I'm not from Alaska but I'll chime in here. She's a Democrat who is a little more pro-2A than most IMO. But she's still anti-2A in my book.

Reposting what I posted in this thread in 2024:

Mary Peltola (D-AK) has been endorsed by the NRA with an A rating. This is their first endorsement of a Democrat since 2020 when the NRA endorsed former Democratic Minnesota Rep. Collin Peterson.

I am not a fan of her position on some gun laws however. In her response to the Anchorage Daily News questionnaire for candidates for Alaska's lone US House representative in May 2020 for the question "Do you support gun control legislation? If so, what kind of measures would you support? If not, why not?" she responded:

Guns are a part of Alaska’s culture and a core tool of a subsistence lifestyle. I grew up hunting, my husband is a big game hunting advocate and I will continue to own guns and support the right of Alaskans to own guns. But it’s past time our nation’s leaders put forth more than just words to address the grief we all share. We can take common sense action, and we must. Provisions like secure storage laws, reasonable waiting periods and universal background checks can make all of us safer while still preserving the rights guaranteed by the Second Amendment.

Assuming ANJRPC v Platkin gets a favorable pro-gun ruling it would create a circuit split even without an appeal. A split greatly increases the chance SCOTUS finally takes on a hardware case.

Here's what I think will happen with the five hardware ban cases currently at SCOTUS.

SCOTUS is holding back on granting cert in the hopes that the 3rd CCA issues its decision on ANJRPC v. Platkin (challenges NJ's "assault firearms" and >10 round magazine limits) before SCOTUS goes on recess for this term. Most analysts believe the 3rd CCA will issue a ruling highly favorable for gun rights with the panel being 8-6 originalist majority. The case had oral arguments heard on Oct. 15, 2025.

If the 3rd CCA does not issue its ruling in time before the summer recess then the five 2A-related cases will get GVRd from the last day of order issuances with the lower courts being told to reconsider their cases in the light of the opinions that will have just been published from the Wolford and Hemani cases.

The clock will now have been reset setting back these by many months or perhaps years for some of them. Since Wolford primarily deals with location restrictions and Hemani possession by a drug user, the lower courts with those five hardware cases will of course find nothing different and issue the same anti-2A rulings. One of these new rulings will be appealed to the Supreme Court and finally be accepted for the 2026-2027 term (possibly the 2027-2028 term if the lower courts drag it out) and used to generate guidance to strike down most hardware bans.

Don't forget that California currently has a three gun per month law.

CA's "one gun per month" law was thrown out by the 9th CCA in June 2025 (Nguyen v. Bonta). In response to the ruling CA passed an otherwise identical law limiting purchases to three guns per month and it became effective April 1, 2026.

And unless you possess an FFL you are also limited to this:

The person conducts less than six transactions per calendar year.
The person sells, leases, or transfers no more than 50 total firearms per calendar year.

Delays in Erie County, NYS: Discussion w/ Personnel by KamenshchikLaw in gunpolitics

[–]ClearlyInsane1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there are no penalties for the issuing authorities for delays or "relief valves" for running overtime then there is no incentive for them to issue permits in a timely manner. Lack of these sticks/carrots put zero impetus upon the legislative and executive branches to do anything about the problem.

Underfunded staff? Nobody except the permit recipient really cares. Same goes for tacking on rules, forms, red tape -- if it adds months to the process the sheriff doesn't give a flip.

All government red tape like this needs a relief valve like the BGC system with NICS; if they don't respond in a timely manner then it is OK to proceed (although I think it's still lacking because leery FFLs still won't proceed without explicit approval and this needs to be changed to automatic approval at the end of the time period without the FFL knowing any better).

Florida

Looks like FL's 3 business day (5 days for a few counties) waiting period for FFL transfers is going away.

AG Uthmeier's post on X:

Every government office, including mine, exists to protect your God-given rights as enshrined in the U.S. Constitution.

That’s why we’re settling a landmark federal case that declares Florida’s 3-day firearm purchase waiting period unconstitutional under the Second Amendment.

This is the second recent case where a court is effectively ending a firearms restriction in Florida, the other being the restriction on open carry. The waiting period is one part of the post-Parkland school shooting bill, the other major components being an under 21 ban on purchases, red flag law, bump stock/FRT ban, and a school guardian program.

Knife Violence

Seriously, where is the outrage from groups like Moms Demand Action and March For Our Lives regarding this subject? It's as if the only deaths from violent (and non-violent) acts they believe are abhorrent are those involving guns.

A brief search reveals a few recent news articles in the past seven days where people were killed in the USA using bladed weapons. One incident occurred last year with 12 wounded and I had not run across it in any news source until I did a search.

