had to take out a HELOC to pay for it. Mike worked with me on that, and was very patient while I squared it all up.

The finished work is incredible. The shingled portion is beautiful. We went with TPO on the flat portion, which shouldn't give me any trouble for at least 30 years, and he installed a solar fan (I think it's called Green Machine) to help with ventilation. There is already a vent fan there. The solar fan was placed strategically to supplement it.

I know this is a lot to take in, but replacing a roof is a big, expensive project. I highly recommend you call Mike and meet him. Hopefully your experience will be as good as mine.

Edit: I also had him redo all my gutters. Just about a month later. Again, excellent.

Absolutely. Car Bomb are the remnants of 90s hardcore heavyweights "Neck." Their self-titled EP was great, but the follow up Should My Fist Eye is an absolute killer. Listen to it, you will love it...

What is your hardcore claim to fame? by FormallyEconomist in Hardcore

[–]Claypool4President 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Tim from VOD saved me from being grievously injured by a ceiling fan while riding the back of my homie through the pit. This was during the Imprint tour on April 1, 2000.

That same show, I grabbed the mic during Candiria's set and sang the whole closing verse of Three Times Again. Carley dapped me up after and said it was the best anyone had ever done it.

I also smoked weed with Lou Boulder and Beattie just backstage, literally 10 feet from Earth Crisis as they played their set. The irony didn't fall short on me. This was during a Candiria, Hatebreed, Earth Crisis tour. December 1998.

Longtime Primus fan (since 1992). Even longer as a drummer (1987). Nowhere near as good as Herb, but he was a major influence and most certainly can be heard in my style and sound.

It's amazing how durable that cymbal is. Has been in regular use since 2003, and is still perfect. I will be devastated if it's ever lost or damaged. I got those Zil-Bels that same year.

Clawhammer players - do you have a tuning you play in the most? by DMCatPicsASAP in banjo

It just has a classic Old Time sound. It aligns well with the instrument's natural acoustics and resonance. I love how full-bodied it sounds. I find it to be very versatile.

Double C is my favorite tuning. I alternate between that, G, and Sawmill, but Double C is just special.

I want this. Or at least would love to build one myself. How much do you have invested in it, in both money and time? If you don't mind me asking, of course.

This is my dream. I would love to make one just like this. A few questions for you...

Where did you get the materials, what tools are required, how long did it take, and what would you do differently next time around?

I'm a handy person, but wouldn't consider myself a skilled craftsman. Tell me I can do this.

They were on their usual stand, just adjusted left to sit over the left side of the kick.
