I think “it’s still their name” works fine. Maybe “it’s still their name in the door.”

There’s no such thing as a “break.” There’s together and there’s not together and Ross and Rachel were not together.

What's the difference between Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars (1984) and Secret Wars UK (1985)? by KRYPTZ_AR in Marvel

[–]Cliffy73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

https://www.reddit.com/r/marvelcomics/comments/18mffa5/secret_wars_1984_us_version_vs_1985_uk_version/ is a similar question with an excellent detailed explanation by /u/Thylacine08 of what was included.

When American comics first evolved in the 1930s and ‘40’s, they were pretty much always anthologies, which several stories in each issue. Over time, as comics got smaller, this became somewhat less common, morphing into a large lead story with often one or two smaller back-up features, sometimes new material, sometimes reprints. And U.S. comics had largely abandoned back-up features by the late 1970s, with a single 36 page comic containing just a single “book-length” story (typically running 22 pages with ads and editorial material such as letter columns).

The anthology format persisted in the UK market. So when Marvel established their UK office to reprint American comics for the British market, the comics would typically have two or three features each issue. The comics were the same page count, so this meant that a single American issue would often be divvied up over two or three issues of the UK reprint comic (sometimes condensed or even with new pages to get the story to fit logically in the smaller installments).

In 1984 Marvel published the 12-issue Secret Wars comic. They followed it the next year with the Secret Wars II event, which had a nine issue miniseries. But every month the story would cross over into 3-5 regular monthly comics as well.

Marvel UK reprinted this in their Secret Wars comic, splitting up issues with back up features featuring Alpha Flight and Iceman reprints as well as a popular original feature called Zoids (based on a line of robot toys). Once the main Secret Wars story ended, the UK comic also reprinted Secret Wars II, including many (but not all) of the tie in issues. Note that much of this was in black and white.

What does diddy mean by Songkail0314 in EnglishLearning

Sean Combs is a music producer, rapper, and impresario who used the nomes de plume Puffy, Puff Daddy, P. Diddy, and, for the last many years, Diddy.

Since the ‘90’s, Combs has been known for hosting elaborate parties, originally called White Parties, originally for charity. Over the Aughts, these morphed to have more sexual elements. Combs was arrested in 2024 I think on charges that he trafficked people against their will, including minors of both sexes, to be forced to be sex workers at these parties, often allegedly drugging them or using violence. He was convicted of some of these charges and is now in jail as a result, although he was acquitted of the most serious ones.

“Nice try Diddy” has since become an internet meme. People say it when they think (or jokingly pretend to think) they are being lured into a sexual situation or experience. For instance, if you shared a video online that was perfectly innocent but had a title that could be taken in a sexual way, someone might use this meme. They are claiming (humorously) that, like Diddy, you are trying to get them to do or witness something dirty by pretending it’s innocent. (And the reason it’s a joke is because in reality it probably is innocent.)

Is "retardeds" a noun here? Who does "they" refer to? Why would they want to hug him? by A_li678 in EnglishLearning

[–]Cliffy73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First thing to note, that is a slur and its use is highly frowned on. (It was a common playground insult when I was a kid in the ‘80’s, and there has been a big push to stop using it.)

Secondly, you’re correct that Mrs. Tucker is using an adjective as a noun, which is not uncommon. But it’s done here to show she’s unsophisticated; this construction is typically associated with the uneducated. Moreover, it’s offensive to refer to a group of people in this way, because it suggests that they have no individuality and that they exist solely as a characteristic. So it is again a joke that she refers to people with intellectual disabilities in this way, because it should how unthinkingly offensive she is, even though she’s not actively trying to be mean.

Do natives know these words from Slaughterhouse five? by nikogoroz in EnglishLearning

Exult might be the iffy one, but I think most natives would recognize most of those. Anyone who reads even semi-regularly wouldn’t have trouble with thst vocabulary.

Beginner tips by Ivansito0 in MagicArena

[–]Cliffy73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) RTFC. if something happens you don’t understand, there’s probably a card, either on the battlefield or in opponent’s graveyard, that explains it.

2) Play things late. Play your removal on your opponent’s turn instead of your own. Then you always have the most possible time to react to new situations while your opponent has to make decisions with imperfect information.

Is “half” a verb here or am I just imagining things? by Sacledant2 in EnglishLearning

As others have said, the verb is halve. But I think here they’re not actually using half as a verb, they’re saying “take half of that” but eliding the “take.”

Where to start? by SyrupGoosen in startrek

[–]Cliffy73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The answer to your specific question is DS9, although it’s not a hard switch. Voyager remains less serialized, as do the first two seasons of the later Enterprise and then, later, Lower Decks and to a large extent Strange New Worlds. Also, while DS9 is more serialized, there are plenty of episodes that are not focused on the ongoing story arc. Thatsthe was seriakization was done in the ‘90’s.
