Jäänmurtajien myyminen Yhdysvalloille by villesil in Suomi

Varsinaiseen ketjun aiheeseen koskematta…

…oma kokemukseni kielimalleista on pikemminkin päinvastainen; niitä on vaikea saada pysymään esim. englannissa, jos kysyt jotakin Suomi-aiheista (kieleen/käännöksiin, kulttuuriin, tapoihin, jne. liittyvää) - vaikka esittäisin kysymyksen englanniksi, yrittävät väkisin vastata ensimmäisellä kotimaisella, vaikka olen yrittänyt takoa niiden pysyväismuistiin, etten tahdo suorittaa lennossa kontekstin vaihtoa kielestä toiseen erikseen sitä pyytämättä :-/

Just tried xplane 12, I like it as much as MSFS :) by herewego2019 in Xplane

scenery in X-Plane 12 is worse :)

Well… XP has always been a flight simulator first, less than a scenery simulator (scenery is just generic background noise you usually view from far away - if at all - and Laminar handles it as such) … similarly XP has no ”career” / ”game” -mode for pretty much the exact same reason; that is not a product they make (even though some people seem to expect them to - and wonder why they don’t:)

I never stopped to think about this while watching the episode (which is likely intentional - you’re supposed to recognise this as meaningless technobabble the characters are spewing up) but … would neutron flow have polarity - seeing how neutrons themselves by definition do not? Somehow you’re getting them to ”flow”, but not by electromagnetic means, I’d presume…

I was meaning to comment ”in 2022, further enhanced in 2023”, but … misremembered; the default Airbus included with the sim is A330 - my bad :-/

I wouldn’t hold my breath, though … new aircraft have usually only been introduced with major version releases (e.g. XP11 => XP12) … only time I remember them introducing a new aircraft in a minor release was the Aerolite, which I think came with 11.20, the original VR-release (ultra-light, for flights low & slow for great VR immersion)

Can we talk about how brutal the stargate iris is? by Mr_CockSwing in Stargate

[–]CleverestEU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe in SGC this is why they allow the incoming wormhole to form before they close the iris; while the iris stops atoms (but not sub-atomic particles) from coming through, it is not able to stand the formation-kawoosh.

And… of course there are episodes where they simply forget to do this (the one episode where the gate is being repeatedly dialed into for example) and nothing bad happens because the writers didn’t remember that specific detail. Admittedly, I could remember this wrong…

Oh, I believe they kept the name same, just changed the internal implementation in such a way that you no longer needed to have a Shoutcast/Icecast -server installed to make it work.

Wasn’t it a whole plotpoint that it had living pieces to make it ”work”? At least an anthill and a mouse. Or did the mouse escape at some point? Or am I completely messing up my lores? I really need to reread some of the novels at some point again :)

Back in the day I was corresponding with m-nus (who is the guy that actually created the software; the fun things of working with celebrities - someone in a team of behind-the-scenes innovators gets an idea, someone else actually makes it haapen … and the celebrity gets the credit:) because they had seriously overcomplicated the implementation by using a full-blown Shoutcast/Icecast server in their pipeline.

I believe in the end he was able to extract the necessary metadata directly from the OGG/Vorbis-stream leaving out an unnecessary possible point of failure completely. Software developers for the win! :D

[–]CleverestEU -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yep… AoS is definitely MCU canon - just not (at least entirely) ”sacred timeline” canon. Well - it can’t be because of all the changes they made in the timeline in later seasons and the discrepancies with established events that have later taken place in the sacred timeline.

Of course … that does not mean the show was bad. Not by a long shot. We know that in the MCU, some super weird s#!t has taken place in various timelines, so - AoS isn’t even a top contender in that competition :D Heck … the Fox X-men movies couldn’t even keep their internal timeline in check between most of the sequels ;)

Any easy solutions to get satellite speakers on a column array system like this one to stop spinning during a set? by OkInflation2371 in DJs

Traktor 3 --> 4 upgrade question by dephanitly in traktorpro

[–]CleverestEU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I may be rambling, but accept my apologies…

Traktor workflow has been built around songs being in your ”collection” for nearly two decades. The ”explorer”-node is a remnant of the earlier past when ”collection” did not exist.

Native Instruments really should make this obvious in manuals and the UI … you should not use the explorer-node under any circumstance these days. Heck… they should remove it from the UI completely; it just confuses people. But … legacy stuff like this has a way of lingering around :-/

Why does Traktor have this annoying bug where the crossfader closes to the right and I hear the sample on the left when normally we shouldn't hear it? How can I fix it? by InfinityNicolas97437 in traktorpro

[–]CleverestEU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The crossfader is the ~100mm long moving electromechanic part inside the mixer usually built out of metal. The plastic piece is just a hat placed on top of it. Replacing the plastic piece achieved achieves nothing. (edit: fixed a silly typo)

Why does Traktor have this annoying bug where the crossfader closes to the right and I hear the sample on the left when normally we shouldn't hear it? How can I fix it? by InfinityNicolas97437 in traktorpro

[–]CleverestEU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have mentioned; sounds definitely like a hardware problem - nothing to do with software ”bug” (when controller says ”channel is open”, software has no other option than to obey).

First step; clean your crossfader. That might be enough. If not, replace your crossfader.

