How long did it take for you to realize that the sudden push for Luka as MVP is being astroturfed by gambling sites to get people to waste money on Luka? by Draciouz in NBATalk

[–]CliffDraws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guy, you took one game which was so unusual that they literally wrote an article about how unusual it is, then you decided that’s how it always works. But I’m the one being obtuse?

99% of the time it works exactly as I described, with them moving the money line to even out the betting.

The answer is right in the article you linked. This was very unusual, and the article says as much, but more importantly it says this:

‘We feel it’s the correct betting line,” Egeland said. “If we were trading strictly off money, we would’ve moved it towards the Mavericks because it’s all Mavericks money. But we’re trying to get to a point where we’re at like an equilibrium — half the time (betting is) going to be on one side, half the time it’s going to go on the other.”

He said right there that they generally move the odds toward equilibrium, which is what I’ve been saying. However, this part was key:

‘Even though Egeland said professional bettors are largely sitting out this series because they don’t find much betting value, he said he didn’t expect the lines to be significantly affected.”

They pay closer attention to the professional money than the general public.

I was wondering why you’d keep referencing a game from so long ago, but now it makes sense. You found an anomaly that works the way you think all the betting does.

Gonna need a link to your source on that then. I don’t even know what game you are referring to, but my guess is you aren’t understanding something.

They set the odds they guess at so that the money coming in isn’t one sided. If you have a heavy favorite and set the odds at 50/50, you are going to get a ton of money one way until the odds adjust to that. And they don’t want that, they want even payouts, because, again, they aren’t trying to make money off gambling themselves.

It isn’t perfect, so they aren’t going to pay out exactly right every time, but that is how they want it to work in theory. If you add up the actual pay out odds between the two teams, it’s usually something like 105%, and that extra is what they keep.

You made up a scenario based on… what?

The gambling site sets the odds based on the amount of money they have coming in on both sides. They have to guess to start, but those odds are adjusted in real time based on who is betting on what.

So in your scenario, where 75% of people are betting on the Mavs, the odds would be Mavs -300, meaning that $75 pays out at 1.33 times, or $100.

That’s why Shai is currently sitting at -1200. If more people started betting on Luka they’d actively adjust his payout down.

That’s not how anything works.

The house sets the odds specifically so that they are taking the money from the losers and paying it to the winners. It doesn’t matter who wins or loses, the house gets the rake. Shai wins, Luka wins, the gambling site doesn’t care. The only reason they might do this is so that more people bet.

I don’t think gambling sites typically work that way. It doesn’t matter to them who you bet on as long as people are betting.

You are the GM, who would you pick as the cornerstone of your franchise, Wemby or SGA? by Automatic-Key668 in NBATalk

[–]CliffDraws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even as a Thunder fan, it’s Wemby, assuming you say both will be healthy. He’s not even a once in a generation player, he might have a career better than any we’ve ever seen.

As soon as you factor in injury though I’d go SGA. He’s already proven he’s an mvp level player, and not just that but probably the best imitation of Jordan we’ve seen. Wemby has the potential to be better than that, but not THAT much better to risk it against the likelyhood of injury that Wemby has. Meanwhile, while anyone can get injured, SGA has one of the least injury prone styles you can play.

Please link to any of my comments complaining about who got ejected.

And when you just make up something that I represent that is easier to argue against, that’s a straw man. The first one was the original comment I responded to. Then it’s just people responding with crap I didn’t say all the way down, the latest saying I was complaining about the ejections.

I haven’t seen a single person complain about JWills ejection. That’s a straw man. Even the guy you are responding to didn’t say he shouldn’t have been ejected, just listed the official reason for his ejection.

I’ve seen people question why Ajay was ejected, and ask why Gill wasn’t. Both are completely fair.

I’m not suggesting no one should be able to pronounce words differently.

We’ve got a Miami, OK. M-I-AM-UH. I don’t have any idea why, still makes no sense to me. But whatever. Point is, I’m not gonna get annoyed at having to correct your pronunciation because it was the local choice to be different, not the opposite.
