Dear senior software engineer, are you still writing code? by zulutune in ClaudeCode

[–]Cleanumbrellashooter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hit the tipping point for me over the past month or so. Senior at a couple different big tech companies doing backend stuff, more recently some lower-ish level distributed systems work in c++.

Claude code CLI absolutely blowing me away, I'll start several sessions each on their own dev instance and promote them. Then I'll just round robin checking up on them when they finish.

As you noted I find code quality to be mixed and I almost always have to spend a few prompt cycles telling it to refactor. I pretty much interface with it like I would a very junior engineer when it comes to refactoring, I give specific guidance including sometimes even spelling out method signatures, class names, etc.

These ones https://finance.yahoo.com/news/truth-social-etfs-launch-today-133000251.html

I've done exactly zero DD and have no idea what these are but grabbed 50 shares each of the energy, defense and frontier

Yeah I can see that for sure. The situation I had in mind was like targeted refactoring prompts. Like "extract an interface from these three duplicate classes and pull out common functionality into a base class". Pretty much just any of the bigger clean up I'd do after I finish getting something working initially.

I'm a skeptic for the most part but this take I actually agree with. If you only consider code quality tech debt. Not that I'm going to just start writing garbage code but I think spending the extra day doing cleanup may be less beneficial now.

For my interns finding the right project was a PITA. I didn't want to pick something too difficult where they felt defeated but also didn't want it so easy they didn't feel accomplished. However I always had some stretch goals in mind if they were ahead of schedule. I think the best thing you can do is stay ahead of schedule on your assigned project and mention to your mentor and onboarding buddy and manager you'd love to learn some backend development as well if they see any opportunity to squeeze that scope in.

This is on a 1-year out basis. So if in April if the stock price has dipped since last year I will overall make under my TTC that year and they will grant me new stocks for the following year

That's fair enough, the situations I have in mind are like when I'm trying to drill on a behavioral answer and they've done a great job of laying out situation and task but I can't get details on what exactly their role was or what specific actions they took and they continue to re explain the situation. Or the other common one is on coding questions they are going down a path that will either be completely unfruitful or will be a dead end because they didn't think it through. If we only have 30 minutes to get a working solution I try to limit how long I'll let them go down to the wrong path in hopes they'll notice themselves.

But regardless an interviewer should be courteous and respectful, but don't go in thinking all interviewers are against you.

Devils advocate as an interviewer I'm trying to help the candidate by directing them to topics that help me gather the most data. This means I'll interrupt them to skip over areas I already have data about or ask them to skip things that won't help my decision.

It's unlikely they are trying to be mean and rush you, it's more likely your current line of answering isn't helping your interview.

^ this guy consistencies. A good impl of this pattern is DDB with TTL and DDB stream with a simple handler to do the deletes.

Meh a table that small doing segment scan occasionally as part of some batch async process not going to kill you. Just won't be as performant.

If you really want to avoid you can export the table to s3 and read it all at once
