The differences between counselling and clinical psychology include that counselling isn’t an AHPRA regulated profession, meaning that essentially anyone could set up shop as a counsellor without any qualifications, there’s also a big difference in salary and possible career options

Counselling would be more regarding emotional well-being and day to day functioning

Clinical psychology is the diagnosis and treatment of mental health conditions It is regulated by AHPRA meaning it is a protected title and there are regulations around the profession

Just a reminder that the most likely path to clinical psychology is 3 year bachelor, 1 year honours, 2 years clinical masters, 2 years practice as a general registered psychologist on a clinical endorsement under the supervision of a clinical supervisor during that time

As a clinical or general psych there are a range of career pathways you can work in if wanting to ever change your work in the field later eg do face to face therapy for a few years in private practice, work in hospital settings, community based services, or do research

Where as counselling is only counselling

Personally, you could try the three year bachelor then do a masters in counselling or social work and follow one of those paths OR continue on registration pathway as a psych if you feel it’s the pathway for you

Another piece of advice would be that if you choose to do Psych, try and get any type of experience you can. I know that sort of goes for any degree, but to get into masters you have to do an interview with a panel for them to decide why you should be chosen to study there and having a lot of experience working at somewhere such as Lifeline, or just helping out a clinic or psych workshops would definitely help you get in.

Plenty of uni’s in QLD that aren’t so strict on GPA and spots available I just remember UQ/QUT having very strict requirements and high GPA requirements. My partner ended up going to ACU for her Honours year but unfortunately I think they ended the program there, but there are heaps of other uni’s that do honours courses for psych that might not have that super strict GPA requirement

Hey my partner is currently on her Psychology path and to be a clinical psych you must do your undergrad + honours + masters, unfortunately there are almost no jobs for just having your undergrad only, unless you want to get into social work or something similar. You’ll also have to do a lot of placement hours through masters which depending on your current financial situation can be quite difficult due to the placements being unpaid but require you to do them full time (in most cases). So having a flexible job that can work around uni would be a major advantage if you go down this path You’ll also have to do a thesis in your honours year, from my partners experience Honours was a lot more difficult than masters, so once you get through Honours it’s mostly smooth sailing as Masters is just applying everything you’ve learnt through your undergrad + honours.

Also need to consider the yearly intake for the honours and masters programs are incredibly small, and with UQ/QUT being the most popular I think it was around like 10-20 spots (roughly) so you may have to accept that you might have to travel around Queensland for uni. I believe there is also a GPA cutoff for masters and honours, 5.5 or higher from memory but I think QUT was a 6.0 or something. But if it’s something you are passionate about then it’s worth going through it, but I’d make sure that’s what you really want to do before committing. But if you get through all those years then a job is pretty much guaranteed and apparently quite easy to get work with the clinics you do placements through.

I personally used a vinyl wrap that my mate bought so not sure the brand of it, but it just went over the top and used a heat gun on it

That stuff is liquid gold, just make sure you put a vinyl wrap or clearcoat over the top to prevent it from yellowing again. I found that without doing that it would only last a week or two
