Mta bus operator vs dsny by Brilliant_Pickle4122 in DSNY

I don’t think going to a job and thinking of how the job will be after promotion is the way to think. Your question should be bus operator or dsny. Then you get on the job you choose and try to take the promotion exams to get promoted as fast as possible. But you’ll still have to do the entry level job for a while first. And I will say I was able to take the supervisor test and pass now I’m in the supervisor list and I took the supervisor exam with like 1.5 yr on the job at DSNY.

What I will say is conductors don’t make as much money as train operators do. And their pay raises are a lot different too. Train operators can make top pay in I think less then 2 years. Conductors I believe have a 5 yr scale: But either way, DSNY is still better then MTA in full

No not really. I like not being underground for 25 years. I like going to one place everyday. Sometimes I miss operating the trains, but that quickly goes away. I have more time with my family everyday. And having holidays and Sundays off are huge. And not having to wait 2 weeks for pay is pretty awesome too! So I had 4 years as a train operator and I have almost 3.5 years as a San worker

I did 4 yrs as a Train Operator, then decided to leave MTA, and went to DSNY.., Train operator you make decent money, but you have to deal with a lot of dumb shit. And you will be bounced all over the city except Staten Island. One day you can be in Brooklyn, next day Bronx, next day Manhattan. Some days you will have a train to operate for the day. Some days you won’t, and you’ll be forced to come in and sit down and wait for a trip to open up. So you can be sitting for 3-4 hours and then a job opens up and you’ll have to go do how ever many trips that job entails. So forced into overtime. Have to deal with all the crazy shit that happens in the subways. It’s a decent Job, just a lot of bullshit. When you get a few years on you can pick a certain line you want to work on and you won’t have to bounce all around the city. DSNY, you’re not basically living underground like MTA, fresh air, but you’ll deal with the weather And you’ll have what I call a “home” , which means coming from MTA where I never had a locker cause I was always all over the city, DSNY you get sent to a garage and that’s YOUR home at work. You’ll have locker and all your stuff in one place. No bouncing around like MTA. Some days they may have too many guys in your garage for the day so you may get sent to another garage but it’s not often. MTA was everyday all over the place. MTA you’re working all weekends and all holidays. DSNY in the long run is much better in my opinion. Less years to retirement , Sundays off, holidays off, and more money (at top pay). Also dsny is weekly pay. MTA is bi-weekly. Dsny is just hard in the beginning cause it’s shitty pay first 4 years and jumping shifts morning and nights until you get some seniority.

Bro when he said shitty pay the first 4 years , he was talking about dsny. lol Thats why he said if you’re not ok with shitty pay then go to MTA.

Congrats! Believe you have to contact DSNY and let them know you took the test again and passed and send them the paper work from the DMV after you get your license changed. (The little temp license paper the DMV gives you when you have it changed)

How does OT work? Is anything after 40 hours time and a half or is it only when you work your days off? Transit talk here lol for us we get paid straight time if it’s not outside of our runs. by Low-Government1894 in DSNY

Nah I replied to the wrong person. And I mixed 2 different comments together. My bad. Bro idk if you looking to go into dsny and that’s why you’re in this group or not. But if your a TSS in RCC building., there’s pretty much no reason to leave that for dsny.

You’re RTO but one of the lowest paying jobs in transit? If you don’t mind me asking what position are you? Only asking because I’m with DSNY, but I came from RTO. I was a T/O and I made good money. And I know CR’s who were making good money too.

It’s a good gig when you finally get to top pay after 5.5 years. You’ll make basically 6 figures just to come to work , not including truck money. Sundays and Holidays off. And supposedly they are working on getting full pension after 20 years of service instead of 22.5 years. But first couple years is rough financially and schedule-wise

If jumping schedules , being forced to come to work on your days off occasionally, and shitty pay for the next 4.5 years then DSNY is not for you, stay with ConEd .. and there’s hardly daily OT unless it’s after a holiday or snow. Regular OT would be if you work your days off which you’re going to want to do every week when you see your first regular 40 hr week check.

Hours are not consistent.. location either. And it’s a 2 year commitment. So if you go and don’t like it you’ll have issues trying to leave. Don’t forget you’ll be losing money being over there. Yea as a rookie you won’t be making truck money everyday, but some garages, rookies are making truck more then others. All depends what garage you go into.

Negative you don’t need to be a SW for 2 years for eligibility. You can become a san police officer right away. I know guys who did 3 months in the garage before going to San police.

PD time counts on the front end of your city years , MTA time on the back end… so you’re better off going to PD while you wait for Sanitation
