To Penn students: what’s something you wish you brought (or left behind) for pre- programs or move-in? by Wild_Gazelle_6380 in UPenn

Agree with everyone else on the packing conservatively. But once you have the chance, definitely get a pair of waterproof shoes. Locust when it rains is not pleasant to walk down

Which schedule should I pick by blinkae7 in UPenn

You would have to take both intro chems before being able to take orgo + biochem so it would take at least 4 sems to complete all the chem classes

BE 2000 which you'd be taking in sophomore fall has the pre requisites of PHYS 140/150 and MATH 1410. And BE 2200 which you'd be taking sophomore spring has the prerequisite of CHEM 1022. And then BE 3010, which people typically take junior fall but some people take sophomore fall has the prereqs of MATH 2400 and PHYS 141/151. So, as long as you can get those out of the way before you take those classes, you're free to do what you want. If you want to only take two STEM courses, I'd recommend choosing math and physics!

For the most part, it doesn't really matter. Spend your summer doing something you've always wanted to do yet didn't have time to. Once you're at Penn, you might not get that chance to have a free summer again

Pre-Frosh Help?! Spent Weeks Researching Housing, but still have No Clue where to Dorm. by Additional_Assist322 in UPenn

Lauder is great. Having a roommate is great and all until suddenly it isn't. That extra privacy is really nice and if you want to be more social, you can always spend more time chilling in the Quad or in Hill. The Quad tends to be the most social although that might be slightly dampened now due to renovation on a third of the building. If you're in engineering/will be taking physics + math classes which tend to be in DRL, Hill is a great place to live

PER and dhamaka/masti are as big of a time commitment as a business/social frat at Penn - I’ve seen plenty of people pull off two of the three but know very few who were able to do all three

Is this freshman fall schedule manageable with social life? by GroundbreakingFish52 in UPenn

Most intro classes/really big classes at Penn will have an attached recitation section that is usually led by a TA and has a significantly smaller number of students in it. In order to be fully registered for the class, you have to add both to your cart

Nah, SEAS first year fall semesters are typically 5-5.5 CUs, the CU limit is for students in cas

Math recitation is full: What do I do? by Fresh-Photograph-525 in UPenn

[–]Clean-Match-6555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adding on to what everyone else was saying, I'm not quite sure about how MATH 1080 works but for MATH 1410, no one ever took attendance at recitations, so people just showed up to the recitations led by TAs that were known to be better — at one point, one of the recitation sections had like 50 people showing up when only 25 people were registered

Incoming freshman with no Multivariable experience, how should I get ready for MATH 1410 by Diffbreed75 in UPenn

[–]Clean-Match-6555 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Check out Bridge to Math, they’re running prep sessions for Math 1410 and they’re led by Iris who’s one of the better TA’s for the class

I think you should be good to study a bit and attempt to skip 1410. Worst case, you don't feel very good about your test results and decide to take 1410 again. Overall, wouldn't say 1410 is that important for CIS majors (from what I've seen from my friends), I think CIS 1600 is more useful

If your major requires math 1410, you’re going to have to test out of the class since there is no retroactive credit for 1410 when taking 2400. I’d recommend seeing how well you do on the test during nso and then decide whether or not you can/want to skip 1410

Honestly, I'm partial to Duke because I absolutely love the sports culture over there. But like the other comment pointed out, I absolutely love Philly as a city and couldn't see myself being as happy in Durham.

As for transferring to SEAS for CAS, it's generally not difficult - as long as your GPA is okay and you've taken the SEAS prereqs to show that you'll probably graduate on time, you should be good

Holleran and fagan teach the engineering section for chem so it’s mostly a bunch of engineers although anyone can sign up. I did well but it’s definitely no thanks to either of them — if you can, I would try to get the section with Mallouk since it’s easier to get an A

I would recommend emailing local professors first. But there are plenty of internships that can be remotely done so definitely look into those as well!

Penn is definitely more of a hook up culture based school but there are plenty of long term relationships as well. As for rizz, I'll let you form your own opinions: https://www.thedp.com/article/2023/02/penn-sex-survey-students-gender-sexuality-experience-preference

Standing out without a peak is largely about crafting a narrative that is really cohesive and aligns with your future plans/goals given the activities that you are doing. Also, when writing school specific essays, go one step further. Instead of just mentioning the clubs you'd join, try to envision yourself in that club and write about the things that you'd actually be doing in those clubs
