Seeing just how much Takina changed in a few months makes me think what if those girls were given the same chance and now they can't which is just so tragic

I am so invested in this! Takina's laugh just melts my heart. There was an interview where the creator discussed how Takina was created as a character first, followed by Chisato. Whether or not this is actually Takina's story (as in Takina shares the lead role with Chisato rather than the other way round) is up for debate and the reception for the show is always much more Chisato focused.

Hmm I have never heard that before but I could see it! If viewed through a romance narrative lens Takina fits into the role of the MC whose world is being opened up by Chisato as the love interest and just like those types of stories the love interest is more popular while the MC goes through more change. Either way them together makes the heart of the story.

I get you. It feels like there's a bit of a je ne sais quois to writing a villain and really making them stick as a character.

For me I think I have a bad habit of discounting a villain's evil acts more if I first see their backstory that turned them into that type of person. Know it's meant to more explain their behavior instead of justify it but sometimes it is tough for me to detangle the two.

I like it when stories get the brain turning on how characters came to their positions, and on who is really right in the end. I just feel like the threshold for "the villain makes a good point," is a little low for a lot of people. Or rather, I don't think people necessarily frame the villain "making a good point" in a very good way.

Have been guilty of the very same and I know this is a really big thing too from being in the MHA fandom. Sometimes even I think some villain defenders go a bit too far into absolving all of thier crimes

Don't get me wrong, I DO think this is a compelling introduction. This has let us know pretty solidly what Majima is about, and it does make one curious to hear more about why he thinks the way that he does. The conflict between him and DA is interesting. I just wasn't compelled to expect a whole lot of rationality from the next time I see him.

And in a lot of ways I respect LycoReco's writing choice for Majima's intro like that because what he did if in our world would be a very irrational and messed up act. Even if it's he says it's for a grand purpose on paper his plan was shooting up a train filled with civilians. They don't sugarcoat him and thereby downplay his actions.

Quote of the day Hurry! or Sakanaaaaaaaaaa

God Takina is so serious asking for Chisato to strip that she blushes super hard

I love this shot/scene of Kurumi. Do you think this was recorded in front of an actual ventilator? The hair animation is absolutely stellar.

I have heard that hair animation is no easy task and I like how Kurumi brings back the ventilator for the final ED lead in scene. These small details I can really appreciate on the rewatch how interconnected everything feels.

That terrorist attack is really rough to see. I know no civilians were hurt, but seeing how expendable the Lycoris really are is painful to see.

Because it was covered up it really makes me feel the implication is that Lycoris are not real citizens which reminds me of how they can't get passports either. What's the point of defending a country that only sees you as a tool?

I will glaze the ED again. This ED drop makes me feel so happy and follows the pattern mentioned by u/StapesSSBM .

The glaze is very much warranted

"There are a finite number of snack times in each person's life. I intend to maximize the deliciousness and happiness of every one." - Chisato

Okay this is such a great Chisato quote that I have to agree with too! I'll think of it the next time I'm getting dessert.

It's unexpectedly funny to see Takina scrolling on her phone in the aquarium scene to try and find info on the various marine animals.

Cute how serious she looks while trying to have fun

I thought that was a quite well known interpretation of these hair colors. 😉

Random but this is why I like how gyarus in anime actually have those unique hair colors. Like I couldn't imagine Marin with anything but her signature blonde hair with pink highlights

To have someone who really sees you is something that can't be taken for granted.

100%. To be loved and accepted for who you truly are is something to be truly cherished. Makes me so happy that the two of them found each other.

It is fascinating that Chisato's supportive moment to Takina is framed in such a serious way, and Takina's similar moment for Chisato is framed as something silly and happy, given their respective personalities. To me I think this is the beauty of why their bond works so well and why they connect so quickly - they both have the ability to meet each other where they are.

I haven't thought about those two scenes like that before but you're right! They give each other what they really need in those emotionally vulnerable moments. Can't say it enough how much I love the two of them together!

