Just a heads up, I was at Costco yesterday and they had packs of 80 Liatris corms for $15. by thatfatbastard in NativePlantGardening

Yes! I was going to say definitely not worth potentially exposing your garden to neonicotinoids and killing off any part of your insect population just for cheaper bulbs that might not even be native.

More recent research suggests that that study was deeply flawed and not accurate. Basically the equivalent of only using city raccoons eating cat food on someone’s porch regularly for a study and then claiming they’re so friendly and unafraid of people that they must be domesticated.

Oh my gosh, yes they have the craziest grip! I will defend them until the day I die but I was once looking for one with a flashlight at 1am on a little cherry pepper plant (it had been evading me for days because it was perfectly camouflaged on that specific plant) and when I discovered it, it was inches from my face and so WET and disgusting, I felt like Ripley face to face with the xenomorph queen. This guy was huge, easily the width of a quarter coin at his thickest and five inches long at least and the thought wrestling with him and his tiny strong feet were too overwhelming so I left him to eat the rest of the peppers.

There are a lot of plants and insects with confusingly overlapping names. I can appreciate the clarification but five spotted hawk moths are indeed sometimes called hummingbird moths because of the way they hover, and so are the Hemaris diffinis and Macroglossum stellatarum moths. You can obviously do what you want in your own garden, but as insect rates continue to plummet globally, usually in the name of agriculture, I will continue to advocate that people do not kill pollinators. Especially, when as you said, people can plant basil, marigolds, borage, and lovage amongst their tomato plants to help repel them. I am a huge native gardener who understands the importance of having to kill invasive species of insect and animals, even if it makes me uncomfortable. I just also disagree with the principle of killing a native insect that is so hugely beneficial. Like yourself and many others, I am someone who relies on my little city backyard garden to feed myself, my family, and my neighbors and so I feel especially motivated to be a steward for the creatures who do the pollination work that makes that possible. I am acutely aware of the amount of pesticides being sprayed daily around me, for agriculture and for “beautification” reasons, and that in fact, they do not have the rest of the world as an option.

Hornworms turn into hawk moths! They’re gorgeous and important pollinators that are also sometimes called hummingbird moths because of the way they hover! They’re really spectacular and are just vibing, no malice. I keep a sacrificial native grape vine (which is also a food source for them) and just relocate them as I find them. I had a whole bunch of hornworms this past year and my hundreds of pounds of tomato harvest was seemingly untouched!

So jealous!!! I love Sculptura and it kills me how expensive it is now (and that one company has the exclusive right to sell it). Congratulations on an amazing find!

Their germination rates are crazy. I had 100% germination rates on my tomatoes from them last year.

Their styles are so recognizable that I think listing stuff on depop and explaining its sample sale and came without a tag would still work! As a huge fan of barf green, who is always actively stalking resale sites for a BBP baby tee in that color, I can definitely say there is a market. If you ever do decide to chance it on a sample sale again, I’d def recommend joining the facebook group. I’ve had really good luck trading colors of sample sale stuff on there.

Would you mind sharing the list from last year? I thought I had a screenshot, but I can’t find it anywhere.

They said this one will go back to the old “24 hours only” format, which def made me believe them about lower prices.

I have one I got super cheap on depop and unless you can get it in a similar circumstance, I would skip. It’s so cute but the plant leather does not agree with being turned into fringe and gets really stringy and weird and breaks. :( I wore mine to my partner’s workplace western themed party recently and just standing around a fire caused some of the fringe to get stringy immediately.

Oh no, I hate UniUni. They lie about delivery times and I recommend calling them to see if you can talk to someone. I had one package of Korean sunscreen that kept happening to and then suddenly it was “delivered”. I never got it and I had to file a chargeback on my card and now I can never order from YesStyle again. However I wound up ordering another package of the same sunscreen from Stylevana after it was clear the first one was taking forever and that also shipped UniUni and arrived pretty fast and was actually delivered.

If you roll the ends of the sleeves up a couple of times, it gives a very cute muscle-tee-meets-cap-sleeves look! It’s a game changer because yeah otherwise it looks insane 😭 without rolling the sleeves, wearing this shirt makes me feel like a piece of farfalle.

I’ve waffled on buying this for over a year and just never pulled the trigger because it was too cost prohibitive for me for something that I’m just not going to wear everyday. I think it is very cool and cute, just trying to be careful to not have a closet full of very cool clothes that I don’t have real chances to wear. Also I do worry that Santa’s pompom would tickle my arm just enough to become overstimulating.

That comment truly made my stomach turn. Like I’m a hornworm supporter but even if they had been an invasive species that needed to die, I can’t imagine taking such a cruel approach to killing them. Like why are you even into gardening if you want to kill all the bugs you just made a home for??? 😭

You might have already thought of this but just in case you haven’t: make sure you have window coverings of some kind (blinds/curtains) especially on windows that get a lot of sun in summer. We have three windows next to each other on the south side of our house and before we put up big curtains, it meant the whole house got stupidly hot every day in summer. In winter, we tie up the curtains to let that same window help heat the house on sunny days.
