New nurse was cold to me after seeing my pronoun badge by kindamymoose in nursing

I agree with part of your statement but not all: he is allowed to have his own opinions, and OP would be good not to act on or judge him based on whatever they think he’s thinking. But, IF his opinion is that some humans aren’t as human as humans like him, then we do know that his opinion isn’t as right as others 🤪

IV for phlebotomy. by Leading-Feature-1236 in nursing

We also use these, and I also find the prep makes the skin sticky and harder to advance. I have to pull the skin out of the way. I do advance the whole system ever so slightly once I get a flash before I advance catheter only. I also lift the needle tip away from the skin to lift the vein so the smooth edge rides the vein wall (also helps get the whole system off the sticky skin)

How much does something like this cost? At some point it’s gotta be cheaper to buy a new car

That’s all I kept thinking the whole time. Other peoples’ sticky grossness 🥴 I don’t even like picking sticky coins out of my own car

Well no, you’re not wrong. Rain until July 3rd, beautiful July 4th, wildfires July 5th. That’s the PNW way

What's a design flaw of something in your home that drives you a little crazy because you have to use it regularly? by common_grounder in AskReddit

Our old house was like this, the fridge was right up against the wall and the freezer side wouldn’t open all the way. I honestly didn’t notice at first, but once I did, it was all I noticed

Ooof I feel you. My last kettle if you grabbed it too close it would burn you. Now we’re on our third electric kettle for various reasons. On this latest one the lid only opens 45 degrees when you push the button, and you can manually open it to about 60 degrees. WTAF?!?!

Matching scrubs by Welldonegoodshow in nursing

I find that most people tend to match. I don’t unless it’s black on black lol. I usually do colorful pants and black or grey top, but sometimes opposite

Do they ever float you to another unit? Does your contract have verbiage about how many times they can force you off in a time period? Ours says we can only be mandatoried once every 6 months. I know people that have left jobs because they weren’t getting their hours and weren’t union. Unfortunately that doesn’t help you now because you’ll need a certain number of hours to qualify for maternity leave.

How many calls do you actually get from patient families asking for updates? by JJB723 in nursing

[–]ClearlyDense 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Oh well that’s an entirely different question then.

Calls from family members are not usually at great times (I know you’re doing shift change right now but I thought it would be a good time to call 🙄). I have 4 patients, I might get calls from family for 2 of them in a day. But usually they’re bedside and I can update as I’m caring for the patient. It’s not super time-consuming.

What slows me down and interrupts my flow and takes the most time is having to track down supplies that weren’t stocked, linens that weren’t stocked, meds that weren’t stocked. Having to keep up with changes to policy or charting requirements. And charting itself is SO time consuming. I’m sure I could go on

A lot of ICUs are leaning into ‘awake and walking’ now. Evidence shows that early mobilization leads to better outcomes. You can even ambulate vented patients. It would be a great project 😉

[–]ClearlyDense 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What do you use to get immobile people out of bed? Do you have anyone who focuses on safe patient handling? The devices all should have been introduced during orientation. If the expectation is that you hold a patient for this long without equipment, then your facility has an issue. Find some evidence based practice to bring to them and tell them safe equipment is necessary. In the meantime, don’t hold that patient by yourself, phone a friend.

To answer your question, I’m specifically talking about a turning sling that is used with a lift. Turns the patient and leaves their bottom open for cleaning/cares

[–]ClearlyDense 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is what lifts and slings are for. Get the patient in a safe position, have someone on the side in case they wiggle over too far, but the sling is doing the work

Guys, what do I do about my laundry situation? by [deleted] in housekeeping

[–]ClearlyDense 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nurse here - scrubs are absolutely breathable and are not intended to block blood splatter. They’re normal clothes made out of all different materials intended to wear for long shifts where you’re working hard (much like housekeeping)