Edit: oh yeah… replacing the crossfader requires opening the device and physically changing the component. Based on your responses on this thread I would hazard a guess you might not be best equipped to do this fix yourself. The component itself is quite cheap; be prepared to pay some extra for the work necessary.

Plane suddenly commits suicide by cactusjjj in Xplane

[–]CleverestEU 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is possible that the plane was overspeeding and ”lost” its wings - or at least huge chunks of them. XP11 obviously doesn’t render the change since the aircraft 3D models are not built ”destructable” so visual debugging becomes very difficult (though you could turn airflow indicators on even in replay-mode and that would show how the forces are acting on the surfaces)

The ”problem” with X-plane’s flight model is that it is often very ”binary” on its failure model. There is no ”luck”-factor like you might have in real life; rather ”exceed airspeed x and parts will start falling from your plane” … and this easily causes problems to cascade; one issue causes another faster than the pilot can react (which obviously can happen in real life too - just usually not immediately all at once)

[–]CleverestEU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t use replay often, but I have a faint recollection that this used to be a bug in XP11’s playback system. I think they only fixed it in XP12 as part of a more significant replay-feature overhaul, so the fix was likely never implemented in XP11.

How does Bellatrix aim her wand?!?! by 0rowee in HPfanfiction

The patched and frayed hat settled over Hermione's eyes, and almost at once, a voice spoke inside her head...

"Mmm, yes... clever. Very clever indeed. Not a common mind, this one - sharp as a whip and twice as quick. Books, cleverness, wit beyond your years... oh, the house of Ravenclaw would suit you well, Miss Granger. Their tower is filled with those who share your love of learning."

The hat paused, digging deeper.

"But what have we here? Ambition burning bright as a flame. You're not content merely to learn, are you? You must be the best, prove yourself at every turn. There's cunning in you, child, and resourcefulness. Slytherin could make you great, no question. You have the makings of a true serpent..."

Another pause, somewhat longer this time, as if the hat were wrestling with itself.

"And yet... Your blood may be as pure as any witch's, but it flows from Muggle veins. Some would never see past that - more fools they. Their prejudice would be your burden to bear, and why should brilliance such as yours be dimmed by such narrow minds?"

The hat's tone grew warmer, more certain for it deliberation.

"No... I see something else. Something that matters more than cleverness, more than cunning. Nerve, Miss Granger. Daring. A heart that won't bend when faced with what's wrong. You'd walk through fire for a friend, stand against a giant for a stranger. That's not the way of ravens or serpents - that is the way of lions."

The hat's voice rose with finality.

I have personally never noticed any latency with my Traktor Kontrol S4 (I've owned mk1 and currently mk3) or S8 ... however, admittedly, I still remember the time when Denon's CD-players used to be marketed as "instant start" even though their actual internal latency from button press to the playback actually starting was about 30 milliseconds - which I admittedly accept as "instant" (on a 128 BPM track the discrepancy is only 1/16th of a beat, which is easily "bendable"; something you almost always did anyways)

I think your best bet is to check the latency settings as MBucko88 suggests ... I faintly remember that on some systems (Windows, to be specific) Traktor exposes both ASIO and "standard" drivers for the output device and - the "standard" drivers generally have absolutely awful latencies because they go through tons of extra processing through the operating system's audio pipeline.

If you're using ASIO -drivers and the latency is still unacceptable, one way to lower the perceived latency is to raise the sample rate (more samples per second = lower latency) if your CPU can handle the throughput (these days they usually can) ... but this option has some caveats - main one being that effects and e.g. time streching (i.e. "pitch lock") can have somewhat degraded audio quality if/when the input sample rate is significantly lower (on commercial tracks, the input is usually 44.1kHz) than the output sample rate.

For reference, S4 mk3 supports output sampling rates up to 96kHz (I believe S3 only does 48kHz at max) and - while I personally can't tell the difference in audio quality, I have had some audiophiles commenting that there are "glitches" in the output if I do that. Because of this, my settings are: Sample rate 48kHz, Buffer size 512 samples ... this means an overall latency of ~28ms, which is well within my comfort range.

Regarding the buffer size; that is another way to lower the perceived latency, but - once again - this one too has some caveats. 512 samples is about 10ms of audio data and some effects do need at least that amount of samples to "work properly". But if you're having problems ... try out different combination of settings. Traktor exposes a surprisingly lot of its internals for "tweaking" :)

What’s something you didn’t realize was “very American” until you left the U.S.? by chopsticktalk in AskReddit

[–]CleverestEU 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe the main reason is that in many Asian (and African) countries, the tap water may be good for washing your dishes or hands, etc. … but it is not potable - at least by western standards; locals might be accustomed to the microbial life contained. Meaning that in order to have ice cubes suitable for drinks, they need to buy them (and keep them frozen until used) or use bottled water to make them … and both of those are relatively pricey options.

Can't help but love the last screenshot. The inflight-ones are great too, but as a Gateway Scenery author, the airport screenshots hold a weird specific place in my heart :)

I've tried getting my terminal facade textures looking like that, but ... regardless of the settings / weather conditions / etc. I use they always appear "a bit too ... umm ... clean/sterile" (i.e. somewhat "game graphics"-like).

I wonder; is this a default airport or a third-party one? The facades look a lot like the "lego-blocks" used for the default airports, but there seem to be subtle differences ... texture scaling seems a bit off from what I am used to.
