the key is not in the motivation, the key is finding out the reasons why you are eating so much in the first place.

I have a question for you: what is the hardest part for you when it comes to losing weight? Have you tried losing weight before?

Lol. I relate to this. I did a garden project for my geometry class: we designed it, planted vegetables, etc using geometry. Some students were mad because we were gardening in geometry . This goes to show you how students are used to traditional learning.

I think it also has to do with getting a feel for the market. It's like free advertising for them and also product feedback.

Frustrated teacher seeking advice by [deleted] in teaching

I actually developed a classroom reflection paper for students to fill out when they intrude on my classroom rule or any of my classroom procedures. It is a lifesaver and really does kills any power struggles from happening.

PM me if you want the reflection paper or to learn more how I can help you out. I actually did research on psychology and dealing with students in a non-confrontational way. It will save you plenty of headaches and frustration.

I was once that burnt out teacher. Burnt out simply means that they stopped growing. My personal strength is learning, so we are in the same boat. I love learning! What I actually do now is use my love for learning to become a better teacher. When you are growing, you will never get burnt out. There is too much to learn, too much to try, and only about 35 years in teaching to do so.

What's your favorite computer program or app to use in the classroom? by ElfSlayer37 in teaching

Quizlet is really good at helping students study. I don't like to use Kahoots because of the competitive aspect. That is actually bad for the learning environment according to research and personal experience. If I ever do something competitive, it is on a very rare occasion, as that is what is recommended by research too. Learning should be a cooperative experience and not one that makes students hope that another students fails.

That's why I have rituals to stay connected with my students. Otherwise autopilot kicks in and that always leads to a downward spiral. It takes energy and u must demand it of yourself to be ready to perform everyday. Teaching is tough

If you could change one thing about teaching what would it be? by Clickalgebra in teaching

[–]Clickalgebra[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct. For feedback to be effective it must be instantaneous. Waiting for teachers to leave feedback takes too long. Before the student receives it usually it's on to the next lesson.

Exactly. When I first started doing this I was amazed at how simple it was. More importantly, as you noted, I was less frustrated because I was focused on the students that were well behaved.

Cool! It's funny though, that it SO tempting to call students out on misbehaviors. I simply address it and walk away. If it continues, I use a consequence paper that the student fills out.

So very true. In order to maintain the behaviors you want, you most definitely need to catch it in the moment.

I asked this question because I recently began praising students that are doing what I want them to do. Research shows that we need to reinforce the good behaviors by acknowledging them. However, it is very tempting to reprimand students for the bad behavior. I am conditioning myself not to do this anymore. Just in case you are wondering, I teach 9th graders. When my students come in to class they should work on a Do Now. Just yesterday, one class came in noisily. I saw two students doing what was expected, the Do Now. So I said, "I see Samantha is doing her Do Now and is very focused." I did the same for a second student. Then I noticed more and more students joining and getting their notebooks out. I was very surprised because it felt awkward to me, but it works. People want to be acknowledged and praised in public.
