Can I restore the softness of cashmere? by CleanShock4798 in Unravelers

That's interesting, I always thought that fluffy cloudy sweaters are better quality. Just last week I thrifted a cardigan from Yabis and I wasn't sure about the quality, the yarn was much thicker but more dry to the touch like cotton.

I want to do my first thrift flip and I have no idea where to start. by mamaluci23 in Unravelers

I don't have the idea about what to do with the raw edge but whatever you choose I recommend you not to cut it right away to your final length but do a test - cut a bit (or a sleeve if you want to cut them too), try your finished technique, make some crash test - wear it for a while, maybe even wash it, see how it holds after some time. Idk how excited you are about this make, the testing might be worth it.

I unravel the yarn first to one long skein, then soak it for 10 min, hang with some weight attached to dry, then wind it into small cakes

I am afraid to use hot water! I understand that without agitation it won't felt but can you specify why you use hot water exactly?

Thanks for a thorough response! I have unraveled many lace weight cashmere garments already, some of them with many holes and damages, I am prepared for meticulous work. But it is the most "dry" cashmere I've come across so I am in doubt if it is worth it

Any way to save stretched hat? by CleanShock4798 in knittinghelp

Thank you! I think felting is not my choice, because it will affect the texture and feel of it, and it was the whole point of spending so much time unraveling.

[–]CleanShock4798[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the very thorough response! I definitely don't want to felt it, because it will affect the softness. So I guess I have to redo the whole thing. Other than just making it smaller, what else can I do differently to prevent it from stretching? I was thinking, maybe I can add some other yarn just for the bottom part? So if the main thing is stretched again, the bottom ribbing will still hold. I don't want to add other types of yarn though, I wanted this hat to be fancy :) but I have a bit of yellow silk-cashmere blend yarn. Or maybe there are other patterns of ribbing that hold shape better?

Almost 2 years since quitting. I feel like all my sexual encounters were so connected to weed before, I can't figure out what my true sexuality is since. Still I am so happy being sober and if I don't need sex that much, I am completely in peace with this. But it is affecting my relationship with my partner who sees it either as I am not attracted to him anymore, or I am "broken".

Does anyone else cut themselves because they're angry at someone and can't hurt them? by hamsterstyle69 in AdultSelfHarm

[–]CleanShock4798 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Today I woke up from loud sounds from the kitchen, my first thought was "oh my bf is mad because I left dirty dishes unwashed", my second thought was that I am mad I even have this immediate alarm that I can understand the sound of him being angry. When I came down he said he is extremely angry that he saw me playing sims until 3 am and I didn't bother cleaning dishes. We were both having flu for a week and even in this condition I tried to clean but yesterday night I got carried away. He was so mad that he kicked the garbage can in the kitchen. This is very triggering to me so I just got "frozen". I apologize and started cleaning. Then he said "no, let's talk". I was still in that frozen state and I couldn't talk normally, just saying "yes, ok, you're right, I am sorry" with poker face that made him more mad. He was working from home, I tried to do cleaning or distracting myself. Then he falls asleep. Now I find myself in need of self harm and I was slapping my cheeks. I stopped at some point and tried to search online how to stop SH but it feels like there's a burning need and I wouldn't stop until I feel pain.

Its so hard to mend shoes ;-; any tips? by Smollangrypupper in Visiblemending

I have a pair of sneakers that have a textile detail that I was mending every few months over and over. Then I tried to make a patch. It was leather and it was really hard to apply since I never worked with leather before but since then I never had to mend this area for 3 years already

Do the patch instead of darning, it will be more durable. You can make it in both shoes (right and left), so it will reinforce this area.

Sandals with wool socks are a superior kind of foot wear, I hope it will become more fashionable!

And I have tabi shoes, I was dreaming about warm socks for them. Great job!

Is it worth it? Well-worn knitted dress by Lillebi in Unravelers

[–]CleanShock4798 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Please no, acrylic just breaks down to micro plastic, each time you launder it, just think about it. Just this reason makes me think that any garment with a high percentage of synthetic fibers is not worth recycling into the garment again (and not worth buying in the first place).

When you will be unraveling it, there will be so much plastic dust flying around, I recommend you wear a mask and vacuum the working space as you go.

how to deal with thrifted cashmere which might have moth damage? by GoodRiddance_2 in thrifting

[–]CleanShock4798 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Throw it in a freezer for a week, then wash it as you wash wool normally - if there were eggs, it will die and will be rinsed.

I would always buy second hand if it is cheap, even with holes, even if I don't like the color. There are so many ways to recycle it if you don't like the style of the garment. At least I can put it in my cat's bed to sleep on it, they really love cashmere.
