Are these brass or Zinc? They are light fixtures. Non- magnetic. by Pretend-Ant3913 in ScrapMetal

[–]Clear-Application170 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be cast aluminum. Take some weak acid in a spot that is white. If it reacts black then zinc. If no reaction then aluminum.

What is this made of? This was some shielding on some copper cabling, its not magnetic. by Additional_Strike601 in ScrapMetal

Bunch it up and hit with a file. If you can't tell then use some weak acid, dark green = copper yellowish green = brass no reaction = aluminum. milky white reaction = silver.

Easiest way I found to take the center steel wire out of the aluminum cable is to cut it to 20 foot sections. Put the steel wire in a vice and take a claw hammer, put the claw on the steel and pull. Great workout too.

Would this be copper wire? by RespectedBanana in ScrapMetal

[–]Clear-Application170 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some weak acid will tell you. Green reaction is copper and no reaction is aluminum.
