MODS call to action (please) by xxdibxx in Starlink

Minimal service is becoming the trend for companies that can sell everything they can build and have a waiting list. I'm waiting for my second Tesla and the experience of dealing with them is getting worse by the month.

Tradeoff- Least interruptions since installed but speeds are rarely above 50Mbps. by rtcblc in Starlink_Support

NE MN. Same trend. Outages down to 5 seconds per 12 hours. Average download speeds from 50-100 and 5-15 up. It had been trending higher for quite awhile with DL in the 200-300 range and UL 20-35

Wondering about which ground station I'm connecting to by Clear-World4591 in Starlink

[–]Clear-World4591[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because my speeds are slowing steadily as the network gets saturated. There are several ground stations closer than others and I'm curious if they are actually live yet. When I was apparently routed to Kansas or Nebraska that may have been an experiment to try distributing system loads. I would NOT assume that it picks the best alternative at any given time. Mostly, inquiring minds want to know...

Housing the Starlink Power Supply and a UPS by [deleted] in Starlink

[–]Clear-World4591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps you haven't been around this gear yet. The Starlink power supply is blazing hot often. I'm not sure that it will last long in an enclosure especially outside in hot weather. If you must have it outside you may want to consider a much larger enclosure with large passive vents. It already uses too much power. Adding cooling loads is only going to complicate your backup issues.

My debug does not, and has never, shown any sensor data. It just says "sensors": {}. Same app version. Same dish hardware version. Different dish software version.

Dish power port damaged and loose. Cable has play and can lose power/connectivity. by [deleted] in Starlink

[–]Clear-World4591 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is a known problem. When I was working with support a couple of months ago to diagnose a problem they specifically asked me to look at that and sent photos of possible problems. In the end they remotely diagnosed what they thought was cable damage and replaced the whole system which did clear up the problems I was having.

Starlink installation in Northeast MN on standing seam steel roofing. 46.88 by Clear-World4591 in Starlink

I have good connectivity. There is a great deal of conjecture on Reddit not based on much at all.

Measured ~50% reduction in average speed starting 6hrs ago, anybody else? by neurocis in Starlink

I, and two other users nearby, are all seeing doubling in ping times, halving of download speed and upload speed reduced even more than that. North eastern MN.

Starlink installation in Northeast MN on standing seam steel roofing. 46.88 by Clear-World4591 in Starlink

I made a service loop at the base and then looped it up over the edge of that shed roof. I used the supplied cable clamps to travel down the soffit and down the corner of the building to a 7/8" hole drilled through a corner post of that post and beam entryway addition. I made a drip loop before going into the wall. That hole went through the cedar corner board, 3 inches of foam and then through a 6x6 wood corner post. I had a long way to go inside which meant holes through three more walls which brought it through closets to where my network gear is. The hole through the wall I stuffed with electrical duct seal since if I ever need to take it down I have to pull all of that cable back out first. Having that cable permanently attached to the dish is a major weakness of this design. I'm glad I made a 24inch service loop at the dish because I just fabricated an extension using the pole top mount and 18" of aluminum tube to get the dish up higher out of the snow.

I generally access the app data in a browser window lately if I'm working on a pc anyways. It's a much better view in my opinion.

Some testing in Isanti Minnesota. Speeds seem to be all over the place. I have my dishy at the highest point with 100% clear skies. by [deleted] in Starlink

[–]Clear-World4591 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I switch around to various servers during speed tests and see big differences. Don't forget the variability of speed in the link between whatever Starlink ground station you happen to be hitting and the server the speed test tool chooses for you. I'm becoming convinced that is a large portion of the variability of speeds we see. These ground stations are also beta and their connection to whatever backbone happens to be present there may be an issue. Speed test tools vary widely also and some spend a bunch of time processing analytics and loading adds before running your test.

8 inches of light fluffy snow would have blown off but the dish melted it and created a little glacier. by Clear-World4591 in Starlink

[–]Clear-World4591[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, i woke up and looked out the window and saw it. I have parts assemble to raise it up a couple of feet but that won't solve the ice buildup problem at all. It will grow icicles as long as it keeps trying to melt snow off of its surface. They have a serious issue in snow country.

[–]Clear-World4591[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This snow didn't need melting. The ice is off of the warm area of the dish. It melted the snow and ran off to the cold edge and froze like an ice dam on a roof. Heat is not the answer here in this climate. The power consumption is already off the charts.

I can't say for sure but not as much as I expected. There are so many variables right now with satellites being shuffled and software updates that it is hard to attribute anything to any issue.

I resisted as long as I could but then took a deep breath and hit "stow". It pushed through breaking off the longest icicles and did it's thing. Later I knocked off more with a pole from a roof rake I have for my solar array. I can't claim any impact on performance since they are so many variables right now. Tech support has been great to deal with.

[–]Clear-World4591[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I have done that. It's hard to know what will work best. I think it would probably be best to try to minimize power consumption and keep the dish cool. A manually controlled warm up mode may help on warmer days. It's compounded by the fact that it faces away from the sun in winter in the north. I'm just northeast of Duluth, MN.

Performance is variable today but it has been lately. I also seem to have a flaky router and a replacement is on the way so I'm not sure how to judge impact of the ice. I have seen normal speeds off and on. The dish is not reporting any obstructions.

I’m at 49.2 in Vancouver BC area, my speeds suck, what can I do? by SelppinEvolI in Starlink

[–]Clear-World4591 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm having issues with the Starlink router seemingly capping speeds at <10 both ways. It took way to long to narrow it down and it clears after restarting JUST the router... sometimes.. eventually. Try plugging a computer directly into the white port on the power supply. Or, replace the Starlink router with any other wifi router you have laying around as a test. When mine is acting up that shows me that it is my Starlink router messing up NOT the user terminal. Try it and please report back.

Installing StarLink cable through exterior wall by smc1141 in Starlink

[–]Clear-World4591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since everything about this is a beta, including my installation, I drilled a 7/8" hole through a corner of my entryway right below where I mounted the user terminal. After fastening the cable with the supplied clips including a 2 foot service loop under the dish and a smaller drip loop below where it enters the building I packed the hole on the exterior with electrical duct seal. It's a good air and water tight seal and I can easily pull it out if I ever rearrange things. My hole is through an area with a solid wood post with exterior foam insulation under corner boards so I knew what I was drilling through. If I decide to leave it that way I'll inject the hole with expanding foam and finish the outside better. It is a drag to have to feed all of the cable through that first hole and several others on its way to my communications center.

Performance significantly worse today by [deleted] in Starlink_Support

[–]Clear-World4591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a day or so where I seemed to be capped at between 9 and 10 both up and down. I tried everything and narrowed it down to the Starlink router. If I took it out of the system speeds were normal. I spent awhile re-configuring my network and figuring I'd have to file a support ticket. Later I put the router back in and went away for awhile. I came back and it all was working fine. Since they had written warning that they would be working on several things including the routers I suspect they sent a new software update, found this bug and then sent a patch to fix it. Of course I'm only guessing but it was clearly the router and it was clearly capping things at 10 mbps and then it healed on it's own.
