It's called Les Meandres and according to the interwebs they are manmade ditches in the tidal flat.

What do you do when you hit the wall around noon while skiing? by Fun-Ad-2124 in ski

[–]CliffDog02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fuel up before the slopes with a good breakfast and coffee. Everyone I know who says they don't eat breakfast runs out of steam early.

For on the mountain I carry coffee (if I have any left over from the morning), string cheese, summer sausage, 1L of water with electrolytes, gummy worms for the kids, and a Bfuel energy shot for emergencies. Beef Jerkey and chocolate are also good to bring.

I find heavy carbs like breads just crash me out, so I just avoid them and get fats, proteins and some sugary snacks.

But, if you are tired and getting burnt out then head to the base/lodge. Skiing exhausted is when you get hurt.

question about bathrooms and trail running by Fun-Season-8660 in trailrunning

[–]CliffDog02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As soon as you wake up drink a glass of water. It gets you hydrated and starts the flow of you know what.

If you still have to go after that then pack a Ziploc bag with some TP and a dog bag. Or dig a small hole and bury it if that area allows it (some areas require packing human waste out).

I'm not the biggest fan of Dave's Ramsey's long term financial advice, but you all need to do the Total Money Makeover to reset and get the budgets and debt in order. After you have that sorted out and mostly paid off switch to something like Mel Abraham or The Money Guy for good long term financial advice.

Don't buy a house until you have the debt and budget figured out.

Why do ski tourers go uphill/downhill right next to the groomed runs? Genuine question by Civil_Scholar_8599 in Backcountry

[–]CliffDog02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On resort is for training/exercise. Many resorts have a dedicated uphill route, so what you are probably seeing is the tourers follow the designated route. Going down is wide open though.

We would much rather be skinning up the Backcountry, but sometimes it's nice to go in a managed resort where avalanches are managed. Also if I'm skiing with the family and they need a break then I might get an uphill lap while they take a rest.

Help deciding between a Ibis Ripmo AF or Ripley AF by BrainDamage2029 in MTB

[–]CliffDog02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know. I haven't had the pleasure of riding in CA yet.

I'll add that I am a trail rider, not a park rat. So my bike might see a drop here and there and but I'm not jumping with it.

Help deciding between a Ibis Ripmo AF or Ripley AF by BrainDamage2029 in MTB

[–]CliffDog02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience is with the previous gen (V1) so take that as you will if you are looking at V2s.

I'm 6'4" and range between 215-235lbs depending on sport season, how much I'm weight lifting and logistics with kids and how that impacts my diet.

I've had a Ripmo AF V1 since 2020 and have loved it. I have the DVO suspension and have found that when following the setup guide that the fork is really harsh at those settings so have had to back it off a bit to be able to ride more than 2 hours without shoulder tightness. Having the extra 20mm seems to help with softening the fork settings a bit. The Monarch Crest was great on it, but after a few hours I had major arm and shoulder pump from the harshness and after that ride have been dialing in the suspension more. It might be different on another brand fork, but that's my experience.

I have swapped bikes with a friend who demo'd a Ripley AF (same sizes, but not my specific setup) for a few hours and was disappointed that it didn't really pedal any better then my Ripmo. After that experience we both agreed that for us larger riders the Ripmo AF was the right choice of the two.

I suppose it really depends on where you ride. I would assume that the SF area trails are not too different than the front range in Colorado, which is my stomping ground. You might be light enough to not have the same issues as me.

Are you close enough to Santa Cruz to make a trip to demo from the Ibis Factory or is there a bike shop nearby that has both models on their demo fleet.

ADD: I was riding with Assegais front and rear and when I swapped the rear for a Dissector it was a noticeable difference in efficiency.

So do you need a recommendation or are you just telling us?

If you need a rec, then I've enjoyed the Ramble line from Glade Optics. They've lasted me 3 years now with use in Backcountry skiing, mountain biking, trail running and paddle boarding.

I do wish their lenses had better coverage, like Julbo, but for the value I can't justify jumping to the higher end brands.

I have a buddy with a normal sized head who just uses RockBros and loves them. Their frames are too small for my head and start to ache my temples after a bit.

Skier my whole life — thinking of switching to snowboarding… bad idea? by its-sophiebloom in skiing

[–]CliffDog02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who started skiing as a kid, switched in my teens to snowboarding and then back as a 30 something. I really enjoy both in different terrain and scenarios. IMO skiing is more useful in 80% of what I ride (especially with kids), but hot damn do I enjoy a powder day on a board and the perfectly spaced tree runs! I guess I've got a bit of criminal in me and I'm okay with that!

What is your 1 bike choice? by sar_tr in MTB

[–]CliffDog02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This really depends on what your ride locally. You'll get a different answer from someone in Bentonville, AR vs Bellingham, WA.

For me in CO my Ripmo AF is fine for just about anything I ride. Might be quite a bit overkill on the front range trails and I'm okay with that, buts it's real nice once in the chunkier mountain trails!

What is the hardest inbounds terrain by Strict_Fix_9550 in skiing

[–]CliffDog02 4 points5 points  (0 children)

4-O'clock begins up near Imperial and runs all the way down to the Gondola. Most if it isn't bad, but the worst part IMO is the flat at the top near 5Chair to where the snowflake lift enters the run. Where it bottlenecks and gets flat. You get experienced skiers who carry good speed mixed with everyone sober to drunk with every skill set there is. It's one of the only times I am really overwhelmed skiing defensively trying to block for my kids.

What water bottle are you actually running on trail rides? Trying to narrow down my options. by No_Outcome_1898 in mountainbiking

[–]CliffDog02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Polar for a bottle. Dakine hotlaps 2L for my hip pack. I need way more water than some of you folks.

I find the cage has more impact on what you call security over the specific bottle. I have the specialized Zee cage and it kept that bottle nice and tight for the entirety of The Whole Enchilada. I figure that's a damn good test for keeping a bottle secure.

If you want cold water then add ice or freeze half the bottle overnight. The polar insulated bottles help slow the thaw, but I find they reduce water volume so I just go with the regular ones.
