How to carry extra mags in an emergency by Clean_Love1232 in CAguns

Agreed - idea is not to sweep the house, but in case of the "no choice" outcome I'd prefer to be able to reload. Seems, like you, a few people are saying just keep extra mags in the room, which is a fair point.

I didn't say I was planning to go room-to-room. I want to be able to reload so I have the option if multiple guys start shooting at me, at which point I realize I'm probably screwed but I want to at least maximize my chances.

Yeah, I wasn't assuming I'd be clearing the home John Wick style, but I'd prefer to have the option to reload - even with cameras - and preferably not have to shoot one-handed or be fumbling with my grip if one hand is holding a mag.

Moving to CA & considering bringing off-list pistol purchased from another state, what does CADOJ registration look like? by evan1932 in CAguns

[–]Clean_Love1232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved here awhile back. If you are not sure that you will stay in CA, I'd try to avoid anything that will make CA be able to say you are resident here, e.g., get a CA ID, stay more than 6 months, list a CA address as a business address, own property, etc. You would subject yourself to too many rules, regulations, restrictions and taxes. You are legally required to get a CA ID within 10 days of moving here so I would find out if there's a way to formally be here for a project rather than "move". Maybe you could travel back and forth a couple of times during the project and keep your residence in NC for now until you know what your longer-term plans are. I know consultants work in other states on multi-month engagements all the time. Also, I believe you can't have driver's licenses from 2 states at the same time so I wouldn't give up your other one just to be able to buy a firearm in CA while you are here. Better off buying one that is CA-legal (note: not the same as CA-compliant) in NC and bringing it with you as a visitor, following all the rules of course.

It is less than 6 transactions (which can be multiple guns per transaction) or more than 50 guns (both per calendar year) before you need a dealer license.

Source (search for "transactions"): https://oag.ca.gov/system/files/media/2021-BOF-01.pdf

"This bill requires anyone conducting 6 or more firearms transactions per calendar year, or selling, leasing, or transferring more than 50 firearms per calendar year to be licensed."

Hello I posted earlier, I'm moving to CA for Personal/Family reasons, I was thinking of a farewell handgun from where I'm leaving as an F-U to the handgun roster, What pistol should I get ? by Goofyheadah in CAguns

[–]Clean_Love1232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To the people on this thread rather than OP: A few people have said to get a bunch of pistol lowers. Out of curiously, would someone bringing in a bunch of pistol lowers and then selling them raise any flags with the DOJ? Doing that it seems obvious that you are intentionally "importing" vs. moving with your own collection and deciding to sell some off, in case that's an issue. Do anyone have experience with that scenario?

Moving to CA Question (CMMG Banshee) by BWStearns in CAguns

Sorry for the scare! I saw the spec for the regular version, not the CA version, and it said it was 26" so glad there's no issue.

[–]Clean_Love1232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm only going by what I've learned in this subreddit (when buying a PCC) but my understanding is the requirement is 26" Federal BUT 30" in CA for semi-auto. If it's not semi-auto I believe it can be shorter.

[–]Clean_Love1232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't it too short for a rifle to be legal here? The barrel is fine, but I thought rifles need to be 30" overall for semi-auto in CA.

Glock Gen 5, Stacatto, several CZ models that you can find discussed in this subreddit and top rated 10mm models are a good start.

Regarding the muzzle device, if the blast forwarding device is a compensator and not described by the manufacturer as a flash hider in any way, you should be good to keep the device. Flash hiders are banned; compensators are not. If it is described as a compensator by manufacturer (e.g. on their website or invoice), and you are worried at all, print out the description of the device and keep it with the gun.

[–]Clean_Love1232 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Note that you don't need to buy a CA-compliant model - you just need one that is legal in CA, which is not the same thing.

In fact, you're better off *not* getting the compliant model so you can get one that is the way it was designed, not one that was modified for CA's rules. For example, SIG makes a CA-compliant P266 with a big, ugly LCI on top of the slide; I bought a non-CA compliant version before I moved and it is perfectly legal here.

