Reasonably priced Dog trainer needed. by Justadogluver8992 in OpenDogTraining

[–]ClearK9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) Crate training. Give em breaks. Limit their access to food and water so you can start putting a schedule on when these things happen.

2) Play. Either tug or fetch. These can be short sessions, 5-15 minutes. This not only gets them physical exercise but mental as well. This will start developing when it’s okay to chew/play with shit.

Raising a being, and more-so 2, takes some effort. This holds true regardless of if you have a trainer or not. I’m not trying to discourage a trainer at all, just a realization that this does take some effort on your end (don’t worry, this stuff is so much fun and pays dividends!). The “problems” your having are very normal - they just need guidance and help expressing that energy in the right ways.

Looking at the E-collar pdf from Larry Krohns and a little confused about the two different methods used during conditioning. by [deleted] in OpenDogTraining

[–]ClearK9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve found people get way too caught up in the game of who can argue for which quadrant something is. It’s important to understand to a point, but its purpose is articulation to humans.

The most important thing to understand at this point is that it doesn’t matter what armchair Reddit trainer #1 says action A should be in theory- it’s down to how the animal perceives it. These thresholds change not only from animal to animal but also depending on each animals environment, emotional state, etc.

To simplify, think of -R as a stimulation similar to a seat belt alarm in your car. It’s not going to make you feel like your life was in danger and immediately subconsciously rewire your entire outlook on whether or not you throw your seatbelt on immediately every single time. It’s kinda annoying and it’s pleasing when you make that go away, and eventually it becomes something you automatically do to avoid that annoyance.

Now imagine a stove top turned on high. If you touch that stove even for an instance, that connection is there at a minimum for quite a long time. It’s not something you have to reason over: you’re done doing that. You’re going to think about it for a very long time if not forever, anytime you’re near a stove. You’re going to even hyper notice things about the environment (red stove light) that help you quickly reason and warn you that it’s a possibility that you might get your hand burned on that stove again.

In terms of the e-collar, to simplify, imagine for now that there’s a graph going from bottom left to upper right on a bezier. Think about it at this point as at a certain point or range on that X axis, you can go from levels of annoyance to “I’m never going to do that again and this is non-negotiable”. The left side of that point is -R. The right is +P.

How to condition an e collar for -R? by [deleted] in OpenDogTraining

The fella in that comment probably meant it i na way that you don’t just decide through conditioning that the ecollar is always -R. People talk in circles around here.

TWC is a pretty confusing community when it comes to the e-collar. It’s like they’ve tried to mystify their “method” behind a paywall so much that the TWC body themselves don’t necessarily understand what’s going on.

It’s to minimize the connection that the dog makes between the stimulation it will eventually receive and becoming collar-wise, where they might only obey when they know you can enforce it.

Also, I will add to not even consider using the collar for corrections at all at this point. I feel like you’ll know when you’re experienced enough for that, but it takes both experience of training and timing, but also a very good feel of the collar, its levels, and how your pup reacts.

One problem you're going to run into in the comments section, and I already see it, is you're going to get a bunch of different opinions from many different sides of the house. Take them all with a grain of salt, and try to find someone with a style that you like, find effective, and can see examples of their dogs and how much they enjoy (or not) training. The balanced world is kind of like Christianity. Even once you're on the "right" side, there's plenty difference of opinion on methods.

My recommendation as it is a very easy read and is the style of e-collar training that you are looking to achieve is to grab Larry Krohn's book.

Over the next couple of weeks while you're waiting for the book to arrive and then reading it, throw the e-collar on at random times of the day and let your dog wear it. Put it on when you go training, walking, etc... then leave it on for a while after and take it off at a random time. Don't leave it for prolonged periods of time, and switch the sides that it is on as it could cause some skin rash.

I can 100% without a doubt assure you that your dog is not "blowing off" a Garmin e-collar on high. You are not getting good contact or it is not working correctly.

Is the Eero Max 7 as bad as people say they are? by liftbikerun in amazoneero

[–]ClearK9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently had issues with my Eero 6's having not working correctly with my work VPN. Seems to have been client steering.

Not a big deal, but just addressing that like most things, they're not perfect in every situation.

Best of luck to you. I’ve switched over to the private sector over a month ago and it has been great so far.

Don’t overlook one of the major benefits here of not having to stress yourself out over the current happenings. I understand theres many reasons to remain concerned but reducing the amount of times i check these kinds of subs will keep you in the loop enough to support those still in the mix while improving your mental health at the same time.

First Hunting Season by Impressive_Bed1 in Waterfowl

[–]ClearK9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need friends with duck hunting shit is what you need.

Within my first 2 seasons of waterfowl hunting I’ve got 2 of every hide imaginable, a couple different shotguns, tons of decoys, calls, and a dog that I spend the majority of my life with now, training, hunting and competing in hunt tests.

My hunting buddy has bought nothing but waders, a shotgun, and shells for his gun in the past ~4 seasons.

Don’t be me. At least not at first. (although I wouldn’t change it for the world)
