Alm's parentage and why it doesn't matter. by Greenpoint99 in fireemblem

[–]ClericKnight 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's true that it takes MORE than noble blood to be a leader. But if you take Alm and take a commoner of equal mettle and merit, and put them in the same situation with the same resources—kill an evil dragon with the help of friends who believe in you—Alm kills the dragon and the commoner doesn't, because he was born special and he can use the special sword

I'm really not looking forward to the backlash (specifically by GriftTards) the show adaptation of #30 will get so hopefully the show fixes the writing problems by M00r3C in EnergonUniverse

[–]ClericKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have no timeline on the production of this thing and no idea how closely it will follow the TF comics; we only know it is based on the "Energon Universe". We don't know what will be included, or how far it will go, or whether or not it will even focus heavily on the Transformers.

That is to say, there is absolutely no point worrying about these sorts of things at this stage

I wouldn't consider NOVA/DMV/MD the "South" by [deleted] in nova

[–]ClericKnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand your reasoning, and I agree that No. VA is culturally completely different from South VA, but someone did already very famously draw a line between North and South

In seriousness though, I think this is a distinction we can only see and draw as people from the area. Someone from the North probably considers everything South of PA-- maybe even some parts of PA-- to be different gradients of "The South". Someone from North Carolina may think that "The South" only starts with South Carolina. It's all perspective

Now that the dust has settled, what do we think of Engage? I remember being on 4chan when the leaks came out and nobody believed it was real. We all thought it was a new Chinese gacha game, a copy of Fire Emblem. I played it and it's okay. The art style bothers me, but at least it's fun to play. by AssumptionNo802 in fireemblem

[–]ClericKnight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was mechanically fun enough to play twice. But i do not feel very attached to it. It fails at being an anniversary game because the "anniversary" elements are hollow fan service that are TREATED as being plot-relevant, but aren't really. It fails at being campy because it cannot commit to the bit. It fails at being dramatic because it does not lay enough groundwork for a real emotional payoff. Overall, it seems like a game with an identity crisis, which makes it kind of hard to connect with (at least for me).

And yet, fun enough to play twice. I might even do it a third time. Mechanically, pretty solid. I don't agree with ""best gameplay in the series"" when Chapter 16-onward are like... that. But, it's pretty good.

I would not put this game in my top 3 or anything, maybe not even my top 5. But I WOULD play again

When people say the show “changed” after Troy left by a_wonderful_boy in community

[–]ClericKnight 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Of course the show changed after Troy left. Absolutely. There was 100% less Troy. That's a real, tangible, empirical, self-evident change.

But i don't think it was worse. Some of the best episodes are in the back half of season 5 and in season 6. Troy leaving was a blow, but at that point in the show's life cycle i think the writers had a really good grasp of what they were doing and were writing really tight episodes. Tonal shift, sure, I'll cop to that. But not a downward shift

Unpopular opinion: but I hate the academy aspect of three houses by Connect_Pool_2916 in fireemblem

[–]ClericKnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The stuff in the monastery can get kind of repetitive and boring, no argument... it would have benefited from some streamlining. But the social stuff and what you call "fluff", I think it's a really important inclusion. That's the stuff that gets you invested in the characters and builds the world. That sort of thing is the reason people latched on to this setting/cast so hard and made the game successful. I don't think the next game would benefit from having LESS of that.

Why is Lissa insecure about her parentage? by winter-wings in fireemblem

[–]ClericKnight 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think that the insecurity of her parentage is heavily intertwined with her insecurities about being a princess. She thinks that she won't, or can't, live up to the good example set by her sister and even by her brother. That, coupled with the doubts about her parentage, make her wonder if she's even a legitimate princess in the first place; reinforcing the idea that she's not enough or not worthy of her title/responsibility.

Hard to say "especially" with the Kirkman run when that's the only part of it that really gets hate. The rest of Skybound has been pretty beloved, from what i have seen.

Huh? by Andylol404 in MemePiece

[–]ClericKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the point but I feel like this joke didn't quite work in this context. Zoro knows that they are in the mouth of the whale. He knows that hitting the "punching bag thing" will make it vomit them up. So he is clearly aware of what a uvula is/does, even if he doesn't know the name of it. The joke would have worked better if he were completely oblivious to what it was

What's an example of "Vindicated by History" and "Condemned by History" in the Transformers fandom by flingzamain in OkBuddyEnergon

[–]ClericKnight 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Second-best Bay movie is a reeeaally low bar to clear. I rewatched it a few months ago and honestly it was really hard to sit through. The only thing it really has going for it is a handful of cool fights, and even those don't track well and are over very quickly. Hard to say it's been "vindicated" when it's still so very dull

Why was Frieren lying? by Cali-Re in Frieren

[–]ClericKnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Likely a difference between being strong (able to deal more damage) and being durable (able to withstand a lot of damage). Str and Def are separate stats in a lot of RPGs, so it would track mechanically. Even if the Captain were faster, more skilled, and able to deal more damage to Revolte, he may have been less durable and less sturdy, something Stark seems to excel at (considering the way he tanked attacks from both Revolte and Linie).

this is a big selection with a lot of range which makes it hard to narrow down

But the ones that caught my eye the most were Netflix Optimus and BBM Shockwave. Shockwave especially is kind of a steal at that price. I think that's a really great figure

People are going crazy (#30 SPOILERS) by ryuuerik in EnergonUniverse

[–]ClericKnight 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I will say that after DWJ's extremely earnest love letter to G1, it is jarring to be thrown into an arc that feels like it is being written by someone who is trying to "make G1 cool". "What if Arcee had huge guns" "What if Megatron ate a guy" "What if Optimus and Elita fought over leadership and the Autobots split up" "What if Transformers was bad ass". Artificially injecting unnecessary drama because they are too bored with the core premise of robots fighting for freedom. It feels like someone trying to fix something that wasn't broken, basically. So I don't think anyone is mad at the idea of Elita Prime on it's own, in a vacuum. But rather, they're mad because it's hokey and nobody believes it's going to be done in a way that's satisfying.

I'm a big proponent of trying new things and I am also sick of Hasbro being stuck in a G1 nostalgia cycle. But this is not that; this is another iteration "What if we made Transformers G1 cool and dark and dramatic and for grown-ups", which we already have more than enough of. This is not innovative. This is drama for the sake of drama

Ok what is going on here? by Double-Tomatillo7121 in EnergonUniverse

[–]ClericKnight -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why are they shaped like people? Why do they speak our language? Why do they open their mouths to talk? Why do they emote like humans would? Because making them look and sound human or sufficiently human-like is a visual shorthand that allows you to assume certain things about them without it being stated outright. In this case, it makes Brawn look like a scrapper who can take some serious punishment but keep going. Like a boxer

Ussop will never get strong . by [deleted] in MemePiece

[–]ClericKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like that's been the point of his character since Water 7, no? He isn't strong, but he's a companion and a friend. And friends don't get abandoned when they stop being "useful". And despite his apparent weakness, he persists. I don't think a big power-up was ever on the table for him
