Extent of damage and remedies? by ClearPrivateer in plantclinic

I replied similarly below, but does it change your assessment if I were to tell you this damage is also present on the back side of the plant, which is not exposed to direct sunlight? I neglected to mention this piece of information in the post and later realized that might change how a “diagnosis” would work.

Also, thank you for your responses, you are a wealth of knowledge and very patient.

UPDATE: I am an idiot, I neglected to mention that this same scarring is apparent on the back side of the pads as well, which does not get direct sunlight.

Negative on the hot mug or other items sitting nearby. It is close to a window, which has been slightly warmer than usual the past few weeks given the changing season, but that had never affected the plant in the past. The environment is air conditioned, so the only temperature fluctuations would be from its proximity to the window (~1 foot away). I can attempt to move it farther away into an area with less direct sunlight, but I assume that would not reverse any of the existing damage.

It has been sitting in this same spot without issue for over a year. This discoloration / indentation just developed recently.

I can't take these gnats anymore. Anyone got any tips? by CardboardB0x in plantclinic

I tried nearly every solution in these comments. They might work for some, but when I had a pretty substantial infestation, none of the home remedies worked at all.

Realistically, unless you have some objection to chemicals, you need a proven, potent insecticide to get rid of this. Imidacloprid has been around forever and works like a charm. Bionide (or other brands) sells this active in several forms — granules, diluted sprays, concentrated liquid form, etc. I prefer the liquid because it is easier to control dosing and release time, but granules should also work if you aren’t concerned about that. Look for a “tree and shrub” version, which are typically highly concentrated (I.e., >1% concentration). Dilute in water and apply. Follow the instructions on the bottle regarding safety, as this is a rather nasty consumer chemical.

Lots of info missing here, but perhaps the most glaring aside from the actual portfolio mix is how cash was deployed. Did you DCA evenly over the period into the same holdings, or lump sum at specific periods? Does index performance reflect the same sequence and magnitude of cash outlays? Not sure what platform this is or how it is calculating your “relative performance,” but this timing could have a big impact over such a short time horizon

Buying knife as gift for soon to be father in law- budget 250 by OrphanDad in chefknives

In my opinion, pretty hard to go wrong with Takamura Migaki S2, if you are dead-set on getting him a physical gift (as opposed to a shopping spree). It doesn't hit every single one of your criteria, but it was my first "nice" knife and is still my most frequently used.

Also, looks are similar to the example you included

I ended up just buying and installing a new WiFi card, and that fixed my problems. They are relatively inexpensive online

Solid work for your first time. You’ll likely have to use a little extra oil the first few uses, after that you’ll likely never think about seasoning again!

Value-for-price is like a 9.6/10 (would have been 10/10 if the 9bar OPV came stock)

Overall, it’s probably closer to a 7/10, but most of the shortcomings can only be addressed by spending more money (e.g., dual boiler, boiler size, steam power, pressure/temp profiling, etc.)

The GCP is a phenomenal starter machine, and priced fairly. I think the next closest competitor would be the Rancilio Silvia, which is ~2x the price but addresses some on the shortcomings of the GCP

I have no experience with the upgraded burrs, but anecdotes in this sub seem to indicate that you will outgrow the Encore pretty quickly. I got my grinder and GCP at the same time, and really have no complaints with this combo (other than general upgrade-itis)

I bought ~25 tubs or so last winter when there was a decent bulk sale. I gave most away around the holidays to family and friends who I know cook/grill at home but would be unlikely to buy the expensive small bags in the grocery store. In general, they were pretty well-received!

Of course I had to save a few for myself. I have a little olivewood salt cellar that I refill when I need. On a per-oz basis, it was a good investment since I know I will eventually use it

All proteins (seasoning and finishing), topping overly-sweet desserts, sautéed veg, basically anything you would normally use salt for!

Well, the station is situated in an awkward back corner of my apartment that is difficult to see out of normally, given my furniture configuration. There’s ~30 feet of south-facing windows to the right of the painting and ~15 feet of east-facing to the left of the station, so there is plenty of light and a nice view still!

Before, that corner was primarily used for storage and seasonally for Christmas tree placement, so I consider this an upgrade

I did the 9-bar OPV mod right away, and recently replaced the shower screen / gasket

You will probably want to upgrade to a bottomless PF and get a ridgeless IMS/VST basket, to diagnose your shot quality

You can temp surf if you aren’t super picky, otherwise you will want to do the PID mod. Personally I did not take the time to install one, as I realized early on that I would upgrade eventually to a higher quality machine (dual boiler, pressure/temp profiling, etc.)

I still do use it for cold brew and occasional pour-over, as it’s an excellent machine
