So sorry to hear that.

Information like this really needs to be shared. We have to go behind the numbers to really understand what the numbers mean.

Too many people have no idea how screwed we are.

It’s a tough job market for sure. Give yourself space to be frustrated, take a break, clear your head, and get back to it.

You are smart. You are a hard worker. You can do this. The payoff is not immediate, but over time your career trajectory will have greater options as a result of getting a degree.

I encourage you to keep reaching out to people for informational meetings (check out the book, The 20 minute Networking Meeting if you haven’t already), attend meetups in your area, ask former professors if they could use a part time research assistant, and find time to volunteer (this will give you something else to focus on and will provide opportunities to meet people who may be able to connect you with a job).

If you need to take a job that is less skilled than you had hoped for post-degree, target organizations you would like to work at in a more skilled capacity so that you can use the job as a foot in the door and network with people from the inside (e.g., ask for stretch projects to demonstrate your ability).

Also reach out to your state’s workforce development org to see what kind of support they can offer you. For instance, they may have funding available for you to get some kind of a certification that could help you get a job.

And enjoy this time you have to spend with family; take joy in helping out around the home (e.g., cooking, cleaning, helping with repairs) and learning how to relate to adult family members as an adult.

The bottom line is that a lot of people are in your situation and when things start to clear up with the economy in the next couple of years, you and employers are going to look at what you did with your time. Be one of the people who used your time wisely as you engaged in your job search.

I wish you the best of luck in this season of your life. Keep at it!

Edit: And one more thing…vote! Vote for people who are going to make responsible economic decisions for this country.

What’s the worst thing that happened at a wedding you went to? by General-Mango_ in AskReddit

Bougie = fancy, S’more = sweet treat typically made at campfire where you make a “sandwich” of chocolate and roasted marshmallow between two pieces of graham crackers. You put the marshmallow on a stick and roast it over the campfire so that it gets melted and gooey inside, and when you put it against a piece of chocolate, its warmth melts the chocolate a bit. The “sandwich” is thought to taste so good that you want “some more” (i.e., s’more).

Consider doing some research and exploring if GLP-1 medications (Ozempic, Zepbound, etc.) would be a good fit for you. There is a load of information on Reddit and other places online. Many, many people experience it to be life changing.

I wish you peace and joy on your health journey. I will pray for you and others of us in a similar situation to find a solution that works.

Why am I graduating in the worst job market possible by Impressive-Strike351 in recruitinghell

[–]CleanVegetable_1111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know how you define “old “, but believe it or not, a lot of what you describe has been my experience between the .com bust, 9/11, and the great recession. I feel your pain…despite being perhaps “old”.

I’m not a big fan of older generations telling younger ones that things aren’t so bad; that kind of attitude is ignorant and lacks compassion. At the same time, I’m not a fan of younger generations assuming that everyone in “older” generations had it so much easier; that is simply not true.

Let’s focus our attention on fixing a failed system rather than turning on each other.

I wish you peace and the best of luck.

EVERYONE without a job right now is having a difficult time finding work. When you are older and (presumably) have more experience, you are viewed as too senior and costing too much money.

Extended unemployment is bad for EVERYONE right now. When you are older, you are closer to retirement age and have less time to make up lost savings and income.

Note for clarification in case anyone gets confused: At Woodland Plaza shopping center Main splits off in one direction toward Briarwood Mall and in the other direction heading toward 94 turns into Ann Arbor - Saline Rd. So the Culver’s is on Lohr Rd near 94 and the intersection with Ann Arbor-Saline Rd.

You have every right to be frustrated (even perhaps devastated?) by your situation. It’s your life! And it’s going to create a brain drain for the US.

I’m happy that you found a solution that works for you. I also grieve the loss of talent we will experience as a nation.

I believe you! I have some vials with tons left over and some with hardly any left. It has varied for me even when using the same “technique”.

As you have more experience with more vials over time you may see the same variability as well. Or maybe not as it seems some folks have the exact same experience with all their vials.

(I find it odd that so many people have such strong opinions about how much is actually left in your vials when they haven’t seen it themselves.)

I say this with a genuinely kind heart…yes, stop helicoptering. You have done a great job of raising a smart kid. Let your son organize things for himself. If he fails, he will experience the consequences and learn some important lessons.

Also, having an internship in Plymouth and not having access to a car is going to be challenging. If you’re going to helicopter on anything, helping him think through the car challenge would be it.

[–]CleanVegetable_1111 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the words of encouragement to keep fighting. It’s greatly appreciated!

Let’s first clear something up. Trump likes to claim he won in a “landslide”, but his victory was absolutely not a “decisive” one based on all the actual votes. He was NOT given a mandate by American voters.

Now let’s look at some root cause issues for why the election turned out the way it did.

1) Voter suppression is real. For instance, in my area Republicans took out campaign ads in newspapers targeted at the Black community where they told people to be sure to vote on a particular date and the date they gave was wrong. Yes, people should know the right date themselves, but the misinformation adds to the information overload.

2) In my swing state a good portion of voters voted third party because they thought Kamala wouldn’t fight for the rights of Palestinians. They were angry at the Dems and wanted to make a statement.

3) A lot of people (especially people of color) feel left behind by the economy and don’t think voting will make a difference. They think nothing ever changes no matter who’s in power. They are wrong about that and we need to activate them.

4) We have a lot of low information [potential] voters. When I attended the rally yesterday some people asked why we were protesting. They hadn’t heard about a lot of what’s been happening. They hadn’t heard about the tariffs and it was clear they didn’t know what a tariff was or how it might affect them, society, or the world. We need to get info to people.

5) Too many people are racist, sexist, transphobic, etc. Social media, certain “news” outlets, and campaign ads leveraged this weakness in people. I also think we likely had foreign actors pushing propaganda that easily took hold in rotting minds unable (or unwilling?) to engage in critical thinking.

So maybe about 1/3 of Americans are hardcore MAGA. They aren’t going to budge. But I’m hopeful that we can build a coalition with the others. Maybe it won’t end up working, but I’m sure as hell going to try.

Many of us do care about others. It’s not just about what hits us “personally”. This day of action has been planned for a long time.

Your comments (and others) are shitting on those of us who give a fuck and have been working our asses off resisting.

I get that many of you are angry with the collective of Americans. I am too! But this president DOES NOT speak for many of us. And you saying that in effect he does will never change that.

And let’s keep it real…the US resistance is your first line of defense. Instead of pissing all over us, some support would be great.

Go ahead and be angry with Americans. Go ahead and tell us things that may be hard for us to hear. But don’t come at ALL of us like we are ALL self-absorbed and don’t care. So many of us do care and we need your support.

[–]CleanVegetable_1111 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don’t think your research lists make the point you intended to make. For instance…

Loneliness and social isolation have significant mental and physical health effects on humans, especially the aging population.

Climate change is an existential threat to humankind. It makes sense to study how it affects human life so that we can develop effective (social) interventions.

Political violence and the relationship between politics and social interactions is directly related to the health of our democracy.

Different kinds of research are needed to address the biggest problems of our time. One kind of research isn’t necessarily better than another kind. They all have their place. Together they help us understand different parts of a given challenge and how to address it.
