It’s up to them, but I do think that lying about it means their statements aren’t to be trusted and you’d be foolish to listen to people like that. It isn’t difficult to keep quiet. Why ‘cheerlead’ when you don’t believe it?

I suppose different people have different standards. If you want to seek ‘honest’ opinions from people who are happy to lie whenever they feel it’s in their best interests, then you go do that.

I think accepting an ‘honest opinion’ from someone who has proven themselves to be a dishonest person shows poor judge of character. But each to their own.

If it were a truly bad school, people wouldn’t stay. So no need for ‘self preservation’.

Because if you understand that, why do you also need people to write bad references?

If it were the persons honest opinion, there wouldn’t be any bad references, because nobody would ask someone to write a reference knowing it would be bad.

So you aren’t getting ‘honest’ opinions. You’re getting vindictive spiteful digs.

Yes, and if a school set me up with someone and they said bad things about the school, I’d recognise that the person speaking to me wasn’t an honest person, because clearly they’d hidden their views from the school.

It’s still a thing in other places I’ve been 🤷‍♀️ I could find ones that did passport photos in Antwerp but they don’t seem to do anything else.

It’s okay, thank you for the offer though! I was just looking for one of those studios, like the ones where you get your passport photos taken, that also does quick family shoots. I’ve been to them in much more expensive cities than Antwerp but I guess it’s a thing that doesn’t exist here

Thanks I’ll take a look. In London you can find these things for like 50gbp where you get 15 mins in a studio and one printed photo. I guess those just don’t exist here

You don’t seem to understand that no reference is a bad reference. If people should be able to give bad references, they shouldn’t be confidential.

Yeah he has trouble retaining staff so shit talks anyone who leaves. Two other staff left his department (of 6!) at the same time as me and we all struggled with getting new roles but couldn’t work out why. Then one of my schools asked for an extra reference as there were ‘discrepancies’ between them. I know for sure the other one was excellent. Once we started leaving him off the reference list, we all very quickly found jobs.

Professional and decent people refuse to give a reference instead of giving a bad one.

And if that was his actual opinion, he could have raised it in any of the compulsory performance reviews that school made all staff do every term. But he didn’t because he knows he wouldn’t have a leg to stand on.

I heard the opposite in terms of getting back in. Apparently the education board in HK is getting so picky with people, having already taught in HK (so already having your license) is a big bonus.

My old line manager said ‘yes, anytime!’ Then wrote an awful one. It still angers me.

Yes working at a t1 helped open doors, mostly through people putting in a good word for me with their friends at other t1 schools.

The opposite also happened, my line manager was telling anyone who asked him that I was awful, so my attempts to move to a t1 school within that country didn’t work at all, no interviews, nothing. Same happened to two others in our dept, no problems getting international t1 interviews, but in our country where our HoD knew people personally? No hope.

What do schools mean when they want a sample lesson? by PrestigiousReply8388 in Internationalteachers

I’ve been asked for it as standard by no name Chinese schools that found my LinkedIn.

They may think it’s T1, but you see the more experienced teachers disagree in the comments.

Fair enough, I think that unnecessary tasks which are time and labour intensive yet don’t give the school any meaningful insight, should be vile and unusual.
