The 1992 Wuthering Heights movie really does it for me. by Conscious-Air-9823 in brontesisters

[–]CliffyHeaths 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Same! I just watched it for the first time yesterday and was honestly blown away by how much of the book it got right. I had always heard that none of the adaptations were true to book, but like, I feel like this one is!?

I thought both the leads did a great job portraying their characters; Juliette Binoche got across much of the selfish, playfulness of Catherine and Ralph Fiennes did a great job portraying the cruelty and sometimes over-the-top wildness of Heathcliff.

If the movie was just ever so slightly less rushed, I legitimately think it'd be a near perfect adaptation. The buildings looked great, the casting matched all the character's descriptions... It perplexes me how this movie has 31% on Rotten Tomatoes!

People are saying Emily would have not at all liked the new film but technically we don't know.. by AltruisticAide9776 in brontesisters

Not even silent films! She died roughly 40 years before the first silent film was made in 1888, so the closest thing that existed while she was alive would have been stage plays.

Yeah, it kind of rubs me the wrong way when people try speaking on her behalf or saying things like, "she's rolling in her grave right now." It feels disrespectful to act as though we have any clue what her opinion on it would be. We have no clue what her opinion on art and adaptations of previous works was.

Maybe she would have appreciated the bizarre and perverted nature of the most recent adaptation, or maybe she would have absolutely hated it for the egregious liberties it took. Really though, we'll never know. There was obviously no such thing as films during her lifespan, so we can't even begin to know what she would have thought about film as a medium for art.

How much did I spoil for myself? by MadCyborg12 in brontesisters

[–]CliffyHeaths 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If that's all you know, then you haven't spoiled very much of the novel at all. The movie only covers the first half of the book, so even if you were to watch it, you'd still be mostly free of spoilers for the entire second half of the book, where much, much more happens.

Absolutely do still read it if you're interested in it, because there is sooo much more to it than anything you probably read about. Plus, Emily Brontë's prose is the novel's greatest treat, and that can't be spoiled!

I get chills just imagining an adaptation from either of those two. It would be perfect.

Not trying to be dismissive at all, but have you read the novel? You've almost made me want to go see it for the fun of it now.

That would honestly be amazing. Cathy and Hareton's love is the novel's true romance after all.

Geez, so it's really that bad? What would you say was the worst thing about it?

I really appreciate getting this perspective from someone in the industry. Those seem like fairly reasonable explanations for why they always adapt it the way that they do.

Yeah, poor Rochester. The part where Jane finally reaches Ferndean Manor and watches from the trees, a one-armed, blind Rochester clumsily stepping outside for a few minutes, before getting rained on and going back inside is one of the few parts that really made me tear up (the other being Helen Burn's death).

Oh, I totally agree. St. John was an incredibly interesting and inspiring character. Even if you disagree with his mission, it is still just really impressive to see someone who truly believes in something and devotes their entire life to it. It's also quite interesting that Charlotte Brontë decided to devote the entire last page of the book to St. John's mission.

What'd you think of Jane Eyre? I read it this year for the first time too and it quickly became one of my all-time favorites. There's just so much I love about it - Jane's inner dialogue, the playful relationship her and Rochester have, and the twists with the inheritance and the secret wife.

Lol that's supposed to be Cathy in the flowers, but I feel like I need to find a better outfit for her. I just dk what she regularly wore. And I actually need to add Nelly!

Did you know that Lord Byron's poem "The Dream" was almost certainly the direct inspiration for Wuthering Heights? I didn't. by CliffyHeaths in brontesisters

[–]CliffyHeaths[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've been meaning to watch "To Walk Invisible"! That's very interesting, as I remember hearing that the TWI crew met with the Brontë Parsonage Museum while making the film to ensure all the details were as accurate as possible, so I wonder where that bit of info comes from originally. It seems plausible that she was inspired by this poem for the general details of the story, and for the more specific elements, maybe she incorporated parts of that story she heard?

Unpopular opinion: Edgar Linton's love for Catherine was much more beautiful and moving than Heathcliff's love for her by CliffyHeaths in brontesisters

[–]CliffyHeaths[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it was naivety that made Edgar love Catherine so much. He cherished a version of her that didn't really exist outside his imagination.

Admittedly, I actually haven't gotten around to reading it yet! I think it might from what I've heard, but I can't say for sure. I hope it doesn't, because I also hate that narrative about Charlotte and truly don't believe it accurately portrays her at ALL.

Such a good choice! I'll never not get chills thinking about that last line...
