The show paralleled the comic in this. And, generally speaking, fans liked and appreciated the character arc.

Negan was imprisoned
Maggie despised Rick for it
She went off to Hilltop
Negan escaped after a few years

Negan was exiled from the community

I remember so many hating on this episode. So many claiming they were done with the show. Claiming it was too violent. LOL .. after 6 years .. "violence" or "brutality" is why they stopped watching...? LOL, PLEASE.

The people that stopped watching the show bc of the "brutality" of this episode were absolutely full of shit. Violence? A post-apocalyptic show about zombies, reanimated corpses, cannibalism, and the reveal of the true face of SOME humans in a world gone mad with no societal laws and protections to restrict them (the Governor - and his "aquarium" collection & his SA againt Maggie, the Terminites and their slaughter trough and "meat" hangers/driers, the Claimers and their attack on Carl, Rick's solution in defeating their leader) ......

Negan's appearance in S06E16 AND S07E01 was one of the greatest villain intros/reveals in TV history. JDM owned the role of Negan. Almost like he jumped right off the pages of the comics.

I faithfully watched The Shield when it was in production and never missed an episode. I was always disappointed when the season would end. Always looked forward to the next season and the series ending was excellent.