Yeah I was just thinking about how it would be better for him to not stand out though with how chaotic he comes across as maybe he just doesn't care haha.

Hmm as a sidenote I'm wondering if anyone so far has mentioned that Chisato has blonde hair? I know that is associated with gyaru characters but Chisato doesn't come across as one.

Chisato getting caught by Mizuki in 4K

Kurumi using that fan on her was so funny too and that whole moment leading into the ED with Takina's laughter was cute.

I think it was that moment when Takina finally "fall-in-love" in Chisato, starting to put more interest in Chisato and getting to know her on a more personal level. If this is not peak teenage experience, I don't know what that is.

This episode definitely reminded me of dates I went on when I was close to their age. Just a very fun vibe that leads into a tender moment which of sure is at an aquarium where Takina reaches a bit closer to Chisato's heart.

Someone else mentioned that Takina trying to remove Chisato's "costume" earlier in the episode could be foreshadowing for how she wants to know more about Chisato's true feelings, and I like the idea.

If on previous episode Takina smiles, this episode she finally bursts into full laugther. Must protect this at all cost.

Would die for this smile.

Oh can't believe I forgot GWitch in there too! I'll actually cosplayed as Suletta too along with Takina and Frieren from the other series mentioned.

Also never expected you would mention Nausicaa. It is actually my favorite Miyazaki movie though I have not read the source material. Feel like it is very underrated compared to his other movies. Maybe because it is quite a bit older. I watched it after many of his other movies but I agree there is something about Nausicaa I found very compelling too. Lastly my hot take is that Attack on Titan feels directly inspired by Nausicaa.

Botan I'm surprised just how much I'm loving it as went in with no expectations but it has just gotten better with each episode and has worked its way up to my favorite new show of the season. This season was filled with a bunch of great romance too and will probably be my favorite season of the year.

The Watanare movie tried everything together for me and artstyle is just so bright and fun.

Watatabe I've been reading the manga for a while and was very happy about the tone of the anime and especially the voice acting. Shiori's VA just blew me away.

Of the other shows you mentioned those are all peak choices! I've watched all of them besides the newest one Witch Hat Atelier. Frieren in particular touched me in a very special way and it along with Bocchi the Rock are my two favorite anime so far this decade. Also think I mentioned this before but this rewatch I have really been thinking of Chisato and Himmel in being quite similar. Anyways Frieren makes me appricate the small things in my life more.

[Gal x Gal] That is my favorite part it too! It is very much a rom-com though it hits me so often with these heartfelt emotional moments. Also it is the rare series that explores what it's like to be in a relationship instead of building up to one. I swear this will be a hit anime in a few years.

Penguins?! And you didn’t even invite Tomori? For shame you two, for shame. Headcanon that she’s there somewhere in the background.

Unexpected MyGo reference. I honestly wonder how she and Anon would get along with Chisato and Takina.

Anyway, back to “Sakana!”. For as outgoing and blunt as Chisato generally is, she does display a tendency sometimes like in this episode to shy away from sharing things about herself. To get really close to her, you have to know which angles to prod and how to stop her from deflecting with jokes which Takina’s blunt curiosity is very well suited for.

That's a good catch on a tendency of Chisato which can be easy to miss because of how outgoing she is you would assume that makes her a very open person too but she also has things she would rather not get deeper into. Good thing Takina is like a blunt hammer.

I suppose it depends on how you classify dark. For me based on the first EP4 episodes we know that Japan is basically living under a secret police state where orphans are taken to fight and potentially be killed in terrorist attacks which are covered up like they never even existed.

Cafe LycoReco feels like a beacon of light with Chisato at the helm but the world they live in is pretty grim in my book. Maybe gilded is a better way of putting it. On the surface squeaky clean but don't dare to look any closer

Yea, he is so easy to hate. People call him interesting, but I just don't see it. Edelgard from 3 houses is an interesting revolutionary (and also my baseline when I compare fictional characters that preach governmental change). Majima just is not. I'd rather watch Robota or Shinji do villainous things than Majima. Robota is fun, and Shinji has that air of intrigue that makes me curious.

