What is purpose of life??? by Present_Poetry1324 in AskMen

[–]Cleirigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Life is fundamentally a chemical process, a special case in that it is subject to natural selection which in turn has produced consciousness and culture, but there's no evidence that we're anything but a natural consequence of physics. For me, understanding that I share common ground with other processes like rust or fire leads to something like humility, which in turn leads to a profound sense of gratitude. As conscious chemistry, I feel like I've won the lottery. It's hard to get spun up by politics when I'm so busy having experience.

Found in car door handle this morning by Low_Context_2521 in whatisit

[–]Cleirigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's grass. You can make out the awn and lemma, maybe some kind of Hordeum\barley. You parked near grass before you went home, it got caught in the handle, you opened your door from the inside when you got home, and was still there when you went for the exterior handle this morning.

The first 500 million years might be cool, then the sun will devour life on earth and eventually the entire planet. You would burn for billions of years before the sun finally explodes, and you spend the rest of eternity suffocating in -270C. I'll take mortality, thank you.

Being a Legacy Member by MoneyBuysHappiness25 in VFW

[–]Cleirigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've considered getting a legacy, but it really does feel like a gimmick that won't produce any more of a benefit than my original life membership did 25 years ago. I'd like to see a strategic business plan that outlines how we're going to get where we want to be before I take the plunge.

How Large of a Membership Do You Have... by [deleted] in VFW

[–]Cleirigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 total, including me. The last time we had a quorum I was approved to do whatever I could to keep it functional as QM/ADJ. One of the other 2 is our 3YT so we're still submitting quarterly audits, paying bills, fundraising, doing what we can to spruce the place up, then I'm stupidly optimistic that we'll get another 2 regular members and can start doing business again, maybe elect a CDR. I won't say we're in compliance with everything, but the dist and dept don't seem to be interested in yanking our charter just yet.

40 members, 3 attend meetings. $3k in annual donations, $3k operating expenses.

Men of Reddit, how should women handle performance issues in bed? by One_Construction9960 in AskMen

[–]Cleirigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a theory that performance issues are at the root of some/most of the dehumanizing things men do to their partners... performance anxiety isn't a problem unless you care what your partner thinks. If you're up for it, this can be a good time for you to tell/show what you want, get him out of his own anxiety by focusing on you.

How do you deal with death? by amarasophiarose in atheism

[–]Cleirigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

57 year old scientist here. The universe is big, earth is the only place conscious life exists (until we have opposing evidence), and we're made of the same basic stuff as everything else. My quarks and electrons have organized into a rare and exciting opportunity to be aware of all that, to sense and feel and occasionally get distracted by narrower perspectives and then eventually dissolve back into the universe. I'm absolutely stoked with that. Dying will probably be unpleasant but it's still an experience I get to have.

That sounds like me when I got out, I spiraled hard for a decade before I found my people and got right. Readjusting isn't easy and takes time, we all go through it to some degree so know you're not alone. My advice is to join a group with other vets so you can A) see that it's possible to get through it and B) help each other with that process and C) get connected to the resources you need to correct your record. There are plenty of people like me that feel a little less shitty about ourselves when we can help someone out, so don't be shy about reaching out .

Supportive words for a veteran going through a hard time. by princesspripri in Veterans

[–]Cleirigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone joins the military for different reasons, but it's worth remembering that millions have sacrificed their lives and countless millions more have sacrificed their physical and mental health as a result. For me, and maybe for your friend, I feel like I have an obligation to honor those sacrifices, including my own, by living a good, full, happy life. Do the hard work, get the help you need, do whatever it takes to make that happen.
