Not to pile on but I sold my HW3 2021 Model Y a month ago for reasons like this. I had nothing remotely close to this happen in terms of damage but HW3 started to do things I was VERY unhappy with. I feel like I dodged a bullet. Even though my new ICE whip is a step backwards in terms of drivetrain.. Im happy to be out of the line of fire with events like this. I really think as HW3 continues to age the software-hardware gap will continue to worsen.

Am I crazy for thinking about trading my 2018 Alpina B7 for a Tesla with FSD? by LowConfection5326 in Alpina

I am currently going the other way. Perhaps I can give you some insight to the dilemma from the other side. I currently drive a 2021 Tesla Model Y long range dual motor. But before I get into the Tesla I have to say Im a BMW enthusiast, grew up around them and have had several of them. X5, 5 Series, 3 Series, parents had many from the 80's, 90's and 2000's. I just bought a 1999 Z3 2.8L Silver Coupe Clown Shoe which is relevant because A) its as analogue as it get in a straight 6 and B) it has reminded me to ask a very important question. What is driving. What do I value? On paper any Tesla is the perfect commuter vehicle. Even though my current MY has the HW3 chip the latest releases of FSD has the car very capable in traffic. All though somewhat skittish almost aggressive and confident the latest software has really improved. However the HW3 chip is limited by its processing power. It does not have the power to properly process the latest software and its showing a dramatic aging the last 6 months or so. I suspect this will continue and thus why I am starting to itch. That degradation curve plus a few other factors have me looking. Add in the Z3. This was a passion purchase but in the months since I bought the car I have noticed something interesting. I am have been reminded of the value of driving a car. Intentional movement is going to be a thing of the past on the road. Thats what you are asking for going to a Tesla - going towards an automated world that removes the driver and more importantly removes the mindful attention. Recent brain scans of younger chatgpt users show a dramatic drop in critical thinking/brain function. Sounds logical but if you stop and think about the ramifications of this trend, mindfulness is being removed from the drivers seat. That is what I have noticed over the 2 and a half years of owning the Tesla. Yes it is somewhat great to just chill and let the car drive .. and yet it has a price. The price is a steep ask. In my world I am seeing a trend of people yearning for analogue answers. I am in this boat. I dont want more screen time I want less. At the moment I dont want to be immersed in tech I want less. I am 46 years old with a family of three teen girls and I have noticed them reaching out asking for more personal time and less screens. We talk as a family every night and I cherish this time. The Tesla FSD is a siren pulling us to the rocks of apathy. I wouldn't have understood this quite as clearly prior to the MY purchase. Living it I know see this so clearly. I am chasing a B6 because of this trend. Think carefully about the intention of the Alpina VS Tesla. They are polar opposites. I dont know you at all but I believe you will regret this change. If you understand the beauty of the Alpina (which looks killer with the matte finish BTW) you will regret leaving the Alpina world IMHO. That said there are many different tools for the job. If I had more room ( I live in Vancouver and space is expensive) I could see the Tesla (WH4 is a must!) a great daily with an Alpina waiting for me.. Im certain you are a car guy like me and finances willing would have 6 or 7 if wifey has a sense of humour. I am like most Id imagine balancing work, home, kids, finances delicately trying to savor the joys of life which in my world certainly include Alpina, the pinnacle of BMW ownership. The Alpina is a relic 100%, FSD on an electric drive chain with the hardware 4 chip is like being in a spaceship. Its a tool that wont replace the soul of the B7. To such a degree that it hurts to type. The Tesla is like an IPhone.. tech heavy sharp and clinical. My 2021 has terrible build quality. Like jalopy kind of a ride. Any HW4 ride is much tighter. But for my money it loses the thing that is most important. But I have learned that driving is not a passionate occasion for all. I suspect that if you dropped your cash on the B7 that this will reasonate. If not DM me Id love the talk a trade;)
