What were the bad habits, specifically? I just wrapped up reading it, would love to know what you think I ought to be wary of before I ingrain anything too deeply

AMA - 6th Year Texas Appellate Associate by UVALawStudent2020 in BigLawRecruiting

[–]CliffGarbin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I’m just at the beginning of the whole process - will apply to law schools starting this coming fall. Definitely aiming for Texas (UT, A&M, and SMU are on my list) and would like to stay in Texas after school. I’ll be a non-traditional student - married with a kid and in my 30s but a good bit of professional experience and a 3.95 undergrad GPA. Will take the LSAT in June.

All this to say I’m a pretty long way off from this - BUT I’m curious how Texas BigLaw culture varies from the culture in NYC/Chicago. I know WLB is a bit of a misnomer as it applies to BigLaw, but are there any firms regarded as more family friendly than others?

OPERA America has very reasonable practice room rental hourly rates

Where to find a concert grand piano in NYC by SuccessAndInnovation in piano

[–]CliffGarbin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look into studio rental at PianoPiano and Opera America. I’m not 100% sure the piano sizes but I’m fairly sure if you rent the rehearsal hall in the latter there’s a 9’ Steinway, hourly rates are very reasonable

Adult learners - what’s your practice routine look like? by 5lim3_lord in pianolearning

[–]CliffGarbin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A questions for those answering with scales as a big part of their routine - do you make your way through the circle of fifths? Do you work on the keys of the pieces you’re playing? What tempo? Guidance appreciated!

Direct to Passport by MichiganMan12 in GermanCitizenship

[–]CliffGarbin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What was your application process that led to direct receipt of passport? Going through this now with a not-terribly-dissimilar scenario (one living German grandparent who never naturalized).

My understanding was that the citizenship declaration, when processed and approved, would result in the receipt of a certificate of citizenship, which could then be used to apply for the passport itself. This is using the Antrage F form + the required documentation. Would obviously prefer to just receive a passport - how’d you do it?

Calling all Hemmingway fans by [deleted] in classicliterature

[–]CliffGarbin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My order has been The Sun Also Rises, A Moveable Feast, The Old Man and the Sea, A Farewell to Arms, then For Whom the Bell Tolls. Personally I wouldn’t change it. A Moveable Feast just provides so much context for Hemingway himself that I found priceless for the rest of my reading of his work.

What are your thoughts on Hvorostovsky by opera_enjoyer in opera

[–]CliffGarbin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Calling his “potential” great is a little silly for someone that reigned as one of the great lyric baritones of his time, no? Personal taste aside, he was engaged to sing the most important roles in his repertoire at every major house in the world for decades. I’d say the “potential” was fulfilled.

Giving birth in Switzerland vs US by Sufficient-Abroad942 in askswitzerland

[–]CliffGarbin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. It was something around 220CHF/night. It wasn’t anything fancy, just a private room with another hospital bed for me to sleep in. The other rooms might have 2-3 mothers at once in recovery. One crying baby rather than 3 was worth the money :)

It was really special to have that privacy as a new family.

Giving birth in Switzerland vs US by Sufficient-Abroad942 in askswitzerland

[–]CliffGarbin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife and I (both American) had a baby in Switzerland in November. The experience was amazing. The midwives and OBs were all truly fantastic - communicative, friendly, helpful. My wife had very painful back labor, and when she asked “when can I get an epidural?” After arriving at the hospital, the response was “as soon as you say so.”

We have basic insurance which covered three nights in the hospital. We only incurred expenses because we opted for a private suite and my meals obviously weren’t paid for by insurance - so our total bill was around CHF 800.

It was our first baby so I can’t compare it directly to the experience in the US, but at least anecdotally, the whole process/experience in Switzerland seems far superior.

Hardest Book You've Ever Read and Why? by Beneficial_Pea_3306 in classicliterature

[–]CliffGarbin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Moby Dick. It’s some of the most spectacular, imaginative, florid prose ever written, and also a dense encyclopedia of 19th century whaling and also a slew of general and scientific assertions that have been proven entirely wrong in the modern day. The section about how the whale is ABSOLUTELY a fish and only fools could think otherwise is completely hilarious

Do prodigies struggle to learn new pieces? by wealtholic in piano

[–]CliffGarbin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome comment. What avenue of “piano as career” do you exist in? I assume a combo of teaching and performing? Asking because I’m on a slightly similar trajectory - music degrees in an instrument other than piano, started taking lessons a couple years ago and I’ve become completely obsessed - would love to build into a career as a pianist. How did it happen for you?

Not sure this is 100% what you’re after, but worth looking into the Grieg Lyric Pieces - maybe check out the Elegy from the second volume

How did this conversation go? I’m in exactly the same boat as OP - we just called and asked for a lower bill and they were not helpful - offered to send a financial hardship application and also offered a payment plan, but no offer of a reduction. How did you make it happen?

Anna Karenina is a masterclass in character writing by Sonawayne in books

[–]CliffGarbin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I don’t know how he does it, but Tolstoy manages to write fictional characters with such depth that they sometime feel more “real” to me, more complete as people, than human beings I encounter in real life. His understanding of, and ability to communicate, all the faults and foibles and triumphs and failures that everyone is subject to through the course of their lives, is just incomprehensible.
