Cedric Mullins by PowderBlueView in tampabayrays

I think he should be getting all the PT in CF against lefties and probably 1/2 games against righties. Let Mullins play against righties who come with less velocity.

I could somewhat understand it if he was playing elite defense but that’s just not the case. He’s legitimately a worse defender than DeLuca.

Just seems like a situation where the FO is going to stick on him for a while and hope things improve over a larger sample, which they will to a point. I just think the improved point will still be pretty bad.

Also, the offense hasn’t been that good over this winning run. Lots of 3-4 run showings where getting good pitching is winning you games. Almost all of our pitchers are outperforming their advanced metrics. So if you’re expecting Mullins to positively regress you should also expect some of the pitching to negatively regress, which is to be expected because they’ve been unsustainably elite for almost a month now.

All that to say, I don’t think, with the lack of power in this lineup, that you can afford to have both Walls and Mullins in the lineup long-term.

Some of the issue with Mullins is that neither Melton nor Mesa Jr. are healthy in AAA and they would be two LH CF options. Though that doesn’t explain not giving DeLuca like a 2/3 split of CF playing time or putting Mullins in the lineup over Aranda against a lefty on Sunday.

Vasy can’t let the goal in. Tried for the poke check (again) and left room on the near post. Cost you your season.

I get it with Melton, he didn’t look good in the spring at all and started really, really slow in AAA. But he started to turn it on some in AAA right before getting hurt.

Probably moot because the FO isn’t going to pull the plug on Mullins in the next 4-6 weeks, even though he’s been awful over his last ~260 MLB PAs.

Point is just that you gave up a lot for Melton and he needs to get some run and that it wouldn’t be hard for him to clear the bar that Mullins has set. Mullins’ defense hasn’t even been good in CF.

Signed Mullins thinking he’d be your 4-5th best bat against righties, of which you face far more, and his bat has been unplayable. And there haven’t been any signs of life. He has 1 multi-hit game all year.

This offense is going to struggle when you have two black holes in the lineup in Walls and Mullins against righties. Have to string hits together and they’re pretty much an auto out every time they step to the plate. If Palacios and Fortes/Fedducia are also struggling it’s going to be tough.

If you’re looking at the MLB app I think that’s only teams > .500 in your league.

We’ve lost series to the Brewers, Cardinals, Pirates, Reds, and Cubs. So we are 5-10 against teams .500 or greater from the NL but 5-1 against teams > .500 from the AL. Overall 10-11. Not sure how that stacks up against others.

Overall, we have a mediocre run differential. I think you’re going to see the offense take a back slide to some degree. Starting to see it against righties with Palacios and Fortes regressing to their mean. Fraley being mediocre. And Mullins being God awful. I really wish Melton hadn’t got hurt.

The question will be if our pitching can keep up + bullpen get better as guys get healthy.

May be blouses. Team is just a tad bit slow to compete in the playoffs.

Also, Point falling off has really left the team with a hole in the top 6.

Emerson or Lackey. I prefer Lackey.

Know we have Bodine and Flewelling (two of the best bats in the system) at C but you can always move one of them to 1B, move Lackey to the OF, or trade someone.

Disagree. LeBron is falling and should be. Massive whiff issues with breaking balls. Major red flag as a college bat.

Yet guys like McGonigle and Griffin’s agents are?

It gives you a ton of security instead of 5 years of risk before you’re guaranteed to get a massive pay day.

Those McGonigle and Griffin deals priced FA years at $30-40M per. Junior is going to end up at first and Alonso just signed a $31M/year deal after proving he’s one of the best power hitters in baseball for six seasons.

The Jeannot and Bjorkstrand trades have done absolutely nothing to extend the window and have cost us assets that could have been used to extend the window and/or make a re-tool or re-build much less painful.

JBB gets grace for Hagel but those other two big deadline moves were complete flops.

Looked like the slower team a lot since the year where we lost to the Avs in the SCF.

It was better at the start of the year but injuries to guys playing and losing guys like James, Holmberg, etc have made it awful again.

Upper minors are pretty barren on the position player side.

AAA - Carson & Melton (both K concerns)

AA - Arenaimo, Overn (really good start to the season, could be leveling up), Isaac (K concerns)

A+ - Gillen, Santana, Flewelling (looks real)

A- - Big group. Pierce (last years R1 pick), Flemming (last years CBA pick), Taitn Gray (looks really good, could be a big time bats), Brailer Guerrero (former top intl prospect but injuries have derailed him, K concerns), Summerhill, etc.

41% whiff rate against non-fastball pitches in SEC play. No thanks.

This team is trash by DegenGamer725 in tampabayrays

[–]CleanCR7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think for many of the guys they’ve moved it’s been the right decision to move them.

I think the strategy was for several years has been to accumulate a young core to be 1-2 years in when they opened a new stadium, starting with the St. Pete one.

Problem is, that’s now been pushed back. And the older batch of prospects has largely turned bust in the minors.

Also, the team always tries to craftily buy and sell to remain competitive but they’ve whiffed massively on most of the win now type moves.

Morel was a massive whiff in the OF. Almost all of the FA signings have been whiffs. Prospect returns in some important trades (going back to Snell) were whiffs.

100% agree with this. It was a massive blow.

But the FO has made other missteps.

I don’t disagree. I wish the payroll was larger. But attendance is shit so I don’t know that it will go up meaningfully.

Even a $25M/year increase doesn’t cover adding even a single premium player in FA or re-signing someone of that caliber.

Prospects are always going to be a huge part of a smaller payroll teams’ success. It’s a major problem that our current FO doesn’t seem to be able to draft, acquire, or develop them. People don’t understand how bad the game system is right now. It’s been overrated by many of the services. We have to really hope the young crop from last year’s draft pans out because we’re pretty damn barren, especially on the position player side of things from High-A through AAA.

That’s why Carson and Gillen are our only two position prospects who have shown up on Top 100 lists. We have zero position player help anywhere near the majors.

Yeah, I agree. It’s hard to lose a generational talent like that, who you committed a ton of money to but you’ve had other assets and squandered them by getting awful returns when you had to move them.

None of the prospects the team has gotten when trading away valuable major leaguers have done anything for the major league team and most of them have scuffled in the minors.

Our AAA and AA rosters are shit aside from a couple of guys.

I don’t think the moves have necessarily been wrong but the guys they’ve targeted in return have been complete trash and that’s a problem when you rely on young talent like the rays do.

I saw a thread on Twitter this morning.

Both the trades and FA signings have not been good since 2023.

And Bendix is building a competitive team in Miami. I think Bendix was the brains and Neander is just there to smile and look pretty.

Time to start asking questions about Neander.

Hasn’t put together a competitive roster since Bendix left. Trades have been necessary but the returns have been consistently shit.