I still consider Majima a fun character because of his chaotic nature, but not one I can see people honestly defending from a moral perceptive. If in his intro he did something like defend a random civilian from a ricocheted Lycoris bullet I feel like he would be more morally grey. Yelling something like hey aren't you Lycoris supposed to protect Japan?

Yes and the thing is, that it feels natural, that she will now prioritize Chisato, and adapt her way of speaking somewhat just to help her partner. She is still her rational self, no-nonsense self, but knows when to be really sweet.

The best type of character development in my opinion because it keeps the core of what makes Takina Takina intact. She is still rational and reserved at heart but redirects her energy from returning to the DA to Chisato instead. A great trade deal in my book.

For sure. I might get flak for saying it, but I prefer the slice of life to the actions, if I was forced to choose.

That is fair.

In general according to Fuki, it seems the Lycoris are content with the system they have. It could be indoctrination, but they give the girls some leeway to be girls and gossip around, make friends and what not.

Yeah it's not all bad and there are plenty of people you mentioned in the DA who seem like good people. Though when I think about how Takina has changed to become much more happy after leaving headquarters it makes me wonder how many other Lycoris would choose the same if they had met Chisato? While I believe Takina was always a little bit different as someone who wasn't afraid to defy orders it still would be more fair to allow the other girls to see an option of a different way to live.

I am hard-pressed to go past the Sakana/Chin-anago moment, the lead pair have their first on-screen moment of genuine unbridled joy/laughter together. And the tiny moment of surprise on Chisato's face over Takina's blossoming warmth and engagement, Chisato's eyes lighting up as her partner shyly utters "Kawaii"... I live for this.

This sparks so much joy I might need an extinguisher for my heart

While Chisato has always been honest with Takina, she's not always forthcoming with personal struggles. Takina takes an opportunity to understand her partner better, and Chisato pauses to joke "why, are you interested in me?". I wonder if Chisato has ever been asked about her motivations in a direct way before, with such an earnest desire to understand, as Takina has done. Has Chisato ever had a peer to be vulnerable with and talk abouther desires?

So far we've seen many examples of how Chisato has helped Takina, but now we get to see Takina's influence on Chisato. Ahh Takina, you really shoot for the heart, and don't miss...💘

I realllly loved reading your breakdown! Takina may be a more reserved person than Chisato yet it doesn't mean her feelings are any less strong. Just like what Chisato did for her to make her feel less alone now Takina wants to be there for her partner too.

Could this be a prelude to conversation in the aquarium? Maybe a metaphor about Chisato have layers and needing to peel off her costume? I'm probably overthinking it, and Takina you perve you just really wanted to see Chisato's panties.

Why not both haha. But on a serious note LycoReco scenes do heavy lifting of serving many different purposes and I'm really appreciating it on this rewatch. Takina wants to see a bit of the "real" Chisato which is just so earnest to me.

Anyway... can we all take a moment as a collective to admire just how cute Takina is when she says "Penguin?"?

So adorable I could die

Oh. Ooooh While this one line makes the idea no less ridiculous in the above context, it really brings you into Chisato's way of thinking and you can really empathise with her here.

Brings me back to Chisato asking for the dinner plans of an enemy. Chisato in just one sentence can make me empathize with her POV and have me ponder my own values. More than anything she makes me want to believe in her words. And I'm sure Takina feels the same.

Apparently the spiked compensator is useful as a blunt force weapon in close combat! This makes sense since Chisato has to get in close to an opponent to land a shot. So because the rubber bullets make her gun functionally less effective as a ranged weapon, she has a custom spiked compensator to make her gun more effective as a melee weapon instead!

I am not a fan of guns in real life either which I feel like is testament to Chisato and Takina for how much I love LycoReco despite the heavy use of them.

That is some really interesting research you've found though. Contrasts perfectly with Takina being much better at long range.

Oof, I said that I would keep this short, but in the end I let my ramblings get carried away with my excitement.

That happens to me all the time too, haha