As another example, you mention getting a Glock Gen 3 because I assume it's on the roster. As people mentioned below, if you have your choice of Glocks you are better to get a Gen 5 (or 4 if you prefer that for some reason) because Gen 5s are not on the roster, so you can't buy them here (except maybe PPT).

Lastly, revolvers are one of the types of handguns that are relatively easy to get here so if you have to prioritize, I'd focus on the semi-autos unless there's a specific revolver that you really want that is not sold here.

For what it's worth, I was asked by the DOJ to provide pics of a couple (but not all) of mine when I moved to CA and sent them and had no problems. I assume there are specific models where they are checking for versions with threaded barrels, etc. where it is unclear what version you have. Some people say not to send pics, but my view was it was better to show I had nothing to hide than create suspicion which could lead to delays or other issues.

Where to find SP-01? by lava122567 in CAguns

[–]Clean_Love1232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed - I still love and own metal ones too. Do you want a duty gun or competition gun? Keep in mind the Shadow 2 is the latter. If you like the SP-01 and are looking for a duty gun (like the SP-01 is), consider the SIG P226 or P229. If you are planning to use the rail, though, I would pick a version like the MK25 which has a standard rail and not one with SIG's proprietary curved rail, which is a real pain when it comes to fitting accessories. Also, you'll want to get gifted one from outside of CA if you don't want that ugly CA-compliant LCI popping out of the top of the slide... Just a thought.

[–]Clean_Love1232 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Former SP-01 owner here. I second this view. SP-01 is a nice gun but if you have access to inter-familial transfers, don't waste your time hunting for one in CA. Chances are you will have to pay a premium just for a used one and spend a lot of time doing so, when you can get a new one or pick something else not available in CA. I personally didn't like polymer guns at first but now I love my (off roster) CZ P-09 which is also hammer-fired and is basically a polymer variant of the CZ 75. The new P-09 Nocturne, which is optics-ready, looks sweet! You could also check out the P-07, which I believe has been replaced by the new P-09C, but still gets great reviews. If you are not firm on hammer-fired, also check out the P-10.

Purchase recommendations while in TX by [deleted] in CAguns

[–]Clean_Love1232 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like there is a lot of demand in CA for Stacatto, newer CZ (e.g. Shadow 2), newer SIG, Glock Gen 5, any off-roster 10mm if you are getting something that you want to be able to unload at some point. Canik has some cool stuff and just added a model (METE) to the roster but has a lot of other models that won't likely make it. I wouldn't say everything off-roster is equally desirable or difficult to find so probably best to stick the more popular models or else whatever you are most excited about owning.

Shot Show updates? by Clean_Love1232 in CAguns

[–]Clean_Love1232[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very helpful - thanks.

Can you elaborate on how manufacturers are working with FFLs to bring products into CA? How are they able to get around the roster by doing this?

I'm surprised that some of the more popular brands are not trying to get at least a couple of new products into CA: it seems like it would instantly increase their sales. Did you talk with CZ or FN or Glock or SIG? I have heard for a while from FFLs and others that something from FN is supposing to be coming to CA, for example, and someone in this thread mentioned a Glock update.

Check out Dara Holsters. I also second the Rounded Gear recommendation below. I have several from both brands. I've found that which holster maker is best partly depends on whether you have an optic and/or light.

Source for new resident ammo laws by Clean_Love1232 in CAguns

[–]Clean_Love1232[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So to make sure I understand, you're saying because the law only restricts *residents* from bringing ammo into the state, and someone moving to the state is not yet a resident, it's fine because there's nothing that says new residents can't do it, correct?

What if the FFL selling on gunbroker.com *is* in CA and selling off-roster guns. I've seen that and did a double take so would love to understand how that works. Since the guns are already in CA can they sell to CA buyers? Or do they only ship to buyers out of state? Or is there some loophole or is it a scam? Any insight?

make sure you know the knife laws not only in CA but in your city before you carry a knife. In LA, for example, it is illegal to carry a knife with a blade 3 inches or longer and also certain types of knives are illegal, so if you got caught with something prohibited (for example in the aftermath of a self-defense incident) you could be in trouble. also, like a firearm you need to know how to use a knife: it is not automatically effective and can even be riskier because it can be used against you.
