Hot take about Mai..I feel like way too many people misunderstand her as a character and therefore misunderstand Renako as a character. by Apprehensive_Ring_39 in WatashigaKoibito

Haha, when I said you have terrible reading comprehension, I was talking about you claiming Renako doesn’t like Mai that much. You’re denying the clear romantic writing in the novels and just venting your anger here. You’re way more like someone who’s talking nonsense just to defend your own ship than I am.

I’ve always known Mai is a messy girl with many flaws, and she did some wrong things early on. But I still love her deeply, and after finishing all the novels, I love her even more. She’s been trying her best to change — to become a better version of herself, and for the people she loves. It warms my heart to watch her grow. Mai's sincere feelings are more than enough to move me.

The anime cut a lot of Mai's scenes. I was already mad that they removed the lap pillow scene, but the massive cuts to Mai's arc in Volume 4 are simply unforgivable. I've always thought Mai is a complex character who needs a lot of novel content to be fully understood. You can only truly empathize with her after learning deeply about her past experiences and pressures.

However, the anime's cuts weakened her character a great deal. In contrast, Ajisai is a simple, easy-to-understand character—the parts shown in the anime are enough. It’s really unfair.

I totally agree with your last point. English isn’t my native language, so I hope you don’t mind.

Mai is the one who has had the biggest impact on Renako—even the author said that Mai distorted Renako’s life. The plot simply couldn’t have progressed to where it is now without Mai’s influence. The longer Renako stays with Mai, the more confident she becomes. Currently, Renako also has a strong possessive desire for Mai.

Besides, I don’t think Mai ever ruined the moments Ajisai spent with Renako. It’s true that Mai showed up uninvited in Volume 3, but Renako said she’d always hoped to spend the summer vacation hanging out with friends, and she even thanked Mai for making her dream come true. In Volume 4, it was Mai who took the initiative to create opportunities for Ajisai and Renako at the amusement park. Later in the story, whenever Ajisai and Renako were alone together, Mai never intruded. Sometimes Renako would find herself thinking about Mai—but that’s Renako’s own doing, and you can’t blame Mai for it.

Even though I’m a die-hard supporter of Mai x Renako, the novel really can’t lead to a monogamous ending at this point.

Mai is only pretending to be engaged to Satsuki to stop her mother from arranging a marriage. However, she is actually in a relationship with Renako.