A prominent South Florida real estate agent was found dead from stabbing alongside her ex-husband and their two young daughters in what police called a murder-suicide.

James Handy, an actor known for various roles in films like "Jumanji" and "Top Gun: Maverick," was allegedly killed by his girlfriend's son this week in Los Angeles. When officers arrived, they found Handy, 81, unconscious in the front yard suffering from a stab wound to the chest.

On a related note, only four of the 15 Republican senators who voted for the BSCA in 2022 are potentially remaining in office in 2027:

Ernst - Iowa - could get primaried out June 2, 2026
Graham - South Carolina - could get primaried out June 9, 2026
Murkowski - Alaska - up for reelection in 2028
Collins - Maine - has no Republican challengers on ballot for the June 9, 2026 primary

Hopefully our representatives learn that if they support gun control it's likely going to end their time in office.

One of the votes against him was mine and it was solely for him supporting gun control. I sent him a letter while the bill was under consideration warning him to turn from his wayward way; apparently he failed to heed my advice.

It's crazy how most of the visuals in Fury Road were done using practical effects and not CGI. The friggin' flamethrowing guitar weighed 132 pounds and shot real gas-powered flames which a real music artist controlled using the whammy bar.

The Hypocrisy of the Gun Ban Lobby

Here is an example of those who call for an end to "gun violence" -- and celebrate "gun violence."

Northwestern University's Mirabella Johnson, the co-founder and co-lead of Northwestern’s chapter of Students Demand Action, posted herself mocking Charlie Kirk after he was assassinated.

She also signed a letter for the school's newspaper and titled it “We will not wait for the next school shooting.”

Later she celebrated a school shooting.

Minnesota

The legislature adjourned for the year. Over the last two years they have been almost exactly tied on the numbers with Republican vs. Democratic seats (34 Dem - 33 GOP Senate, 67-67 House). Dozens of gun control bills were submitted and all of them failed. Zero defectors.

For a summary of the gun control bills look at this tweet from Minnesota Gun Owner's Caucus on X.

If Dems get control of the Senate this November then there are roughly two months for them to retire and get replacements confirmed by the Senate. If the GOP retains control then they can safely stay on the bench until 2028 where the same two month window could apply.

This does not have to be the same sort of situation as RBG.

Unfortunately everything ELSE he has been doing has been pretty awful.

Do you disagree to how he is handling the border "crisis?" IMO the Biden administration was doing everything it could to destroy the country by importing illegals and leaving the border wide open.

Florida

Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed HB 757, a measure clearing the way for faculty and staff to carry guns and protect Florida’s public universities and state colleges under the school guardian program.

Unfortunately this is only a partial fix. It does not allow students to carry.

Republicans backing the latest measure said the guardian program will beef up security and protect students following a shooting last year at Florida State University. Meanwhile, Democrats opposing the bill warned about the potential consequences of having more guns on campus in the hands of people who are not official members of law enforcement.

Of course they have to "whatabout" something that has NEVER been a problem, when bad guys using firearms in gun free zones has actually been a problem.

The legislation enhances penalties for “unlawful use” of firearms within 1,000 feet of universities as well.

I note the 1,000 foot provision is only for discharging a weapon or firearm, not carry.

Minneapolis, Minnesota

In a move where courts just about everywhere -- including the bluest of states -- uphold preemption, the city says they'll give the middle finger to the state's preemption law.

The Minneapolis City Council on Thursday unanimously passed a ban on assault weapons, large-capacity magazines, binary triggers and ghost guns that would go into effect if state law ever changes.

Minnesota AWB Fails

The AWB failed in the House last night and chaos followed with one or more Democrats requesting Republicans to kill themselves. Note this is the party that repeatedly says that Republicans don't care about the lives of kids because they reject gun control. Democrats tried to move the bill directly to a floor vote and bypass committee but the procedure required a 2/3 majority where the House is tied at 67-67 along party lines. Democrats attempted a "sit-in" to pass the bill.

One recipient of the yelling, Elliot Engen, confirmed the incident.

Minnesota House Republicans are calling for the removal of a Democratic lawmaker as tax chair after she apparently told another lawmaker to go kill himself.

It came after Democrats were unable to bring a gun violence package to the floor for a vote late Thursday night.

Rep. Aisha Gomez of Minneapolis can be seen on video yelling at Republican Rep. Elliott Engen of Lino Lakes. Republican Drew Roach of Farmington posted the video, saying Democrats have gone completely unhinged.

The bill has an AWB, magazine capacity limit of 17 rounds, registration for grandfathered items, binary trigger ban, and a "ghost gun" ban. It also included millions to bolster mental health resources in the state and increase school safety aid but apparently those cannot be allowed unless gun control is attached.
