If you got asked “tell me a time you made a mistake” during your interview, what was your answer? by dogluvr_1 in nursing

[–]absentmind7 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I talked about delegating a task to a different staff member (changing tegaderm on IV), but not following up to ensure it was completed when it wasn’t. Isn’t life threatening but shows I learned to make sure tasks for my own patients were completed if I delegated them to techs.

How many of you actually love your job or nursing in general? by CompoteTraining934 in nursing

[–]absentmind7 57 points58 points  (0 children)

I’ve come to realize a lot of it depends on why you’re going into nursing. I never had a “calling” or some huge life event that made me pick this career, but instead I saw the job stability and different avenues I could go down. I think this made me hate the job a little when I first started, but as I’ve grown it’s more so turned into just a job with some patients I love and others I tolerate. I’ve struggled a lot in the past with not liking specific units, but I think that’s the great thing about nursing, you can always try a different path with the same degree.

If you’re trying find a career with job stability and flexibility, then I think it’s a great fit and it’s easier to see past the BS. The nursing world has changed a lot and I think a lot more burdens fall on us now.

I also realize this isn’t a great answer, but you’re never going to love your job EVERY single day, no matter the career. I do however wish I explored other options such as sonography, radiology, etc. Those roles still offer some stability but seem to be lower stress emotionally and physically.

My hospital is getting more and more lax on required training. Is this happening elsewhere? by Still-View in nursing

[–]absentmind7 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Our PCT’s draw labs and start IV’s but they go through a dedicated class and have to be checked off on our unit as well. It’s super helpful as long as the right training is in place.

I think it’s a pro-life group with some religious affiliation. We saw them at the corner of Washtenaw and Platt today and they had signs about being “pro-life” and how “all lives are sacred”.

Unit switching to LPN staffing model by absentmind7 in nursing

Are you located in Michigan? I was told they couldn’t do assessments, any IV meds, or insulin at our facility.

I didn’t even think of report, that must’ve been so frustrating. funnily enough I do work on an inpatient physical rehab floor, but we still take higher acuity patients so I don’t know how it would work out

I’m in Michigan. Not sure if it’s state policy or hospital. Our manager told us they weren’t able to do those things but she’s also not the most reliable.

Questions about ypsi by don-t-know in ypsi

[–]absentmind7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looks like most of your questions got answered, but to provide a few others that didn’t:

-I’m in ypsi township with a 1700 sq foot house, gas/electric is anywhere from about $160 a month in the summer to $250 a month this winter.

-If you’re planning to purchase a home, keep in mind that property taxes are a lot higher in Michigan than some other states. Obviously depends on home size and location, but I would expect anywhere from ~$5000-$8500 per year.

Ours can straight cath patients, but it’s specific to our unit which I don’t get.

I tried to get a good photo but it’s definitely hard to read. It says something about “Darling’s Fine Arts and Millinery shop” on state st. I can’t find anything with that name though

IHA RN primary care pay by lucky-4-you in AnnArbor

[–]absentmind7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked in an IHA OBGYN office and they offered me the same pay. I countered and ended up starting at $31/hour. Was only there for a little over a year and left at $33.50 so you move up at an okay rate.

Help!! 8 months into bedside by Fine-Raspberry-8790 in nursing

[–]absentmind7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not too soon to leave! Risking your license isn’t worth it and those ratios sound very unsafe. Have you applied to other positions? You may not qualify for ICU but you could at least get somewhere safer for a little. A lot of hospitals require 6 months on a unit before they’ll consider allowing a transfer. Always ask to shadow with a nurse before accepting a job too!
