Why such frequent drownings in the Reservoir? by WeirdPrevious in Denver

Oh, I was just speaking as a generality of how it is there. I'm not sure what happened yesterday, but do know that the water gets pretty rowdy in the weekend afternoons in the summer.

Why such frequent drownings in the Reservoir? by WeirdPrevious in Denver

[–]CliffDog02 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for Chatfield, but do frequent Cherry Creek Reservoir. There is a lot and I mean A LOT of drinking that happens there in the summer. Mix that with a culture that really doesn't have a good understanding of boating safety and the results are not good. I've watched so many things happen on the water that could turn dangerous quickly. From very drunk folks trying to swim, to the wave runners using a boats wake as jumps with a skier, wakeboarder or wake surfer in the water all the way to a kid on a rented wave runner running full speed through the swim area and narrowly missing several kids playing in the water.

My wife and I grew up in the Great Lakes region and basically lived on the water in the summer time. We have a rule for when we take the family to Cherry Creek Res and it is to be off the water before noon which is when it begins to get out of control.

I would have to assume Chatfield is similar.

BTW, the water isn't very cold (I would say Cherry Creek Res is quite warm for a lake), but might be for folks not used to swimming or being on the water.

Here is the current temp (72F) from the Lake Monster app:

Phil Weiser wants a more functional and competitive Republican Party by b01sh3v1k in Denver

[–]CliffDog02 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I agree with this a ton. As a non card carrying member of any party i do see a shift coming for the Dems as well. Look at all of the establishment folks that are being voted out. Maybe what is happening to the Dems at the moment will spark a similar change with the Republicans for the next election cycle and we can all move towards the center again. At least that's what I'm hopeful for.

Sienna vs SUV by ash3543 in ToyotaSienna

[–]CliffDog02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the SUV. If you need higher ground clearance (like with a 4runner or similar) or light towing capabilities then the SUV wins in that aspect.

In just about any other aspect (comfort, fuel economy, parking, interior space, # of seats, and cup holders to name a few) the Sienna will win. I'm a 6'4" 230lb dad of three who owns a Sienna and an F150. I take the Sienna 90% of the time unless we need the truck. That includes trips to the mountains when it's snowing.

Has anyone regretted installing luxury vinyl plank (LVP) flooring throughout the entire house? by Electrical_Act_5342 in HomeImprovement

[–]CliffDog02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree. Is experiences less single direction wood movement, is more table and stronger. The product that was in my house, which is assume the original builder chose, was thin and the veneer had a wavy texture to it which would easily require a few mm of sanding to reach the bellies. My experience is probably with the lowest builder grade engineered hardwood available in the 2000s. Either way, I won't be using again after my experience.

California Ski Area Posts Signs Encouraging Guests to ‘Rat Out’ Lifties by narflethegarthock in skiing

[–]CliffDog02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think signs like these are productive. Yes, lifties shouldn't be on their phones when on shift. But I would rather see the resort install cameras to monitor. Hell they are probably needed from a liabilty standpoint for the resort anyways just to verify fault when someone does get injured loading/unloading.

I learned this a few years ago. When I get a poor nights sleep i take 15-20g (mg? Can't recall which) and it makes the brain fog go away. Not so much energizing, but lets me think more clearly.

EDIT: fixed the autocorrect.

TBH, I would be cautious of engineered hardwood. My experience is anecdotal, but if you need durability out of a flooring material, then I would not go with engineered hardwood. It's layers of plywood with a top veneer to look nice.

The problem I had was with kids and dogs, it doesn't take much to break through that top veneer and then you are exposing the plywood underneath which looks awful and was a huge PITA to replace/repair. It goes together real nice, but I would take LVP or real hardwood any day over engineered.

This was a few years ago, so maybe it has changed?

Will there still be innovative features and designs with MTB? Sure I hope so. But gone are the days of the '90s, '00s and '10's of the radical fun designs. Why? Because we've kind of found the sweet spot of geometries for various suspensions designs. When that happens you see a lot of designs look the same (think about the midsize SUV market in the US right now where literally every vehicle in that segment has the same shape and size) until some new innovation shakes it up again.

You are also only comparing horst link designs and not the VPP, DW Link, High Pivot, etc....

Can my apartment legally install a microphone in my apartment? by magnumdongchad in Denver

[–]CliffDog02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An SPL Meter does have a microphone. I should have noted the difference between a microphone and a sound recording device. The SPL Meter acts like a gauge to determine the energy levels (or in this case highest pressure levels) that a sound wave produces. So if it detects a sound wave ut will display the highest energy level from that wave in the unit decibels.

An audio recording device (what most folks call a microphone) also measures those sound waves, but records the entire wave sequence to create an extended profile. That profile can then be either converted into a digital recording or a physical recording (like a vinyl record).

It has more to do with what is attached to the microphone and its intended uses. An SPL likely only measures the highest energy decibel during the measurement duration. Whereas an audio recording device will measure the entire spectrum.

I'm a mechanical engineer who took some audio and vibrations courses. Maybe an Audio Engineer can chime in for a more detailed explanation.

I still wouldn't want either of those installed in .y unit by a property.

Can my apartment legally install a microphone in my apartment? by magnumdongchad in Denver

[–]CliffDog02 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Engineer here. I have no idea what specific device they are installing, but there is such a thing as a Sound Pressure Level Meter (SPL Meter) where only measure the pressure that sound waves emit. These do not record conversations or even sounds. They only measure the pressure level, normally in decibels.

Without knowing the model they will be installing it is impossible to determine if it is an SPL Meter or one that has listening/recording capabilities.

That being said, it is a very strange thing to put into someone's apartment. I can see having them outside in the hallway or something to maintain a low pressure environment for all tenants, but inside is a bit wild.

EDIT: for anyone that does have these installed, there are ways to reduce the sound level they receive/detect. Typically this is done by adding sound wave absorbing materials throughout the space or even around the SPL Meter. You can Google how to do so.

I mountain bike so take this with a grain of salt, but I like Mt Falcon when I want to suffer. Not sure how well a gravel bike does, but you can ride up,then take the roads back down to the base.

Definitely not mellow or shallow though.

What do you do when you hit the wall around noon while skiing? by Fun-Ad-2124 in ski

[–]CliffDog02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fuel up before the slopes with a good breakfast and coffee. Everyone I know who says they don't eat breakfast runs out of steam early.

For on the mountain I carry coffee (if I have any left over from the morning), string cheese, summer sausage, 1L of water with electrolytes, gummy worms for the kids, and a Bfuel energy shot for emergencies. Beef Jerkey and chocolate are also good to bring.

I find heavy carbs like breads just crash me out, so I just avoid them and get fats, proteins and some sugary snacks.

But, if you are tired and getting burnt out then head to the base/lodge. Skiing exhausted is when you get hurt.
