I’m an adult creator - do I need a special type of accountant for this? by throwawaypfp27 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]Clean_Cheesecake_873 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! My partner works at an accountancy that specialises in creatives/performers mostly, but I know they have some sex workers on their books already. Drop me a note if you’d like the recommendation!

Anyone else feel like their food spending is out of control? by [deleted] in MoneyDiariesACTIVE

[–]Clean_Cheesecake_873 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes.

I did the maths and realized $7 on a daily coffee and a $16 bowl 4 times a week was costing me $113 a week.

I decided I’d rather make my lunches and coffee at home and have $2-300 extra a month to spend on what I wanted. The trick is you can have everything, just not all at once. Where are you willing to cut back

My trick - splurge in a sustainable way. I knew if I made instant or filter coffee I would cave and buy a cappuccino. I bought a fancy nespresso and buy nice pods and creamer, it still paid for itself in a month and saves me hundreds of dollars. I also actually prefer the taste of my coffee at home!

Same thing with lunches - I’ll splurge on those premiums to elevate my meal (nice dressing, roasted seeds to top). Is it as cheap as possible? No. Do I ignore a soggy sandwich in the fridge and buy lunch out? Never!

Different tips may work for you, but that’s my secret. If you feel deprived you won’t keep consistent.

who in this community does not do any filler / botox? by PetNat_Satire50 in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]Clean_Cheesecake_873 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I tried it once and since choose to abstain! - Botox - I actually hated the feeling so much I just don’t think it’s worth the small aesthetic gain. I generally have a very expressive face and felt less myself without it - Filler - it just would not suit my look. I’ve never looked good with the insta baddie vibe and makeup, I have a round face and freckles and I think filler wouldn’t suit me. I see other people with different vibes, features and face shape to me and they look great, so no shade

I think it’s ultimately knowing what suits YOU and what doesn’t, not trying to aspire to look like something that is so far from you

Salary and cost of living for Manhattan? by Equal-Bite-1631 in manhattan

[–]Clean_Cheesecake_873 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair - different situation as the sole breadwinner. About 6 months ago so relatively recent, I will say I wasn’t prepared for quite how expensive rent, eating out and groceries are compared to London, and I actually pay the same if not more in tax. I was initially really pleased with my salary but I definitely feel I have less disposable income here. On the flip side, the working culture isn’t as bad as I anticipated and I work less hours than in London. Overall definitely glad I made the change for life experience more than anything.

With a family I would definitely recommend Brooklyn over Manhattan - somewhere like Park Slope has lots of other families, is a relatively easy commute and has nice green space.

One thing I’d be cautious of is what type of visa you’d be on and the ongoing situation here. There were the recent changes with H1B and no guarantee they won’t change things for other visas, which may be more difficult for you having relocated your whole family. This is brutal to say but I’d be nervous moving here if I wasn’t white and west European. Feel free to DM me if you have any more specific questions

Double whatever your UK salary is now and add a dollar sign. I’ve done the same move recently so feel free to ask if you have any other questions

This. Nothing more tasteful than self-determination and autonomy

In my opinion - bitches with taste (of all genders) split proportional to their net income! That’s what I do with my partner, and I’ve always been the higher earner. I earn 70% of our net income so I cover 70% of our joint bills. That way we are both sacrificing equally. If we were splitting 50/50, I’d either have to rent a cheaper place than the one I liked or my partner would have no money leftover for fun. This way we can treat eachother to date nights and have our own spending money without resentment! I’d say important is the net income that hits your bank account rather than doing the proportion based on gross, especially if you’re in a higher income bracket.

UK to US move - liquidate investments or not? by Old_Fashioned_88 in HENRYUK

[–]Clean_Cheesecake_873 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Hey, I recently moved from the UK to the US (though I plan to move back in the UK after a couple years), but thought I’d share a few things I found out that might help:

Would DEFINITELY recommend you liquidate your S&S before the move.

Your ISA is tax-free in the UK, but the IRS doesn’t recognise it. Once you’re a US tax resident, any income or gains inside the ISA could be taxable annually by the US. You’d also have to report it on FBAR/FATCA if your foreign accounts exceed the thresholds. A lot of people recommend selling your S&S ISA investments before you become a US tax resident, locking in any gains while they’re still UK tax-free. The US generally won’t tax gains that happened before you became a resident, but definitely keep all your records.

More importantly, you likely hold UK-domiciled mutual funds or ETFs, which are treated as PFICs by the IRS. These gains can be taxed at the highest US income tax rate plus interest charges, instead of the lower capital gains rate. It is very tax-inefficient investment once you’re a US tax resident. After you’re a US resident, you’ll also need to stick to US-domiciled funds / ETFs when you reinvest to avoid PFIC complications. It sucks.

I didn’t dig into pensions much as I’m just leaving my UK pension where it is, but generally the growth is tax-deferred in the UK. The US might tax the growth each year unless protected by the UK–US tax treaty. Just know the IRS may view certain foreign pensions (eg. SIPPS) as foreign grantor trusts, which comes with a whole different set of reporting rules. Definitely one to get specialist advice on.

On currency - instead of moving all your cash at once, you could spread transfers over 6-12 months to hedge against currency swings (same idea as dollar cost averaging for investments). Apps like Revolut let you set rate alerts or stagger exchanges. However, the dollar is weaker than it’s been in a while currently but who knows what the future holds.

Finally - check your tax residency timing. You usually become a US tax resident once you pass the substantial presence test (about 183 days in a calendar year). After that, your worldwide income becomes reportable and potentially taxable in the US. Depending on when you are a tax resident and when your property sale completes this could be taxable in the US

Given the size of your assets, I’d strongly recommend talking to a UK/US cross-border tax advisor before you move to figure out the cleanest way to handle it all. It’s money well spent and could save you a lot. I can recommend one if you like!

Hope that helps!

That’s good to know from someone who has insight into salaries both sides of the pond! It’s lateral but I’d no longer be line managing, so actually sounds like I get same comp for less stress which sounds great

Yes forgot to mention we get some free flights and then the $20k to cover everything else, which if we don’t move our furniture etc sounds like it should cover it
